MATHERAN TOY TRAIN : Full Journey Scenic Coverage from Matheran to Neral !!!

I had gone to Matheran for a day trip. On the way back I saw a short queue for tickets of the Matheran - Neral train so I decided to wait for it. I bought a ticket to Neral. I then waited for the train to come into the station. It was the 12:50 pm service to Neral. It departed from Matheran at 1:10 pm, twenty minutes late. After a brief halt at Aman Lodge station, we began the treacherous descent down the ghat. We went from the forest of Matheran to the mountainside with breathtaking views of the valley. We curved beautifully under the northern tip of Matheran and then continued down the other side of the mountain. After going over two level crossings, we arrived at Water Pipe station. There vendors were selling Vada Pav, Raw Mango and Frooti. After five minutes we departed and continued the descent. Throughout the journey you can see the railway staff standing between coaches. They manually control the hand-brakes on each coach to make sure the train doesn't roll faster and faster down the ghat. They have a very crucial and dangerous job. After a little while, we reached Jummapatti station where we halted for ten minutes. We honked and departed with a jerk as we started the final leg of our journey down to Neral. We went round the massive curves and finally came down to sea level. We crossed an express train on the mainline before finally pulling into Neral at 3:15 pm, two hours since departure. The lovely scenic journey had finally come to an end.

We started from Chinchwad station and reached Karjat by Sinhgad Express .Then took local to Neral from there and reached to station.then purchased ticket for Matheran for Rs75. it took 2 hrs 30 min to reached Matheran , had best experience ever .First toy train ever to travel .

Chasing narrow gauge Neral - Matheran ToyTrain by road | UNESCO Heritage India

Finally the long pending plan to follow the Neral-Matheran NG Passenger by road on my bike fructified.

I start chasing the second morning service bound for Matheran all the way from its beginning point; Neral Junction & followed it till Dasturi Point beyond which vehicles are not permitted & where the road ends.

52103 NG Passenger starts off from Neral Jn. with High HorsePower NDM1 #405 from NRL (NERAL) NG DLS. Just before entering Jummapatti station, the train tackles double S curve. After that the train crosses the road several times. At Water Pipe station, the train crosses its downhill bound counterpart 52102 NG Passenger service headed by HHP NDM1 #407.

While returning to the base, I follow 52102 from Water Pipe till Jummapatti. While I was waiting at Jummapatti for 52102, a mixed departmental rake coming from Neral Jn. & bound for Matheran shows up behind yellow +green liveried HHP NDM1 #402. It then crosses downhill bound 52102.

All the NDM1 units seen in this video are homed at NRL (NERAL) NG DLS. NRL DLS has come up with fresh & new livery made up of red & green & has applied it on #403, #405, #407 as seen in this video.

Monsoon here is very nice and you can experience number of waterfalls on your way to Matheran. So give it a try if you want to experience some thrill. Winter here is the peak season for family travelers. Matheran is usually very busy on weekends, so if you wanted to come here in season on weekends make sure you pre book your hotel before coming.

Matheran is the smallest Hill station of India.Matheran is in Maharashtra and near to both Pune and Mumbai. If you are coming from Mumbai by car, You have to come through Panvel to Matheran. However, If coming from Pune to matheran or Mumbai to matheran by train Neral is the station you need to get off. From lonaval to matheran also you need to catch same train till karjat. From Neral to matheran you can take toy train till main market. Or taxis from Neral to Aman lodge and then walk till main market. You can also hire horses or hand carts from Aman lodge.

Hotels in matheran are cheap and best place is Near Matheran railway station or main market.
You can also take resorts on Matheran hill station if budget is good. If you want hotel booking I will suggest to book near central area. Rates in matheran vary depending on season. You can contact on given numbers above for best rates.

There are several hotels in matheran near market. There is no Airbnb or Oyo room in Matheran.

The iconic Matheran toy train, a major tourist attraction, Train services on the entire corridor were suspended after twin derailments in May 2016

which had partially resumed services nearly three months ago & start chugging on the entire 21-km stretch from Saturday 26th January 2018....

Services of the 110-year-old toy train, synonymous with the tourist spot located in the Western Ghats in the neighbouring Raigad district, were suspended in May 2016 following two derailments. However, services on the 2.5-km stretch between Aman Lodge and Matheran had resumed on 30 October last year.

Railway Authority put in place a foolproof system for the safety of passengers, including installing crash barriers, gabion walls and boundary walls

The service on the full stretch inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 26th Jan 2018

Matheran Hill Station, Neral, Karjat, Maharashtra (Monsoon)

Matheran is India's smallest hill station situated near Mumbai in Raigad district. An 800m asl hill station developed by British has the Maharashtra's only hill railway. With vehicles allowed only till Dasturi point rest of Matheran needs to be covered by foot or horse ride.
Note: Matheran Railway is closed until the tracks are repaired from oct 2019
