Birding in Ayampe: The Esmeraldas Woodstar in Refugio del Colibrí
We go birding in Ayampe in southwest Manabi province in Ecuador. The habitat here is a unique mix where dry forest meets a corredor of very green forest created by the Chongon-Colonche mountain range. This site has a diverse mixture of Choco and Tumbes species. There is a Jocotoco Reserve with a nice trail system and nice birding right alongside of the road. The Refugio del Colibri or “Refuge of the Hummingbird” has lodging set up for birders to take advantage of and is the perfect spot to find the mysterious Esmeraldas Woodstar, which is most numerous in March (no one knows where they go the rest of the year) but can be seen other months also. Ayampe is a bit south of Puerto Lopez and links in very nicely as part of a coastal birding circuit. BREAKFAST BIRDING AT CASA DIVINA, MINDO, ECUADOR
This video features a variety of birds that visited the main lodge in the early mornings at Casa Divina while I was a guest at the lodge from July 13-15, 2015. The photo of the Golden-headed Quetzal (which could be clearly heard at the crack of dawn but not so easily photographed in dim light) is courtesy of Efrain Toapanta, co-owner of Casa Divina.

Great-billed Hermit in the Yasuni
The Great-billed Hermit (Phaethornis malaris) is a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The taxonomy of this species and the Long-tailed Hermit is confusing. Most taxa previously consider subspecies of the latter (insolitus, moorei, ochraceiventris, bolivianus and margarettae) are now considered subspecies of the former. A satisfactory taxonomic treatment of the entire P. longirostris/P. superciliosus/P. malaris group is still lacking according to some Neotropical ornithologists. [1] Additionally, the taxon margarettae of the Atlantic forest of eastern Brazil is sometimes considered a separate species: Margaretta's Hermit (P. margarettae).
Guango Northern Mountain Cacique moments - Ecuador
Guango Lodge Northern Mountain Cacique moments - October 2015, in the cloud forest of Ecuador at 8800 feet altitude.
The mountain cacique (Cacicus chrysonotus) is a species of bird in the family Icteridae. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
We found these three hanging nests just a few yards from the Guango Lodge.
I've condensed several hours of standing around and waiting into a minute and twenty seconds of coming and going.

Ecuador Choco 2009 Part 7
The final part of the video starts at the Botrosa Road near Canande Lodge and features purple-throated fruitcrow, lemon-rumped tanager, buff-throated saltator, rufous mourner, plain xenops, spotted woodcreeper, barred puffbird, chestnut-mandibled toucan, a bi-coloured antbird that I didn't realise I was filming, and a magnificent spotted antbird. Back at Canande Lodge we have a lizard, white-necked jacobin, blue-grey tanager, red-capped manakin, broad-billed motmot and purple-crowned fairy, before returning to the Botrosa Road for rufous-tailed jacamar, slaty spinetail, black-capped pygmy-tyrant, grey-headed kite. Then we're back at Canande Lodge for green-crowned brilliant, purple-chested hummingbird, white-whiskered hermit, a very, very distant black-tipped cotinga, common tody-flycatcher, grey hawk and a lizard. Finally at the ferry on the way back to Quito we have a pied-billed grebe and shortly after an iguana to end a great trip.
