???????? Somsak Mining and Forest Glade Home, Kanchanaburi
The story of hard work, eternal love, loyalty and heart of gold: Glennis Setabundhu, Australian born lady arrived to Thailand more than 40 years ago. She married Somsak Setabandhu, a local who ran the family mining business in Pilok. They met in Australia, where he was studying for a masters degree. Due to difficulties in accessing Pilok 40 years ago, Auntie Glen lived in Bangkok while Somsak traveled back to her and their son once a week. Once upon a time this was very bustling area, when mining businesses were in their glory days. Thousands of miners, hundreds of merchants, shops, theaters and a casino kept this place busy around the clock. When the mining business faltered because of a drop in tin price, and Somsak got sick, Auntie Glen decided to move to Pilok. Since then, she has fallen in love with her home in the jungle. Although she moved there for her ailing husband, who has since passed away, she was also intent on converting the house and the area into a tourist attraction. She sold all mining equipment in order to fix the place and help 5 Burmese families who lost everything after tin price collapse. These 5 families still live here and helping her run the place.
