Places to see in ( Reno - USA )
Reno is a city in the U.S. state of Nevada, located in the western part of the state, approximately 22 miles from Lake Tahoe. Known as The Biggest Little City in the World, Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos. It is the county seat of Washoe County, in the northwestern part of the state. The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area (along with Sparks) occupies a valley informally known as the Truckee Meadows. It is named after slain Union Major General Jesse L. Reno.
Reno is the third-most populous city in Nevada after Las Vegas and Henderson and the most populous city in the state outside the Las Vegas Valley. Before the late 1950s, Reno was the gambling capital of the United States, but Las Vegas' rapid growth, American Airlines' 2000 buyout of Reno Air, and the growth of Native American gaming in California have reduced its business. Older casinos were torn down (Mapes Hotel, Fitzgerald's Nevada Club, Primadonna, Horseshoe Club, Harold's Club, Palace Club), or smaller casinos like the Comstock, Sundowner, Golden Phoenix, Kings Inn, Money Tree, Virginian, and Riverboat were either closed or were converted into condos.
Because of its location, Reno has traditionally drawn the majority of its California tourists and gamblers from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, while Las Vegas has historically served more tourists from Southern California and the Phoenix area.
Several local large hotel casinos have shown significant growth and have moved gaming further away from the downtown core. These larger hotel casinos are the Atlantis, the Peppermill and the Grand Sierra Resort. The Peppermill was chosen as the most outstanding Reno gaming/hotel property by Casino Player and Nevada magazines. In 2005, the Peppermill Reno began a $300 million Tuscan-themed expansion.

Native basket event at the Nevada Museum of Art
RENO, Nev. - In celebration of the blockbuster exhibition TAHOE: A Visual History, and to honor Nevada Day, the E. L. Wiegand Foundation presents a day of free activities at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery. Friday, October 30, 2015, visitors to the Museum will be treated to free admission all day from 10 am 6 pm. That afternoon, from noon until 4 pm, the public is invited to bring their Native American baskets to the Museum for analysis by a panel of basket experts.
As part of the exhibition, TAHOE: A Visual History, the Nevada Museum of Art has gathered the largest collection of Washoe baskets ever assembled in one place. This part of our region's history reveals that at the turn of the twentieth century a basket craze swept the West. As a result many people throughout the community possess a Washoe or other Native American basket for which they may be uncertain of the history. In celebration of Nevada's Native American culture, people are encouraged to bring their Native basket to the Museum, where a panel of prominent basket experts will help identify and describe the object's origins. Panelists include Brian Bibby, Marvin Cohodas, Catherine Fowler, Gene Hattori, and SueAnn Monteleone. Visitors are encouraged to bring as many baskets as they like. This free event takes place October 30, 2015, from noon until 4 pm.
Throughout the entire Friday, October 30, Nevada Day holiday, the Nevada Museum of Art offers free admission for all visitors. The Museum is open 10 am to 6 pm that day.
The Nevada Museum of Art has organized the first major art historical survey exhibition of one of America's most beloved landscapes. TAHOE: A Visual History spans over two centuries of cultural and creative production related to the second largest freshwater alpine lake in the United States and features more than 400 artworks by 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers, and sculptors. A 488-page book by the same name, co-published with Skira Rizzoli and distributed by Random House, accompanies the exhibition.
TAHOE: A Visual History is organized by the Nevada Museum of Art and curated by Ann M. Wolfe. It is on view through January 10, 2016 exclusively at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery located at 160 West Liberty Street in downtown Reno, Nev.
E. L. Wiegand Foundation Presents Nevada Day Free Admission and Bring Your Native Baskets to the Museum is exclusively sponsored by the E. L. Wiegand Foundation.
