Dutch Canal Boat Trip Negombo Sri Lanka
Video of Negombo a small port town north of Colombo. In the eighth and ninth century the Arabs came to the harbour of Negombo for the export of spices. In the colonial period Negombo was a centre for the export of cinnamon. The Portuguese built a fortification and converted many inhabitants to Catholicism. The Dutch conquered the town in the middle of the seventeenth century and expelled the Portuguese. They constructed a network of canals to simplify the transport of spices from the hinterland. At the end of the eighteenth century the British took it from them without a struggle. Nowadays few monuments are silent witness of the colonial period.
The Dutch have constructed a canal at Negombo in northern direction along the coast. The canal was constructed in the seventeenth century for the shipping of spices and other commodities. Nowadays the canal is useless for transport because it was silted up. But the water is still useful for the irrigation of the rice fields along the canal. The fields are part of small villages along the canal. The villagers have built bridges for bikers and pedestrians. Many villagers have a small boat for transport by water. The only sounds during a boat trip on the canal are the splashes of the paddles in the water and the singing of the birds in the trees. These sounds of nature come together with nice views of remote country houses and nature areas with palm trees and banana trees.

Diving in Sri Lanka off Negombo beach. I think the place is called reef 3 or something. Incredible vis +30m. Need to get a red filter. Great place to dive, awesome people, Malinga the slinger. Filmed with GoPro 4 Black and GoPro 3+. Edited in Imovie - 3D text added in Final Cut Pro X. Saw some cool stuff but no massive fish / mammals known to frequent the area. Witnessed a couple Stingrays napping under coral. Recored and Edited on the 24th March 2016 on location in Sri Lanka on the Goldie Lookin' Macbook.
