A short drive-thru of Needles Highway, located in Custer State Park, in the Black Hills. South Dakota. Very scenic! At about 2:00 there is the Eye of the Needle, one of the rock formations that the Needles Highway derives it's name from.. You can also hike here and there is a lake west as you are leaving.

South Dakota Highway 87 is a highway running through the Black Hills of the U.S. state of South Dakota. The road's northern terminus is U.S. Route 16 and U.S. Route 385 about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Hill City. The road's southern terminus is U.S. Route 385 about 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Pringle, South Dakota, or 14 miles (23 km) north of Hot Springs.
The highway passes through Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. The northern 14 miles (23 km) of the highway is also known as the Needles Highway. The Needles Highway, along with the US 16A concurrency, are also part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. Portions of the highway are also a section of Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop.

Needles Eye Tunnel - Needles Highway - South Dakota
This is a video from summer 2017 when we took a Ford F-350 through the Needles Eye Tunnel on the Needles Highway at Custer State Park in South Dakota. Clearance is 8 feet 4 inches wide and 12 feet high. We had approximately 3 inches of clearance on each side of the vehicle.

The Needles Highway located inside the Custer State Park in South Dakota is one of the most scenic locations in the United States. It is simply incredible. We drove it in the evening by entering on the south and then had dinner in Hill City on the north end of the drive.

Needles Highway is the most impressive road that I have driven on - so far. Located in Custer State Park, along South Dakota Highway 87, Needles Highway is part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway.
The name of the highway, built in 1922, is inspired by the granite spires that the highway winds around. Highlights include the Cathedral Spires (a Registered Natural Landmark), the Needle Eye Tunnel and the Needle Eye itself. The wildlife we saw along the way, like mountain goats and chipmunks, I put into the accompanying video Custer State Park (South Dakota) - In Another Minute (Week 251), which I published last week.
You may notice that this video shows more photographs than actual video footage. That's because I wasn't all that satisfied with the material from my old Lumix now that I have the Sony RX-100... The photos were taken with a Canon 60D.
This will be the last video from our Black Hills road trip, which Scott, Whiskey and I took in September 2014. We are already planning to go back to Custer State Park and revisit Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake. I can't wait to hike around those granite Needles!

The Needles - South Dakota Trip 2011
While we visited Sylvan Lake in the Black Hills of South Dakota during our 2011 trip we had to stop at a place called The Needles. It is a scenic highway curving through 14 miles of mountains with some breathtaking views. There are a few tunnels you drive through also but The Needles Tunnel is definately the best of the bunch. Here is my view of our stop at The Needles

After splitting from US 16A, the route is known as the Needles Highway. This segment is 14 miles long and is part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. Finished in 1922, the highway is named after the high granite needles it winds among. Access to the Needles Highway requires a Custer State Park entrance license, making that portion of SD 87 a toll road. The highway passes through two tunnels blasted through sheer granite walls—Iron Creek Tunnel at mile 25, and Needles Eye Tunnel at mile 31. Owing to the narrow roadway, sharp turns, and low tunnels, the road has very little traffic. The vehicles that do travel this road are almost exclusively sightseers.

In July 2010 my family and I took a road trip to South Dakota. We stopped in Watertown, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. We saw Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Pactola Lake, Wind Cave, Spearfish Canyon-Bridal Falls and Roughlock Falls, Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Deadwood, and Sturgis. We ended our trip with a Chuckwagon Dinner and Show at Fort Hays. There were flowers, lots of hills, rocks, animals. It was a beautiful road trip for the family. I loved the part in the cave when they turned out all the lights, and the Wildlife Loop was really fun. Especially when the buffalo were holding up traffic, and the burrows were eating from our hands. The weather was great, too. Would recommend this family trip. Great for all ages. Needle Mt. Black Hills South Dakota
The attached video references my discoveries relating to needles mountains in South Dakota, USA. My factual findings are that the in the peaks of Neddles there were referencing images of creatures created to show record as to how mankind came to be through the image of ape. I also have three other videos listed at Youtube search under Geroneification which also signifies I discovered the Holy Grail. My discoveries about needles are taken from a much earlier image of the location, however, the evidence of my finds can still be realized through the destruction of all the erosion that have taken place at the location. Custer State Park is a South Dakota State Park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills, United States. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The area originally started out as sixteen sections, but was later changed into one block of land because of the challenges of the terrain. The park began to grow rapidly in the 1920s and gained new land. During the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built miles of roads, laid out parks and campgrounds, and built three dams that set up a future of water recreation at the park. In 1964 an additional 22,900 acres (93 km2) were added to the park. The park covers an area of over 71,000 acres (287 km2) of hilly terrain and is home to many wild animals.
The park is home to a famous herd of 1500 free roaming bison. Elk, coyotes, mule deer, white tailed deer, mountain goats, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, river otters, pronghorn, cougars, and feral burros also inhabit the park. The park is famous for its scenery, its scenic drives (Needles Highway and the wildlife loop), with views of the bison herd and prairie dog towns. This park is easily accessible by road from Rapid City. Other nearby attractions are Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Badlands National Park.
Various movies have been filmed in Custer State Park, including The Last Hunt (1956), How the West Was Won (1962) and A Man Called Horse (1970).
South Dakota Highway 87 (SD 87) is a 37.894-mile-long (60.984 km) state highway in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. It travels through the Black Hills region. Just after Needles Eye Tunnel, Highway 87 serves as the northern terminus of SD 89. After this junction, SD 87 has one more tunnel, Hood Tunnel. It then provides access to the Sylvan Lake Resort. The route finally ends at US 16/385 south of Hill City.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is centered on a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the sculpture's design and oversaw the project's execution from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son Lincoln Borglum. The sculpture features the 60-foot (18 m) heads of Presidents George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). The four presidents were chosen to represent the nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation, respectively. The memorial park covers 1,278.45 acres (2.00 sq mi; 5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level.
South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. His initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from Native American groups. They settled on Mount Rushmore, which also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure. Robinson wanted it to feature American West heroes such as Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud, and Buffalo Bill Cody, but Borglum decided that the sculpture should have broader appeal and chose the four presidents.
US Senator from South Dakota Peter Norbeck sponsored the project and secured federal funding; construction began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941, and his son Lincoln took over as leader of the construction project. Each president was originally to be depicted from head to waist, but lack of funding forced construction to end on October 31, 1941.
Sometimes referred to as the Shrine of Democracy, Mount Rushmore attracts more than two million visitors annually.
