House of Menander - Casa Del Menandro, Scavi di Pompei - family home of Poppaea Sabina
Let me show you around Casa Del Menandro/ House of Menander, a 2000 year old well preserved Roman villa which lay buried under volcanic ash for many centuries.
Historians believe that this was the family home of Poppaea Sabina who was Emperor Nero's second wife.
Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the town of Pompeii was buried under many feet of volcanic ash. The ash preserved Pompeii and the Casa Del Menandro for 1700 years until the first excavations (Scavi) began.
Inside the columns stand and the frescoes remain on the walls of the house, giving the visitor a clear indication of how the citizens of the ancient Roman Empire had once lived.
It's apparent that the occupants of this house had a better quality of life during those Biblical times than some of the people living on the planet today!!

The Aegean Sea is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Greek and Anatolian peninsulas. The sea has an area of some 215,000 square kilometres. In the north, the Aegean is connected to the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea by the straits of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus.
Athens is the capital of Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire. The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple. The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, preserves sculptures, vases, jewelry and more from Ancient Greece.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace include the Rotunda that has been both a church and a mosque. Much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout.

Especially at archaeological sites, where there are many ruins, many tourists have difficulty imagining exactly how the site was in its original form. So to assist in the recognition of the site, one can present three-dimensional recreations of models, of temples, of various monuments as they were in antiquity, in addition to a recreation of life, the way of life of the ancients. This way with 'augmented reality', by walking in the archaeological site, one can relive moments from antiquity.

The device used by the user, and it is the one just behind me, is based on a portable computer, some special glasses and a camera. The image the computer receives from the camera is analysed by a special programme so it automatically recognises the object seen by the user, understands the perspective and angle from where it is being seen and automatically adapts some graphics, some special models that represent the ancient monuments so that these appear as if they exist in reality before the user's eyes.

There is the possibility, and it is something we're working on at the moment, for the user with his own device to automatically receive the content, the various graphics and audio content, and to follow the guided tour through his own device when he visits the archaeological site or museum. Of course, in that case we speak of a different technology than what we're discussing. We're talking about a PDA or a mobile phone which gives a different type of presentation but the same type of functionality to the user.
