The New Cathedral is, together with the Old Cathedral, one of the two cathedrals of Salamanca, Spain. It was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries in two styles: late Gothic and Baroque.
Building began in 1513 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1733. It was commissioned by Ferdinand V of Castile of Spain. It was declared a national monument by royal decree in 1887.
The building began at a time when the gothic style was becoming less popular and was merging with the new Renaissance style, giving the resulting Plateresque style in Spain. However, this cathedral retained more of its Gothic character because the authorities wanted the new cathedral to blend with the old one. Thus the new cathedral was constructed, continuing with Gothic style during the 17th and 18th centuries.
However, during the 18th century, two elements were added that broke with the showy form with the predominant style of the building: a Baroque cupola on the transept and the final stages of the bell tower (92 m). The new cathedral was constructed without the subsequent destruction of the old cathedral as normally happened but a wall of the new cathedral, leans on the North wall of the old one. For this reason, the old cathedral had to be reinforced, and the bell tower was constructed on the old one. Two of the main architects of the cathedral were Juan Gil de Hontañón and his son Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in 1538. Its main entrance consists of three richly decorated arcs, each leading to the three naves (sections) of the church.
Cracks and broken windows are visible reminders of the devastating effects of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, still visible today. After the earthquake, repairs were necessary to the cupola and the base of the tower which were reinforced with a lining of lines of sillares, in the form of a pyramid trunk that spoiled the basic profile of the tower (this tower is a virtual twin of the tower of the cathedral of Segovia). The moment of this catastrophe is commemorated with the Mariquelo tradition on October 31, when every year residents climb to the cupola high above and play flutes and drums.

La diócesis de Salamanca tiene dos catedrales a elegir: Santa María, la vieja (s. XII-XIV), y la Asunción de la virgen, la nueva (s. XVI-XVIII). En contraste con muchas otras catedrales, en Salamanca no se derribó la antigua catedral para construir la nueva en el mismo lugar sino se construyó la catedral nueva al lado de la vieja que forma una especie de una nave lateral hoy en día, o una capilla enorme. Ambas son una preciosidad hoy por su forma muy particular, una pareja de dos hermanas muy distintas, éxtasis puro en piedras.
Salamanca's Two Cathedrals
The diocese in Salamanca offers two cathedrals: the old Holy Mary cathedral (12th to 14th century) and the new assumption of Mary cathedral (16th to 18th century). Unlike many other cathedrals, the old one was not demolished to build the new one on the same place, but was left where it was to construct the new one at its side, as a kind of a independent side aisle or a huge chapel. The extraordinary arrangement of the two cathedrals make them unique today, two very different, beautiful sisters, pure ecstasy in stones.

Die Diözese von Salamanca kann mit zwei Kathedralen aufwarten: der Liebfrauendom, erbaut zwischen dem 12. und dem 14. Jahrhundert, und der Mariä-Himmelfahrts-Kathedrale, errichtet zwischen dem 16. und dem 18. Jahrhundert. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Kathedralen wurde die alte in Salamanca nicht abgerissen, um die neue am selben Ort hochzuziehen, sondern stehengelassen, um die neue neben ihr aufzubauen, als eine Art Seitenschiff oder gewaltige Kapelle. Die ungewöhnliche Anordnung der zwei Kathedralen machen sie heute zu einer ganz besonderen Kostbarkeit, ein Paar zweier ganz unterschiedlicher schöner Schwestern, steingewordene Ekstase.

Entering through the North Gate of the New Cathedral (off the Plaza Anaya) you can not help but notice the miniature carvings that run in the long stripes on the facade

The Old Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral Vieja de Santa María) is one of two cathedrals in Salamanca, Spain, the other being the New Cathedral of Salamanca. Juan Francés de Iribarren was organist at the Old Cathedral in 1717–1733.
Salamanca Catedral Vieja was founded by Bishop Jerome of Périgord, in the 12th century and completed in Romanesque / Gothic style in the 14th century. Salamanca Catedral Vieja is dedicated to Santa Maria de la Sede (Saint Mary of the See).
The apse houses a large cycle of 53 tableaux, 12 of which by the 15th-century Italian artist Dello Delli, depicting the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. A fresco of the Final Judgement is over them.
