Crafted by Hand in Jaipur, India - Volume 1 Blue Pottery
A collaboration between Lost & Found and Inde Rooh.
I've been itching to show the famous Jaipur Blue Pottery from beginning to end since 2013. So on this 2017 return to Jaipur, I took the opportunity.
Inde Rooh is a hand-printed clothing brand I'm here working with on some projects. This felt like a chance to tell an artistic story rather than sell a dress so we went for it.
Huge thanks to DP Anh Tran for traveling from Vietnam to assist me on the overall project list. Thanks to master potter Romgopal Ji and his staff for letting us shoot for a day.
If you want to see more of the work we're doing for Inde Rooh - please check out inderooh.com in November when I re-launch that site.

JPIS VISIT NEERJA INTERNATIONAL
HAPPY FEET
The Stomping of the feet could be heard before the faces that they belonged to were seen. We had been waiting for this sound, wondering whether we would be able to occupy their innovative and curious minds.
On 21st November 2017, a group of 40 students from the Upper Kindergarten class of Jayshree Periwal International School in Jaipur visited the Neerja Blue Pottery office at Gopalpura and production unit in Tejaji Nagar. They were accompanied by their talented teachers and didis. They were here to discover and absorb as their school curriculum includes learning through hands-on experience.
The process of the changing of form in blue pottery was a fascinating introduction to the art form for the children. Their eyes filled with wonder looked at everything in the unit inquisitively. Asking a question with a careless abandon that only children possess. One such enquiry was, “What happens if you run out of the materials?” This came up, right after they had learned how to make jewellery with blue pottery.
We decided that instead of telling them how it is done, we’ll show them. We staged a role play with 5 of the students assuming the roles of suppliers of different parts, another one acting as the client and one of us from Neerja taking the client’s order. This little exercise demonstrated the execution of an order and the restocking of goods. The joy of understanding translated into a brilliant smile on the face of the child who had asked the question.
A magical property of blue pottery lies in its power to change color after it is fired. This fact goes unnoticed by many adults. But a room full of 5-year-olds can always be counted upon to notice the finest details of their environments. Undoubtedly, one of the students pointed out, boldly, that the color of the bowl had changed from purple to blue after it had been fired.
These wonderful children were sincerely attentive and possessed greater understanding than we could ever fathom. Their compassion could make them the mascots to our motto, “Save the crafts around the world.” Our future shines brightly in their hands. The echoes of their feet stomping in and out each space will ring in our hearts forever.

Leela Bordia - Jaipur Blue Pottery - Interview
Presented by MANAK TV
Neerja International dates back to 1978 and was founded by the enthusiastic Ms. Leela Bordia.
A lively and vibrant persona exemplified – that is what Leela Bordia is all about. One can see the magnitude, grace and fortitude instilled in this powerhouse of a lady who has strived all her life for the upliftment and betterment of her fellow countrymen and has been accredited with reinstating the glory and stature of Blue Pottery - this once upon a time nearly extinct and dying craft form.
The resurrection journey of Blue Pottery commenced during the year 1978, when Leela Bordia was engaged in social welfare activities in the villages in and around Jaipur district of Rajasthan, India. During her forays she chanced upon noticing some artisans selling their wares of traditional Blue Pottery items. She was instantly attracted to the vibrancy, grace, feel and demure kind of styling of the traditional Blue Pottery merchandise on display. She however saw that despite having the skills of this fine craft, the craftsmen appeared to be in a paltry state of affairs. She realized that the craftsmen had no means of marketing their products and had to sustain on the meagre sum of money that they made when a sale was made by them, which was by no means a regular feature for them.
