Neue Residenz Bamberg - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
Neue Residenz Bamberg - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
The four-winged complex of the New Residence was built in two stages. Firstly, the backwards two-winged section, which flanks the Obere Karolinenstrasse, was built from 1602 on in the Renaissance style under Prince Bishop von Gebsattel. Then, under Prince Bishop Lothar von Schönborn, the Baroque wings facing the Cathedral were built between 1697 and 1703 as a residence for the Prince Bishop by Leonhard Dientzenhofer.
The magnificent building complex has over 40 state rooms featuring stucco-work ceilings, furniture and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries. Painted on the walls of the Imperial Hall are 16 larger than life-sized portraits of emperors, the work of Melchior Steidl.
The Elector's Rooms, the Prince-Bishop's Apartments and the gallery with Old German and Baroque paintings (Branch of the Bavarian State Galleries) are of particular interest and there is a fine view from the Rose Garden in the Residence courtyard. Prince Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn had this regularly symmetrical garden laid out by Balthasar Neumann. It is bordered with clipped lime trees and a dainty garden pavilion (completed in 1757) and with around 4,500 roses in over 70 beds it is filled in summer with fragrance and colour. Every year, the rosen garden serenades take place there.

Places to see in ( Bamberg - Germany ) Neue Residenz
Places to see in ( Bamberg - Germany ) Neue Residenz
The Neue Residenz is a multi-wing listed building on Domplatz in the Upper Franconian town of Bamberg . It was from 1602 the residence of the Bamberg prince bishops and replaced the Old Court on the other side of the square in this capacity. Today, the sandstone complex houses the State Library and the State Gallery of Bamberg. From the rose garden of the New Residence you have a view of the St. Michael's Church and the roofs of the Bürgerstadt.
The Neue Residenz was built with its four-wing division into two phases. The first was under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp of Gebsattel from 1602, the rear two-winged part in the Renaissance style and built between 1697 and 1703 under Prince Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn with the help of Leonhard Dientzenhofer the front baroque part. From 1803 she was royal residence.
On June 1, 1815, the Bamberg residence became the scene of one of the last episodes of the Napoleonic era: Louis-Alexandre Berthier , a Marshal of Napoleon , was killed there by falling from one of the upper windows. He chose suicide because he did not want to fall into the hands of the marching Russian army . A commemorative plaque in the middle of the Residenzstraße commemorates the event.
The residence served the retired Greek royal couple Otto I and Amalie from 1862 to 1867 and 1875 as exile. Yet another time, the Neue Residenz was for a short time the scene of Bavarian history , when the elected government dodged under Prime Minister Hoffmann and the Diet in 1919 to Bamberg. The first democratic Bavarian constitution was passed in the Hall of Mirrors of Harmonie am Schillerplatz.
There are more than 40 State Rooms, such as the Marble Hall, the Mirror Room (each with stucco work by Antonio Bossi ) and the Imperial Hall. The Kaisersaal is located on the second floor of the central tract. He was decorated with murals and murals by Melchior Steidl in 1707/09 . Motifs include medallions with Roman emperors, the ancient four empires, a central ceiling representation of the Good Regiment , the sciences (represented by putti) and 16 larger-than-life imperial portraits. The blanket is designed as trompe-l'œil .

Seehof Palace and Park, Memmelsdorf, Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany
Seehof palace near Memmelsdorf was built in 1686 as summer residence for the Bamberg prince bishops and impresses its visitors with the beautiful park and its cascades.
Seehof palace in Memmelsdorf is often called Marquardsburg after its builder Marquard Schenk von Stauffenberg. The Prince Bishop's summer residence came into being in collaboration with important architects and constructors. Of course you will find magnificent interior furnishings inside the castle. During the 18th century, the palace garden was one of the most famous Rococo gardens in Germany. About 400 stone figures and benches were placed in the garden. Prince Bishop Friedrich Adam von Seinsheim initiated the construction of a water pipe from Stammberg hill into the garden to enable the splendid water garden fountains. However during secularisation and the following centuries many masterpieces were lost and the water pipe was destroyed. Seehof palace has now been restored to its former glory after a considerable renovation process. Visitors have access to nine rooms, for example the White Hall which contains a well-preserved ceiling fresco painted by Guiseppe Appiani, depicting Cupid and other angels. The orangeries, the palace chapel and the spacious park including its water garden fountains invite guests to stay. The park is often used for cultural events.

Bamberg, a bajor ékszerdoboz - Németország vonaltúra 2/3
Bamberg a legszebb bajor város, ahol eddig jártam.
Prótipp: mivel a szállások drágák, inkább próbálj magánlakást foglalni hotel helyett!

Germany: The Town of Bamberg
The Town of Bamberg is situated on the river Regnitz close to its confluence with the river Main.
The old town of Bamberg is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site sice 1993, primarily because of its authentic medieval appearance. The town established a documentation centre in 2005 to support World Heritage activities. Some of the main sights are:
the Bamberg Cathedral (1237), with the tombs of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II; the Alte Hofhaltung, residence of the bishops in the 16th and 17th centuries; the Neue Residenz, residence of the bishops after the 17th century; Bamberg State Library in the New Residence; the Old Town Hall (1386), built in the middle of the Regnitz river, accessible by two bridges; Klein-Venedig (Little Venice), a colony of fishermen's houses from the 19th century along one bank of the river Regnitz; Michaelsberg Abbey, built in the 12th century on one of Bamberg's Seven Hills and the Altenburg, castle, former residence of the bishops.

Bamberg cathedral, Bavaria, Germany
Bamberg Cathedral is one of the largest such buildings in Germany, alongside the rest of the Old Town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is more than 1,000 years old although most of what we can see today is somewhat younger. It measures around 94 metres by 28 metres and is around 26 metres high and the towers are each around 81 metres.
The cathedral was started by Heinrich, King of Germany, who in the year of his accession began construction. That cathedral was not much smaller than the one we can see today being 75 metres long and with two towers – quite a feat of engineering for the time. It was consecrated on Heinrich's birthday, 6 May 1012. Heinrich was later canonised in 1146.
It fell victim to a fire in 1081 – a common occurance in those times and the fire claimed all the interior art and fittings but not the structure although in 1111 Bishop Otto had it rebuilt completely. That rebuilt church burned down in 1185.
In 1047, the body of Pope Clement II, who had been Bishop of Bamberg from 1040-6 was transferred from Rome to Bamberg and was buried in the cathedral. With the destruction of the tomb of Pope Benedict V at Hamburg at the beginning of the 19th century, this became the only papal grave outside what is today France or Italy.
Most of what we can see today dates to the thirteenth century and the rebuilding work that took place then . The rebuilt cathedral was consecrated on 6 May 1237.
During the 17th century, the interior of the cathedral was changed to Baroque style. The medieval coloured windows were removed, the interior was whitened with frescoes being painted out. Later the rood screens were demolished and new high altars set up in both choirs.
In 1803 with the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, the Bishopric of Bamberg was secularized and became a part of the Electorate of Bavaria. Ludwig I of Bavaria, saw the cathedral as a national monument and attempted to revert it back to its medieval look and replaced Baroque art with Romanesque Revival art. It is for this reason that we can see so many styles in the cathedral today.
The bells date to between 1200 and 1972. Their weight varies from 170kg for a bell made in 1972 to 5,200 kg for a bell from 1311. The oldest bells date from the beginning of the thirteenth century.
The cathedral square is fronted by Renaissance buildings of the Alte Hofhaltung which was where the bishops lived from the fourteen century to 1602 and the Baroque Neue Residenz, the bishops’ palace from 1602 to 1803.

The Bamberg Cathedral is a church in Bamberg, Germany, completed in the 13th century. The cathedral is under the administration of the Roman Catholic Church and is the seat of the Archbishop of Bamberg. Since 1993, the cathedral has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of Bamberg.
It was founded in 1002 by King (and later Emperor) Heinrich II (Henry II) and consecrated in 1012. After the first two cathedrals burned down in the 11th and 12th centuries, the current structure, a late Romanesque building with four large towers, was built in the 13th century.
The cathedral is about 94 m long, 28 m broad, 26 m high, and the four towers are each about 81 m high. It contains many works of art, including the marble tomb of the founder and his wife, the Empress Kunigunde, considered a masterpiece of the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, and carved between 1499 and 1513.
Another well-known treasure of the cathedral is an equestrian statue known as the Bamberg Horseman (German: Der Bamberger Reiter). This statue, possibly depicting the Hungarian king Stephen I, most likely dates to the period from 1225 to 1237.
The cathedral is about 94 m long, 28 m broad, 26 m high, and the four towers are each about 81 m high. The cathedral has a choir at each end. The eastern choir is the oldest part of the cathedral, still in pure Romanesque style. The western choir is early Gothic and its vault was built from 1232. The northern transept holds a late Gothic (c. 1500) altar dedicated to Mary (Mühlhausener Altar). It was previously located in the Protestant parish church of Mühlhausen. In 1781, it was replaced and then sold off in 1891. Given to Archbishop Joseph von Schork (de), he gifted it in 1904 to the cathedral.
The cathedral square is also fronted by the Renaissance buildings of the Alte Hofhaltung (de) and the Baroque Neue Residenz (de), the palaces of the bishops from the 15th century to 1602 and from 1602 to 1803, respectively. Originally known as Hofplatz or Burgplatz, after secularization the square was renamed Karolinenplatz in honour of the then Queen of Bavaria, Karoline. Only in 1949, did Domplatz become the official name for the area. Previously, this had been limited to just the immediate surroundings of the cathedral.
