Necropoli de Pantalica (Necropolis of Pantalica), Sicily, Italy 2006
The Necropolis of Pantalica in southeast Sicily, Italy, is a collection of cemeteries with rock-cut chamber tombs dating from the 7th to the 13th centuries BC. There have been thought to be over 5000 tombs, although the most recent estimate suggests a figure of just under 4000. They extend around the flanks of a large promontory located at the junction of the Anapo river with its tributary, the Calcinara, about 23 kilometres northwest of Syracuse. Together with the city of Syracuse, Pantalica was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

La necropoli rupestre di Pantalica, The Necropolis Pantalica in the province of Siracusa in Sicily, Italy and consisting of thousands of graves dug in the rock in five different places along the limestone promontory surrounded of the deep gorge where the river flows Anapo. The Necropolis of Pantalica contains over 5000 tombs.
A Pre-Greek settlement which has five chronological groups of the Bronze Age, from the 13th to 8th centuries BC. The only urban testimony that remains of Thapsos Anaktoron period is a kind of fortified palace. Not surprisingly, the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica a member since 2005 of the list of World Heritage.
La necropoli rupestre di Pantalica, The necropolis Pantalica lays for about 80 hectares and it is surrounded by canyons formed by the two rivers that run through it, perched on a plateau at the base of which we find the Valle dell’Anapo. The site is included in three naturalistic landscape sites, which are the Nature Reserve Pantalica, the Valley dell’Anapo and Torrente Cava Grande.
Pantalica became known as the city of the dead, being relegated to the background in history, until Paolo Orsi, more famous Sicilian anthropologist recovers from oblivion. They have counted more than 5,000 tombs, made as small caves dug into the walls of the rocky slopes, and reminiscent of the holes of the honeycomb.

L' avventura Pantalica – Necropoli
I filmed this Pantalica adventure on 2 September 2016 in the Valle dell' Anapo in the Siracusa province of Sicily. Most of the chamber tombs (necropoli), of which there are more than 3000, were carved into the rock between the 7th and 13th centuries bce.
In 2005 the Necropolis of Pantalica became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pantalica is located on a limestone promontory surrounded by a deep gorge formed by the Anapo and Calcinara rivers between the towns of Ferla and Sortino in south-eastern Sicily. In addition to its archaeological interest it is an important nature reserve (Riserva Naturale Orientata Pantalica), with a variety of local flora and fauna and natural caves (notably the Grotta dei Pipistrelli (Bat Cave)). Various pathways facilitate visitor access, including a disused railway track (dismantled in 1956) along the Anapo valley bottom. The promontory can be accessed directly by car from Ferla, or by walking down the old mule track from the parking place on the road from Sortino and crossing over the Calcinara stream.
