-- About this video --
Today we have a long drive from Marahau to the Nelson Lakes National Park, so we get to enjoy the changing scenery standard from a New Zealand roadtrip. We reach the beginning of the Southern Alps which means we’ve hit the beautiful Nelson Lakes National Park.
We park up at Lake Rotoiti which is just off the main state highway and half a minute drive from the town of St Arnaud. First things first, we need to get that token photo of the Lake Rotoiti Jetty!
Here, we see wildlife, especially eels (tuna in Maori) under the jetty, as well as crazy-looking ducks and swans.
We also find “the hidden” Lake Rotoiti Jetty for your viewing pleasure.
Well, there’s not much else to say about Lake Rotoiti other than there are a couple of hikes in the area should you want to go exploring more.
So what do you think of Lake Rotoiti? Is it worth a pit stop for a South Island Road Trip? Let us know!

St Arnaud to Lewis Pass - Nelson Lakes, New Zealand Tramping Trip. Intro Clip
Edited intro to the video film I made of the 7-day tramp we did between Lake Rotoiti and Lewis Pass.
Music track in second half is Absolute Magnitude - by Sonic Generation from the third 'Looking Back' compilation CD from Looking Good Records.
(Overblown 'heartbeat' Dances with Wolves -trailer type beginning is a bit long, I think on reflection. (Whole film of the trip though has 4.5 hours running time))
Boyd and I hiked this in February 2006. Amazing trip.
(Clip naturally looks better viewed at 'High Quality' setting)
The route taken was as follows: from Lake Rotoiti up the Travers Valley to John Tait Hut, further up the Travers & over Travers Saddle, down into the Sabine. Up past Blue Lake & Lake Constance. Over Waiau Pass, up to Lake Thompson. Over Thompson Pass, round to an un-named pass above the East Matakitaki Valley. Down into the Matakitaki to Bobs Hut. Up over Three Tarn Pass to Ada Pass and finally down the St James walkway to the road.
Clip also exists here on my flickr page:

Snow at John Tait Hut Nelson Lakes National Park, NZ
A recent trip up the Travers Valley in Nelson Lakes National Park had an unprecendented large snowfall. It snowed constantly for over 6 days. This video was taken just after it started . The tramp in from Coldwater Hut at Lake Rotoiti to John Tait is about 5-6 hours. Chris & Mike/NZ

Out In The Back Yard -Kerr bay
St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes National Park.
Kerr Bay camp is located adjacent to Lake Rotoiti with a boat launching ramp nearby. It is surrounded by beech forest and 500 m from the St Arnaud village shop. The camp is not suitable for vehicles greater than 7 m in length.
There are five camping areas, each with varying numbers of sites: Bellbird, Fantail, Robin and Tui areas have powered sites with hardened surfaces, while the grassy Kaka area is more suitable for tents.
From mid December through to Easter each year the camps can be booked online through the Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre. Bookings open on 1 July each year. Prior bookings are essential for the Christmas holiday period, classic boat show and power boat regatta weekends and Easter.
After Easter through to mid December the camp sites can't be booked and all campers must register at the Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre or at the self-registration kiosk at Kerr Bay.
A day shelter provides kitchen and cooking facilities (stove; no pots, pans, cutlery etc). During the summer months the ablution block has hot showers (token operated), toilets, full access shower/toilet and washing machine and clothes dryer.
During winter, the showers (including full access shower/toilet) are closed and the washing machine and dryer are not available.
There is a sewage dump station opposite the cooking shelter.

Nelson Travel Guide - New Zealand Charming Experience
Nelson Travel Guide - New Zealand Charming Experience
Nelson is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson Tasman or the Top of the South. It is actually slightly north of the capital city of Wellington. Together with Richmond, it has a population of around 50,000 ranking it as New Zealand’s tenth most populous city and is the geographical centre of the nation.
Nelson is a compact coastal city set amongst some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery. The city is the economic and cultural centre for the Nelson-Tasman region and offers an excellent range of shopping, eating and cultural experiences with an abundance of parks, rivers, beaches and nature trails to explore. Nelson is named after British admiral Viscount Nelson and many streets and features such as Trafalgar Park and Hardy, Collingwood and Nile Streets, are named after his naval battles and comrades.
Nelson is New Zealand's oldest city since, although it was proclaimed a Bishop's See and city under letters patent by Queen Victoria on 27 September 1858 and after Christchurch's city charter, Pakeha settlement had started in earnest in Nelson in 1841, 9 years before the good ship Charlotte-Jane arrived in Christchurch on 16 December 1850. Nelson is usually New Zealand's sunniest city with over 2,500 sunshine hours per year.
The Nelson region covers five distinct geographic areas:
The urban centres of Nelson & Richmond
The highways of Mapua, Motueka and upper and lower Moutere, through rolling horticultural land
The idyllic coastline of Abel Tasman National Park
The heart of the parks, Golden Bay between the huge Kahurangi and tiny Abel Tasman national parks
The alpine lakes and rivers around St Arnaud - Nelson Lakes & Murchison including Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks
The Nelson economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries of seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry. Port Nelson is the biggest fishing port in Australasia. There are also a range of growth industries, including art and craft, aviation, engineering technology, and information technology. The region's official tourism organisation is Nelson Tasman Tourism, which operates i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Nelson City, Takaka in Golden Bay and in Murchison.
Nelson City is small enough to walk around, but for access from the surrounding suburbs and around the sites and attractions of the city and region you'll likely want to rent a car, take a taxi, or have a fresh set of legs and a bicycle. Nelson has a wide variety of excellent cafes and restaurants using fresh local produce. Nelson is the largest fishing port in Australasia, so the fresh seafood is always great. Nelson offers an excellent range of quality accommodation including Backpackers, Bed and Breakfasts (B&B's), Holiday Homes, Hotels, Lodges, Motels, Resorts and Serviced Apartments.
