Nelson Ghost Town, Nevada
**PLEASE NOTE** Nelson Ghost Town is its official name. It was abandoned for some time before being purchased by the present owners. Now it's used for movie and photo shoots. It is a tourist attraction, but it's the least commercialized as the others. The others I saw were completely rebuilt back to original state as well as roped off like a museum. This was the least touched out of them all, as stated in my narration in the beginning of the video. Exploring this place was a real pleasure.
This ghost town is in South Nevada in Nelson, El Dorado Canyon. It was first named El Dorado by the Spaniards when they first discovered it in 1775.
This ghost town used to be a thriving miners' town with 3 mines which operated from 1859 to 1945 at the end of World War II. It was one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada where they mined gold, silver, copper and lead yielding over $6 million. The town is made up of three (now abandoned) mines; Techatticup, Wall Street, and El Dorado Rand Group. The source of transportation for goods was by steamboat on the Colorado River just at the end of the road.
Most of the miners here were deserters from the Civil War. The town and mines had a very bad reputation as it was a lawless community being so isolated from the Sheriff and civilization. There were many killings and feuds here, so much so that it was an ordinary occurance. The U.S. Army set up an outpost here in 1867 to protect the community and riverboats' freight from Native Americans. The army left the camp in 1869 and the mines thrived once again until the end of the war.
The movie '3000 Miles to Graceland' with Kevin Costner and Kurt Russel used this area as part of their movie shoot where they blew up an airplane on-site. Remnants of the airplane were left behind and shown in this video.

On my birthday trip, I drove about 45 minutes away from Las Vegas Nevada to a ghost town in Nelson Nevada. Originally named El Dorado by the Spanish settlers who discovered this town in 1775.
It was pretty awesome, there's some airplane props that were used in the movie 3,000 Miles to Graceland.
Eldorado Canyon Nevada Ghost Town in Nelson Nevada
This is an old mining ghost town in Eldorado Canyon in Nelson Nevada. It is located about 45 minutes from Las Vegas. The mine opened in 1861 and stayed open until World War II. They mined gold and silver. The property is currently family owned. This is their collection of old cars and antiques from this era. It is free to walk the area and see all of the items. The Techatticup mine tour is not free but I recommend checking it out. Numerous movies, TV shows and videos were filmed here. One scene from 3000 miles to Graceland was filmed here with Kevin Costner.
Ghost Town: Nelson, Nevada
The community called Nelson was named for Charles Nelson, a camp leader who was slain in his home, along with four other people, in 1897 by the renegade Indian, Avote.
Originally called Eldorado in 1775, by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in the area that is now Eldorado Canyon. The town was the site of one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada and one of the biggest mining booms in state history.
Among the early mines established was the notorious Techatticup Mine in the middle of the canyon. Disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes resulted in wanton killings so frequent as to be routine and ordinary. Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it along with others in the town produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead. The mines in the canyon were active from about 1858 until 1945.

Ghost Town in Nevada.
It takes little over an hour to drive to Nelson from Las Vegas. Located close to the Arizona-California-Nevada border, not many people live here these days.
This is a VR180 video. Use your finger to swipe or mouse cursor to grab the screen and look around. Best viewed in 3D on a HMD. No host. No voice-over. No music. Just pure immersion.
A notorious place during the gold rush, a flash flood destroyed most of the town during the 1970s. These days, there are carcasses of old vehicles and even planes for you to check out.

There is a general store that sells soft drinks for $1 each. (Current as of April 2019.) There are also tours of the abandoned mines.

Nevada's Forgotten Mining History: Nelson Ghost Town
While there might be more than a few ghost towns in Nevada, Nelson has a history that trumps them all. Known as the first major find in Nevada in its prime the mines in this area were pumping out millions of dollars in Gold and Silver. It is said that gold still abounds in the Techatticup Mine just beyond the touch of safety thus never to be harvested.
We explored the Ghost Town which has been preserved, the many vehicles which tell the story of time passing and then made our way to the Jubilee Mine where we did a little self discovery mission into the crags of the graffiti ridden tunnels.

Nelson, Nevada Ghost Town: Golden History
Nevada has a rich history in gold mining and one of the best places to witness it is Nelson, NV. Many remnants of the wild west can still be found here, with many abandoned cars and authentic building to set the scenery just right. You can really get a great idea of what life in the middle of the Mojave without all the modern amenities that we're accustomed to today. In general, the city of Las Vegas attempts to update everything in order to be as modern as possible. This is the exact opposite. Visiting an authentic ghost town like Nelson will teach you a lot about how the State of Nevada was settled during its early years. During the Civil War, many people prefer to avoid conflict and head west to search for gold instead. This was, of course, illegal which basically made Nelson, Nevada a town run by a bunch of outlaws when it was first settled. The pioneers weren’t alone however and there was often conflict with the native Paiute tribe for control over land, filled with natural resources. Some Paiutes assimilated to the American way of life, while others still resisted the presence. Techatticup Mine was established in 1861 and it would prove to be one of Nevada’s most successful gold mines in the 1800’s. There appears to still be deposits of gold and silver and the main reason the area is abandoned is because, during World War II, other metals had priority.
This seems to be an extremely popular place to photograph and I was surprised to see people driving here after their weddings to take photos! The more you look around, the more eery things you might find scattered here. I even found an antique piano that looks like it's been outside for the past century! It’s only about an hour drive from Las Vegas and makes a good place to visit after a trip to the Hoover Dam. It certainly seems like it would take a bit of time away from an important day like a wedding but it does make for some unique scenery. Hopefully, the brides aren't just gold digging like the miners over a century ago! Nelson has also been a hotspot for films and TV shows sets within the past few decades. In fact, the crashed airplane here, which is a popular photo location was actually created after a scene from “3000 Miles to Graceland”. It also turned out that BBC was filming a TV show here that day and as I checked in, they told me to politely keep out of their way.

Nelson Nevada Factoids:
The area known as Nelson was originally called Eldorado in 1775, by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in the area that is now Eldorado Canyon.
The town was the site of one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada and one of the biggest mining booms in state history.
Gold and silver were discovered here around 1859. The rush to the canyon began in 1861, several mining camps were established in the canyon, and a steamboat landing at the mouth of the canyon on the Colorado River, called Colorado City.
In its heyday, the area established a reputation for being rough and lawless. During the American Civil War, deserters from both the Union and Confederate armies would wander there, hoping that such an isolated location would be the last place military authorities would look for them.
Between, 1901 and 1905 the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad was built across southern Nevada, through Las Vegas, to Daggett, California where it connected to the AT&SF, and the complete Salt Lake–Los Angeles line was opened on May 1, 1905. This nearby railhead ended the need for steamboats at Eldorado Canyon, the landing and the mill there were abandoned. The town of Nelson was born near the head of the canyon nearest the road to the railroad, the post office of Eldorado was closed on August 31, 1907 and moved to Nelson.

Nelson, back in 1775, wasn't Nelson but was called Eldorado by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in this area that is now Eldorado Canyon.
A hundred years later the prospectors and miners of the day took over and established the notorious Techatticup Mine.
Disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes resulted in wanton killings so frequent as to be routine and ordinary.
Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it along with others in the town produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead.
Nelson is located along Nevada State Route 165, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of its junction with U.S. Route 95. Route 165 continues east 5 miles (8 km) to a dead end at Nelsons Landing on the Colorado River, 18 miles (29 km) by water north of Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mojave. Nelson is about 25 miles (40 km) from Boulder City by road.
