From
“Petite Mort” is a poetic, and strangely significant way of describing the ecstasy of a sexual intercourse. In French, and in some other languages, this sensation is described as “small death”.
And it maybe so, that in the moment of pleasure ( or in the moment of potentially creating a new life ) we are reminded of the fact that our lives are of a relatively short duration, and that death is never too far from us.
In my work, I have based my choreography on two slow movements from the two most famous piano concertos by Mozart. I have cut them away from the fast movements, leaving them as mutilated torsos, lying helplessly in front of the listener and beholder. They lie there, just like some ancient torso's, without arms and legs, unable to walk or embrace.
There is no doubt, that it is perverse to do such a thing. But yet we do. And I am no exception. We live in a world in which nothing is sacred. Since the time in which Mozart’s music was created, and today, many wars were fought and much blood had to flow under the “Bridge of Time”. And, it was mostly men swaying swords in show of their potency and power.
And it is always a Mort”, which accompanies our lives, sometimes it is Petite, sometimes it is Grand, but it is the most faithful companion we have, from the dawn of our existence till the end.
Jiří Kylián - Den Haag September 23, 2007

The Statement | Nederlands Dans Theater at the Kennedy Center
Known for pushing boundaries with its bold repertory and distinct virtuosity, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is prominently imprinted with an avant-garde aesthetic. Based in The Hague, this pioneering Dutch company's non-conformist, progressive productions have put its collective of astonishingly talented dancers on the international map.
As Artistic Director Paul Lightfoot says, Every season's programs include works of choreographers with a clear message… and who can strike a certain atmosphere, emotion, and essence the second the curtain opens.
The company makes its Kennedy Center debut with a program that includes two works by Lightfoot and Artistic Advisor Sol León. In Shoot the Moon performed to music by Philip Glass, revolving black-and-white walls create three separate rooms, each containing their own love story--while one of their newest works, Singulière Odyssée, is set in an art deco train station and performed to music by Max Richter, with dancers coming and going except for one who lingers, waits, and watches. The program also features The Statement by NDT Associate Choreographer Crystal Pite. In which four dancers share a heated conversation around a conference table, symbolizing corporate chaos and negotiation.

NDT
(modern dance)
NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER (NDT) is considered to be one of the most renowned and innovative modern dance companies in the world. We are proud that as part of the BENAKI SUMMER FESTIVAL we are proud to present a screening of one of their recent live performances. Especially for the big screen, 6 HD cameras recorded the exceptional NDT dancers from unique closeness and we screen their performance, in High Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound. This recent performance was recorded at the Lucent Dans Theater in The Hague, The Netherlands which is the NDT home base.
The NDT performance contains the following pieces:
Shoot the Moon
Shoot the Moon won the VSCD dance prize, 'the Swan for best dance production 2005-2006'. Lightfoot León demonstrate how powerfully and subtly a good choreography and good dance can communicate. That is what the VSCD dance jury wrote when they gave the award to Paul Lightfoot and Sol León for this choreography. In Shoot the Moon you catch glimpses of the love life of three different couples. Revolving walls with striking black-and-white wallpaper create three separate rooms, each containing its own love story. The door to the other room always seems to be open and through the window a new world beckons.
Same Difference
Same Difference (2007) is a theatrical piece in which Sol León and Paul Lightfoot let the dance speak not only figuratively, but literally as well. The dance idiom of the in-house choreographers is given an extra dimension that 'fits them like a glove' according to the Algemeen Dagblad. The piece is inspired by the chaotic influence of the ego on human beings, and how simple it is to distance yourself from it. Set on music by Philip Glass, this ballet pulls the spectator into a surrealistic world.
SH-BOOM!
The humorous SH-BOOM!, created in 1994, is a playful ballet set on Vera Lynn and Stan Freberg evergreens where men in love try to impress women. Since its première the original version of SH-BOOM! has been adapted and updated several times. The version presented in this programme has never been performed in the Netherlands. The ballet was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Production of the Year.

NDT
Shoot the Moon
Η ενότητα που κέρδισε το VSCD dance prize, 'the Swan for best dance production 2005-2006'.
Same Difference
SH-BOOM!

Over a hundred, pre-selected, young dance talents (17-21 years old) from all over the world came to The Hague to audition for a place in NDT's second company next season. They had to attend different classes and performe a solo. Five of them were eventually selected by the artistic staff.
Every year, NDT 2 opens the audition for young dance talent. Dancing for NDT 2 means working together with upcoming choreographers, the opportunity to learn to react quickly to different dance languages, techniques and working methods.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 - Subtle Dust - Berliner Festspiele 2018
13.10.2018. (english text below). Das Nederlands Dance Theater ist zu Besuch in Berlin vom 11. - 14.
Oktober 2018.
With the dancers: Fay van Baar, Amanda Mortimore, Thalia Crymble, Surimu Fukushi, Toon Lobach, Donnie Duncan jr., Kyle Clarke, Jesse Callaert.

13/10/2018. The Netherlands Dance Theater is visiting Berlin from 11th to 14th October 2018 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele.
The dancers from the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 with very young dancers are also present.
This video shows a part of the choreography Subtle Dust by Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot. For Subtle Dust (2018), her latest NDT 2 creation, León & Lightfoot have revisited the music of J. S. Bach, whose influence has had a significant impact on the career of these choreographers. In this work, as in all of our lives, the concept of change plays a crucial role, be it physically, emotionally or spiritually. Therefore, Subtle Dust sheds light on the transformation of the young and talented artists of NDT 2, in an effort to support them on their own path of development and change.

M - TRAILER - Samir Calixto/ Korzo Producties & Nederlands Dans Theater
Korzo and Nederlands Dans Theater join forces to support up-and-coming choreographers, and offer them a suitable platform to create a new performance and bring it on tour. In recent years, choreographer Samir Calixto created impressive adaptations of Winterreise (Schubert), 4 Seasons (Vivaldi) and Paradise Lost (Milton). With an uncompromising crossing of pure musicality and intense physicality, he digs deeply into the themes of his performances until they achieve a timeless quality.
For his new performance M, Samir sought inspiration in the philosophical insights of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Also Sprach Zarathustra. Nietzsche set great store by the knowledge contained in the human body: “there is more wisdom in the body that in the deepest philosophy”. In M, Samir focuses on the power of transformation that the body possesses. Accompanied by a modern arrangement of music by Mahler – who used text from Also sprach Zarathustra in his Symphony nr. 3 - five male dances present their entire humanity on stage: their physical and mental effort and dedication, their extreme force and vulnerability, and their personal fortunes and paradoxes.

Human reason can never fully grasp the nature of things. However, before we know or try to explain we already sense what’s taking root.
Accepting the fact that we don’t understand these intuitive impulses, makes way for new branches of thought and emotion to bloom.

Gerald Tibbs - Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau (2018)
NDT is very proud to present that Gerald Tibbs has been awarded ' Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau' , last night, November 15, 2018, by the deputy mayor of the city of The Hague, Saskia Bruines. The ceremony fittingly took place prior to the premiere of NDT 2's first premiere of this season, Significant Moments.
Tibbs started his dance career with NDT in 1975. As a dancer he was praised for his expression and technical virtuosity and worked with many renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek, and Jiri Kylian. After his memorable career as a dancer, Tibbs took on the artistic leadership of NDT 2 in 1990. His vision and relentless passion for nurturing, developing and guiding young talented dancers and choreographers has always been at the core of his work as leader of NDT 2. Under his guidance, the company shaped itself as one with its very own repertoire for which both young and established makers from all over the globe came to create. NDT has grown into a full-fleged company under Tibbs' loving devotion and will continue to grow as a unique phenomenon in the dance world in which young dancers between the ages of 18-23 get a chance to fully develop their artistic personalities in a three year trajectory.
For this, and for everything he has done and stands for, NDT sends his heartfelt congratulations, love, admiration and deepest thanks to Gerald!
