Mauritius is a wonderful place to discover scuba diving. There are large areas of natural coral, bursting with underwater sea life and clear underwater visibility. If you are worried about big fishes, do not fret, its very rare to encounter a big shark. If you are a novice and wish to experience a scuba dive then Mauritius is a good place to try it out. It is likely that your hotel will have regular introductory dives at the swimming pool where you get to have a try out at the pool with the scuba equipment. It would be a taster to see if you like it and then go for a further dive in the Indian Ocean .

There are 23 dive centres registered with the Mauritius Scuba Diving Association. Many are based in hotels with some independent operators dotted all over the island with a few in the vicinity of Grand Baie. Diving is well regulated and of a good standard in Mauritius. Diving is all year around with the best times ranging from October to December and March to April. The most popular dive sites tend to be in the North and West, such as Flic en Flac and Troux aux Biches where there are ship wrecks to explore but this is only suitable for experienced divers.

Benjamin took me down to see St. Gabriel by ourselves. he warned me it was more than 30 meters in depth and we had to get down there quickly. As we descended, all I could see was dark blue. How on earth did he know which way it was?
We got down to about 25 metres and he started swimming so I dutifully followed.
I was concerned this dive might end up being a dud. But as you can see from the Video above, after a few minutes the fishing boat wreck simply loomed into view.
The vessel had been sunk on purpose to provide an artificial haven for marine life, and there was plenty of that!!
The depth -- 35 metres -- coupled with the tough swim to get to the site, meant this wasn't going to be a long dip so we started to head back up after just 32 minutes.
If you want diving cheerful and full of variety, Mauritius is pretty good. If you want my opinion on who to spend your time with as you explore what the island's waters have to offer.

1st time I try to film undersea. This was shot during summer 2012 in Mauritius.
Used my GoPro with a flat lense. Unfortunately the filters were nothing more than useless (surely too thin...), which renders a blue/green image. Kind of post-apocalyptic athmosphere.... :)

Djabeda Wreck Dive, Mauritius

Djabeda wreck is a Japanese fishing boat lying upright on a sandy bottom at 34 metres. The wreck is located just off the Coin de Mire (Gunner's coin) Island.

It is one of the great place fo snorkeling in Bali exploring the beauty of the coral reef and colorful fish. It is the coral reef right off shores from Vienna Beach Cottages. A great little place to stay for a few days enjoying the sea, sun and snorkeling.
