Neve Tzedek Tel Aviv Israel Spring 2019
Abode of Justice) is a neighborhood located in southwestern Tel Aviv, Israel. It was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside the old city of the ancient port of Jaffa. Originally a Mizrahi Jewish and Yemenite Jewish neighbourhood, for years, the neighborhood prospered as Tel Aviv, the first modern Hebrew city, grew up around it. Years of neglect and disrepair followed, but since the early 1980s, Neve Tzedek has become one of Tel Aviv's latest fashionable and expensive districts, with a village-like atmosphere. Literally, Neve Tzedek means Abode of Justice, but it is also one of the names for God (Jeremiah 50:7).

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Neve Tzedek was established in 1887, 22 years before the 1909 founding of Tel Aviv, by a group of Mizrahi Jewish families seeking to move outside of over-crowded Jaffa. Soon, additional small developments grew up around Neve Tzedek and were incorporated into the contemporary boundaries of the neighbourhood.
The residents preferred to construct the new quarter with low-rise buildings along narrow streets. These homes frequently incorporated design elements from the Jugendstil/Art Nouveau and later Bauhaus art movements and featured contemporary luxuries such as private bathrooms.
At the beginning of the 1900s, some artists and writers made Neve Tzedek their residence. Most notably, future Nobel prize laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon, as well as Hebrew artist Nachum Gutman, used Neve Tzedek as both a home and a sanctuary for art. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook was the first Rabbi of Neve Tzedek; he even maintained a Yeshiva there. During his time in Neve Tzedek he became very close friends with many of the writers, especially Agnon.
However, as Tel Aviv began to develop away from the Jaffa core, the more affluent people started to move out from the southern end of the city to inhabit the newly-developing northern areas. With its buildings abandoned, neglected and subjected to the unsightly corrosive effects of the shore atmosphere upon concrete and stucco, Neve Tzedek degenerated into disrepair and urban decay. As with the rest of South Tel Aviv, after 1948, it became a predominantly Mizrahi area. By the 1960s, city officials deemed the neighbourhood – by this time almost a slum – incompatible with the modern image of a busy, bustling city. However, plans to demolish the historic neighbourhood to make way for high rise apartments were eventually cancelled as many Neve Tzedek buildings were placed on preservation lists. At the same time, the old, worn-out neighbourhood was also becoming appreciated as an oasis of the semi-pastoral and picturesque amidst the modernist development of the city center.

Neve Tzedek - An Artsy Oasis in the Heart of Bustling Tel Aviv
Tucked inside one of Tel Aviv’s oldest districts, lies an architectural gem with a young, beating heart. Established in 1887, Neve Tzedek, the first Jewish neighborhood outside of the old port city of Jaffa, has recently become a trendy stomping ground for artists of all modalities, who fit in perfectly with the district’s restored quaint Oriental architecture.
Flavors of Israel- Anita Ice Cream in Neve Tzedek
Anita’s world-famous boutique ice cream all started about 20 years ago in Anita's small little house kitchen. It has become one of Israels top ice cream places to go to and has branches from Australia to even New York and don't worry- mama Anita still approves all the new recipes! Joseph Sopher gave ILTV's Adi Caspi some tasting to see why the lines are so long!
Tel Aviv Vlog: Florentin Hidden Gems (Best Instagrammable Spots!)
Tel Aviv, Israel has so many amazing places to check out that most tourists don't know about, that's what I'm here for! To help you discover new and fun places!
Today we are visiting a neighborhood in Tel Aviv (TLV) called Florentin.
The first spot is Neve Tzedek known for being the first Jewish neighborhood in Tel Aviv and was created in the late 1800's. It was and still is an artist district where poets, writers, painter and musicians lived at and still do today. There is a world famous dance school in the area, lots of cafes, fashion boutiques, lounges, jewelry shops and more. Great place to get those Instagram photos because of the gorgeous European like architecture. Total Boho vibes here.
Then we are off to our second spot called Mitcham HaTachana which is just a short walk from the Neve Tzedek.
In Mitcham HaTachana also known as the old train station of Tel Aviv/Jaffa you will find similar vibes, art galleries, cafes, shops, lounges, ice cream shops. The main difference is that this location is far fancier and the other one is more boho style.
After a walk I take you to one of my favorite places, Vicky, Christina, followed by a vegan lunch at Cafe Greg.

Next to Eden cinema two identical houses stand. The twin houses were designed and built in 1913-1914 by the contractor Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche, the son of Aharon Chelouche and one of Neve Tzedek's founders. The twin houses were built for two of Aharon's older grandchildren.
Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche (1870-1934) was among Tel Aviv's primary founders. He was a merchant, entrepreneur, contractor, land buyer for the Jewish settlement, a generous donor and an important public leader. Armed with creativity and vision and fully backed by his family fortune, Yosef Eliyahu knew how to seize the growth momentum of the first and second Aliyah.
Yosef Eliyahu was full of initiatives and enterprises; manufacture and import of construction material, a luggage factory, a flooring factory, jewelry design, two banks, land and construction companies and more. Among the many houses he built; the girls' school and the boys' school in Neve Tzedek (today Suzanne Dellal Center), 32 of Ahuzat Bayit first homes and the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium building.
Yosef Eliyahu decided that the construction increase in Tel Aviv requires the foundation of a Silicate bricks factory, but he was having difficulties getting the necessary knowledge. With no hesitations, he went to Egypt- a 43 years old, wealthy and honorable man- and pretended to be a simple construction worker. He got a job at a local Silicate factory and worked his way up the ladder until he learned all the secrets of the Silicate manufacture.
The Chelouche family took upon herself, among many other things, the maintenance of the ottoman train system and even the food distribution for the entire population, both Arab and Jewish, during the great famine of 1917.
After World War 1, Yosef Eliyahu was appointed a member of the first city council. His fluency in the Arabic language and his good relations with the Arabic public figures helped him many times to meditate between the Arabic and Jewish residents of Tel Aviv. His whole life he insisted that the fulfillment of the Zionist vision will only be achieved through collaboration and true friendship with the Arabic population in Israel.
