Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in the East of England, with a population estimated to be 184,500 in mid–2011. Historically part of Northamptonshire, for ceremonial purposes it now falls within the county of Cambridgeshire. Situated 75 miles (121 km) north of London, the city stands on the River Nene which flows into the North Sea approximately 30 miles (48 km) to the north-east. The railway station is an important stop on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. The unitary authority borders Northamptonshire and Rutland to the west, Lincolnshire to the north, and non-metropolitan Cambridgeshire to the south and east.
The local topography is flat and in some places lies below sea level, for example in the Fens that lie to the east of Peterborough. Human settlement in the area began before the Bronze Age, as can be seen at the Flag Fen archaeological site to the east of the current city centre also with evidence of Roman occupation. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery, Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral.
The population grew rapidly following the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, and Peterborough became an industrial centre, particularly noted for its brick manufacture. Following the Second World War, growth was limited until designation as a New Town in the 1960s. Housing and population are expanding and a £1 billion regeneration of the city centre and immediately surrounding area is underway. In common with much of the United Kingdom, industrial employment has fallen, with a significant proportion of new jobs in financial services and distribution.

British Railways Standard Class 5 No. 73050 is a preserved British steam locomotive. Unnamed in service, it has been named City of Peterborough; it is owned by Peterborough City Council and operated by the Nene Valley Railway on a 99-year lease.
73050 left Derby Works on 14 April 1954, and was chosen to represent the class at the International Railway Congress, Willesden, London between 26 and 29 May. After the exhibition, 73050 moved to its home shed of Bath Green Park to take up duties on the Somerset and Dorset (S&D) line from Bath to Bournemouth. 73050 was one of only 3 BR Standard Fives (73050 to 73052) to be built with the larger BR1G tender for working over this route. The only other locomotives to use these tenders were the large 9F 2-10-0s.
The engine's air brakes, fitted in 1979, were modified so that the engine's brakes work in conjunction with the air brakes when hauling a train. Every valve and component was dismantled and overhauled, with the intention of making the loco as reliable as possible for the future. The engine was returned to traffic in July 2005, before aesthetic completion.
The locomotive has appeared in the television adaptations of Agatha Christie's The Mystery of the Blue Train and Murder on the Orient Express, disguised to appear as a continental locomotive, and featured in the music video for Big Country's Fields of Fire. 73050 was booked for a special on the Nene Valley Railway on 15 August 2012 to mark Richard Paten's 80th birthday, but he died three weeks before. The organisers were determined that the train should still run.
On 21 September 2014, 73050 was taken out of traffic for another major overhaul, with no scheduled date for a return to service.

Places to see in ( Peterborough - UK ) Nene Valley Railway
The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) is a preserved railway in Cambridgeshire, England, running between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction. The line of Nene Valley Railway is 7 1⁄2 miles (12.1 km) in length. There are stations at each terminus, and three stops en route: Orton Mere, Ferry Meadows and Wansford.
In the early 1980s, the Nene Valley Railway ( NVR ) decided to extend its running line, which then terminated at Orton Mere station, along the route of the original Nene Valley Line to a new station west of the East Coast Main Line, adjacent to the new Railworld Museum. Peterborough Nene Valley opened, for the first time, on the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend of 26 May 1986. This extended the NVR to its current length, 7 1⁄2 miles (12.1 km).
Since 1999, there has been talk of the 'crescent link' project promoted by 'Railworld' – a scheme to allow the NVR to run trains through the westernmost end of the Nene Park, across the river Nene into the Peterborough mainline station to connect directly with East Coast, National Express East Anglia, East Midland Trains, Arriva Cross Country and First Capital Connect services.

Nene Valley Railway | 'Bulleid 50' | 25-26.02.2017
2017 marks 50 years since the last steam hauled services ran on the Southern network of Britain, with Bulleid Pacifics, and this year is set to be an exciting year for Southern events, on both the mainline with anniversary railtours lined up, and various galas across Preservation Railways up and down the country!!
The Nene Valley Railway was the first off the bat to host one of these, in the form of 'Bulleid 50' in place of the lines usual Winter Steam Gala, the 25th and 26th February. GBRF's 66735 Peterborough United naming ceremony & Nene Valley Railway bank holiday trains
I want to respectfully dedicate this video to Nick Sinclair 1964 - 2017 who was a driver for GB Railfreight and an avid Peterborough United fan and who was loved and respected by family, friends and colleagues
On this day in history GBRF class 66 no, 66735 received it's name in a small ceremony at Peterborough Nene Valley station on the Nene Valley Railway. This locomotive has been named Peterborough United after the football club that play just around the corner at the London Road Abax Stadium. The locomotive has also received a plaque dedicated and in memory of Nick Sinclair who will be remembered by so many people
Finally you also get a glimpse of the Nene Valley Railway's service train for the bank holiday Monday in this video as Battle of Britain class 4-6-2 no, 34081 92 Squadron is seen in service today hauling the train between Peterborough & Wansford then onto Yarwell Junction
