Coromandel, New Zealand | New Chums Beach | Port Jackson | Stony Bay
In this video, I share 3 adventures from my travels around the Coromandel in New Zealand.
New Chums Beach is a popular spot. The walk starts at Whangapoua Beach and crosses a tidal river. Tip: Go at low tide. The path is along the rocky beach and over the hill. It can get muddy in winter!
From Colville to Port Jackson is a scenic drive on gravel road and you'll want to stop multiple times for photos. This is the left branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Port Jackson has a campsite that's empty in winter but I've heard is packed in summer. Beyond Port Jackson, you ford a river and eventually reach a carpark at another beach with a walk that connects to Stony Bay.
Stony Bay is at the end of the right branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Again, it's gravel roads but with a few more houses. Stony Bay has a DoC campground and is the other end of the walk from Port Jackson.

New Chums Beach, New Zealand 2015
A short video of the beautiful New Chums Beach during a holiday trip in New Zealand's north island.
The people, food and the views were simply amazing in New Zealand. Thank you for having us and for the great time, definitely worth going again.
New Chums Beach is a beach in the Wainuiototo Bay on the northeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, near Whangapoua.
A fantastic place to visit and have a swim, really enjoyed this beach and was worth the travel.
In 2006, New Chums Beach was named one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world by Britain's The Observer and highly rated by Lonely Planet and National Geographic.

New Zealand road trip (New chum beach)
Finding new chum beach from Whangapoua beach, this took us three attempts for being a little unprepared. So after walking the beach, crossing the lagoon, navigating the rocky shoreline, and then deciding to film the last stomp through the bush to the eagerly awaited destination, we found new chum beach, which was well worth the effort!
Tip if you want to do this walk, wait until a Low ish tide and take some shoes...it’s relatively simple to find but you need to wade a lagoon so be sure to have you’re swimming kit on!
If you’re watching our videos, that’s great :) they’re intended for our family back home in the UK, a way of keeping them in touch with what we’re doing, they’re pretty raw videos but if you enjoy them and find them useful let us know, thanks for watching.

HUGE CLIFF JUMP - Whangapoua NZ
A few clips from a trip with the mates down to Whangapoua in the Coromandel, and a huge cliff jump at New Chums Beach. Music is a track I'm working on:

New Chums Beach
The walk to New Chums Beach (Wainuiototo Bay) from Whangapoua takes about 30 minutes each way. You need to walk across a stream and large boulders before a short track takes you across the headland to New Chums Beach. Voted as one of the top 20 beaches in the world in 2006 by the Observer. Make your own mind up!

New Chums Beach Lookout
The northeast-facing beach is accessible only by boat or via a 30-minute walk on a partly unformed track along the coast from the estuary at the northern end of Whangapoua Beach. New Chums Beach is flanked to the north by the 171 m tall Pukenui (photo taken from here) and to the southeast by the rocky Motuto Point rising to 85 m.
The hills behind the 1 km long idyllic white-sand beach are undeveloped and covered in native bush, adding to its unspoiled appeal. In 2006, New Chums Beach was named one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world by Britain's The Observer and highly rated by Lonely Planet and National Geographic.
