USA: NEW YORK: PROTESTS AT PAUL SIMON'S NEW MUSICAL

Celebrities had to walk past protesters this week to see Paul Simon's new musical open on Broadway.
The Capeman is based on the life of a Puerto Rican teenager who stabbed two other boys to death in 1959 and relatives of the victims protested outside the theatre.
But that is not the only crisis troubling the show - reviews for the play's storyline have been rather lukewarm and may even bring down the curtain.
Thursday night's premiere of Paul Simon's musical The Capeman sparked the usual Broadway razzmatazz.
Hundreds of reporters, photographers, fans and stars lined up to get a glimpse of the opening festivities.
The Capeman is based on the real-life story of Salvadore Agron, a cape-wearing gang member convicted of murdering two boys on a playground in Hell's Kitchen - the working-class neighbourhood which is just a stone's throw from the Times Square theatre.
The show portrays Agron's spiritual growth from teenage thug to prison prophet.
16-year-old Agron became the youngest man ever on New York state's death row.
His sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1962. He was later paroled and died of a heart attack in 1986, aged 43.
Inside the theatre, the audience seemed to delight to the sounds of Paul Simon.
The soulful presentation of the Agron story showed strong singing and acting talent - Latin rhythms underscoring the tragic story of the victims and the accused.
But reviewers had a different take on the tale - they called the musical's storyline tepid and troubled.
Some even predicted a short run - but it will take more than a lot of bad reviews to trouble Paul Simon.

The Capeman has met with not only resistance from the reviewers, it also sparked protests by victims' rights groups.
They urged the celebrities and other theatre-goers to give the musical a miss, accusing Paul Simon of romanticising a horrible tragedy.

We focus on the key theatrical art form, book writing, with two celebrated veteran librettists, Richard Maltby, Jr. and Thomas Meehan, along with Laurence Maslon, editor of the impressive new collection “American Musicals: The Complete Books and Lyrics of 16 Broadway Classics 1927-1969,” Meehan, whose books for musicals include “Annie” and “The Producers,” and Maltby, who wrote librettos for “Miss Saigon” and “Ain't Misbehavin'” among others, join Maslon in discussing the important books for shows included in the anthology, among them “Gypsy,” “Show Boat,” “Oklahoma! “ and “As Thousands Cheer.”

Beautiful Brooklyn:
Brooklyn used to be a city by itself. It became part of NY over 100 years ago. Brooklyn has many interesting and sites. Just go over a bridge, take a bus or subway and you are there.
Street Art in New York:
Street art can be drawings on paper that have been wheat-pasted onto the side of a building; images stenciled right onto walls; sculptures screwed onto a stop sign pole; even tiles arranged to form 1980s video game aliens, which the French street artist, Space Invader, put up dozens of during a recent visit to the city. Did you notice? Thought not.
But a well-planned walk with a trained eye through neighborhoods like Chelsea, SoHo and the Lower East Side in Manhattan, and Williamsburg and Dumbo — especially near the waterfront — in Brooklyn can change that.
You can also load a Google map marked with Brooklyn and Manhattan hot spots (on Streetsy's About page). Dedicated students can move on to Flickr, the photo-sharing site, where searches for specific artists yield oodles of examples.
The Tree Museum:
Brilliant creations by artist Katie Holten who has tagged over 100 trees along the Grand Concourse — each with an accompanying audiocast by Bronxites who live(d) along or near the Concourse speaking their thoughts of the grand boulevard. Trees in the museum can be identified by a marker on the sidewalk bearing a phone # to call to hear the audiocast. Maps available at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The Tree Museum was scheduled to close October 12th, but will remain open until January 3rd, 2010.
New York was founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624. Anything Goes - The View
Anything Goes is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The original book was a collaborative effort by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, heavily revised by the team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Billy Crocker is a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin aid Billy in his quest to win Hope. The musical introduced such songs as Anything Goes, You're the Top, and I Get a Kick Out of You.
Since its 1934 debut at the Neil Simon Theatre (at the time known as the Alvin) on Broadway, the musical has been revived several times in the United States and Britain and has been filmed twice. The musical has long been a popular choice for school and community productions.
A revival of the 1987 Broadway rewrite opened on April 7, 2011, produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company. Previews began on March 10, 2011. This production is directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall with musical supervision by Rob Fisher, dance arrangements by David Chase and designs by Derek McLane and Martin Pakledinaz. This revival retains much of the 1987 orchestrations by the late Michael Gibson with some additions from arranger Bill Elliott.
The show's cast includes Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney, Joel Grey as Moonface Martin, Laura Osnes as Hope Harcourt, Jessica Walter as Evangeline Harcourt, Colin Donnell as Billy Crocker, Adam Godley as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, John McMartin as Elisha Whitney, Jessica D. Stone as Erma, Robert Creighton as Purser, Andrew Cao as Luke, Raymond J. Lee as John, and Walter Charles as the Captain. The production has been received generally very well by the critics and has received a total of 9 Tony Award nominations and 10 Drama Desk Award nominations, including Best Actress in a Musical, Best Director of a Musical and Best Revival of a Musical. The production was originally scheduled to run through July 31, 2011, but due to enthusiastic reviews the run was extended until January 8, 2012.
On a side note, the song Anything Goes is played on Galaxy News Radio, a fictional radio station, in the post-apocalyptic video game Fallout 3.

Theater Talk: “Junk” / “20th Century Blues”
A look at two new productions of the season. First, playwright Ayad Akhtar (2013 Pulitzer Prize-winner for Drama, “Disgraced”) and director Doug Hughes discuss “Junk,” their new play at Lincoln Center Theater about the world of high finance and eclipsed morality.
Next, a conversation about the dramedy “20th Century Blues” at Signature’s Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, focusing on issues faced by women over 60. Roger is the founding artistic director for both The Simon Studio (since 1978) in New York City and the Los Angeles Theatre Center Classical Theatre Lab (since 1990). Roger was awarded an NEA grant as producing director of National Public Radio’s Simon Studio Presents (also on XM Sirius cable radio and Time Warner Public Access TV). As an actor he recently played a role based on Hank Greenberg of AIG in Oliver Stone's WALL STREET2 opposite Michael Douglas and played the lead roles in the critically acclaimed indie feature THE SUBLET, in the film short JIMMY'S CAFE (Newport Beach Film Festival) and currently co-produces, directs and acts in THE SIMON STUDIO and Sarah Levine Simon's musical webseries BREAD TODAY!

Paul Schober, Longtime Director of Entertainment, Erie County Fair, Hamburg, NY
Paul J. Schober, 55, of Dunkirk, New York, died on November 5, 2019, at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, after a gallant multiple-year battle with cancer. Paul was born on April 28, 1964, the fifth of six sons of the late William J. Schober and Mary Irene (Van Den Vouver) Schober. After the premature deaths of his parents, Paul was raised by his Aunts, Mary J., Teresa, and Frances Schober, who have also predeceased him, along with the assistance of his brothers.
Paul attended Cardinal Mindszenty High School until its closing, and thereafter attended and graduated with honors from Dunkirk High School in 1982, where he was elected Student Council President. In 1986, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, with a minor in Political Science, from Colgate University, where he was a member of the College Council and Phi Delta Theta.
Paul’s fascinating career was spent as an entertainment and concert promoter, and as a talent buyer for various venues, including Melody Fair Theatre in North Tonawanda, and the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution, in Chautauqua, NY. At the time of his death, and his most rewarding role, Paul was the longtime Director of Entertainment at the Erie County Fair and Exposition, and Fairgrounds Gaming and Entertainment, positions he loved because of the terrific group of people he had the pleasure to work with.
In his thirty-year career in entertainment and talent buying, Paul had the opportunity to meet, book, and work with a huge variety of performers and entertainers, across numerous genres. A small list would include Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, ZZ Top, Charlie Daniels, Kelly Clarkson, Black Sabbath, Willie Nelson, and Evel Knievel, let alone all the other events that Paul promoted, including tractor pulls, freestyle motocross, car and bus demolition derbies, jugglers, clowns, magicians, and racing pigs.
Paul was a member of the International Association of Fairs & Expositions (IAFE); the International Entertainment Buyers Association (IEBA); and a United States Representative for an Entertainment and Performing Arts Tour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Although his professional work was very important to Paul, and he excelled at it, it was his roles as son, brother, nephew, uncle, great-uncle and friend that he will forever be remembered. Paul was an impresario when it came to connecting with his family, and his friends, and was more than willing to assume the role of “Master of Ceremonies” at any gathering.
Paul and his incredible grace, wit, generosity, charm and love will be dearly missed by his brothers, William F. (aka Fritz) Schober, John J. (Susan) Schober, Joseph E. (Alma) Schober, Edmund M. (Mary Beth) Schober, and Michael W. (Shelly Feser) Schober; his adoring nieces and nephews, Liam, Simon, Kristen, Andrew, Zachary, Teresa (Tess), Matthew, Michael, Mario, Max, Fritz, and Hans; his treasured great-nieces Mary Irene and Grace Elizabeth Siracuse; his Aunts and Uncle Ginny and Edmund Van Den Vouver, and Ruth Fitzgerald; his loving cousins, and his many amazing friends from coast to coast, with manyof them being friends since his days at School 4, and St. Mary’s in Dunkirk, NY. He was also predeceased by his Uncle, John G. (Yogi) Fitzgerald, and his cousin, Lynn (Fitzgerald) Riley.

Michael's personality and style were introduced to the world when he performed his original creation “The Spike Tower” on the NBC television special “The World’s Most Dangerous Magic II”. While covered with a mixture of gasoline and kerosene and secured by chains, Michael had only sixty seconds to escape before two walls of flaming steel spikes were thrust towards him at over 50mph. Bringing together seven illusionists from around the world, at just 21, Michael was the youngest performer on the show.
In the 2014 CW television series “Masters of Illusion”, hosted by Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Hit The Floor), Michael was featured, in five episodes, with his original grand illusions. Also during the show, special guest Ace Young, star of American Idol and Hair on Broadway, assisted Michael onstage for his “Walking Through Steel” illusion.
In addition, Michael has created and developed custom presentations for Fortune 500 companies and major corporations including Mazda, Hewlett Packard, Grainger, Ernst & Young, The American Marketing Association, Harley-Davidson, Rite Aid, and Bayer.

Anatole Kaletsky is an award-winning journalist and financial economist who has written since 1976 for The Economist, the Financial Times and The Times of London before joining Reuters. His recent book, Capitalism 4.0, about the reinvention of global capitalism after the 2008 crisis, was nominated for the BBC's Samuel Johnson Prize, and has been translated into Chinese, Korean, German and Portuguese. Anatole is also chief economist of GaveKal Dragonomics, a Hong Kong-based group that provides investment analysis to 800 investment institutions around the world.
