Driving safely across the New Forest National Park
The famous New Forest ponies have the road sense of a two-year-old child and have the right of way on New Forest roads. They roam free in the National Park as it's their grazing and activity which helps to shape the iconic New Forest landscape we know today. Sadly around 70 are killed by cars each year. The Head Agister has some useful tips for all drivers in the New Forest.
Bucklers Hard Historic Maritime Museum and Village, Beaulieu, New Forest, Hampshire, England. ( 3 )
Bucklers Hard is a hamlet situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River in the English county of Hampshire. With its Georgian cottages running down to the river, Bucklers Hard is part of the 9,000 acres ( 36 km2 ) Beaulieu Estate. The hamlet is located some 21⁄2 miles ( 4.0 km ) south of the village of Beaulieu. The hamlet, originally called Montagu Town, was built by the second Duke of Montagu, and was intended to be a free port for trade with the West Indies.
Bucklers Hard was the birthplace of many British naval vessels, including many of Admiral Nelson's fleet, using the timber of the New Forest. The Hard, under the control of Master shipbuilder Henry Adams was responsible for building many famous ships during the late 18th century and early 19th centuries. These included HMS Euryalus, HMS Swiftsure and HMS Agamemnon, all of which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The industry declined in the nineteenth-century and today the hamlet is given over to tourism, with a small maritime museum, and a modern yachting marina. During World War II, the village was used to build motor torpedo boats and the river was a base for hundreds of landing craft for the Normandy invasion, Operation Overlord. Bucklers Hard was where Sir Francis Chichester began and finished his single-handed voyage around the world in Gipsy Moth IV.
Discover the fascinating story of Montagu Town as it was originally known. Founded as a free port for the trading of sugar from the West Indies, the newly re-designed Maritime Museum tells why the ambitious plans for a new town were never realised and why its name changed to Buckler’s Hard. Learn about the machine gun that fired round and square bullets and see characters from the village at the time of Henry Adams, the Master Shipbuilder who lived and worked at Buckler's Hard. Buckler’s Hard developed as a thriving shipbuilding village where warships for Nelson’s Navy were built, three of which took part in the Battle of Trafalgar. See models of these ships including HMS Euryalus on which the dispatch was written containing the news of the great victory and of Nelson’s death. View Nelson memorabilia including his baby clothes, made for him by the citizens of his birthplace, Burnham Thorpe, in Norfolk.
In more recent times, the village played a significant role in the D-Day landings. Learn about the activity on the river during the years of WWII, the building of segments of the Mulberry Harbour, which were towed across to the Normandy coast in preparation for D-Day, and the many hundreds of landing craft that sailed from the Beaulieu River to support the Normandy landings. A film presentation tells the story of Buckler’s Hard at war.
Admission price includes entrance to the Maritime Museum and Buckler’s Hard Story and all day car parking.

A ROAD TRIP TO THE NEW FOREST (AD)
Recently I hopped in the Mazda MX-5 and went on a beautiful road trip through the New Forest.
I'd heard so many great things about places like Beaulieu and Brockenhurst that I wanted to check them out for myself, so I thought it'd be the perfect place for my next Mazda road trip.
Also, I really wanted to see the wild ponies and horses - and yes, they really are everywhere here!
Just a couple of hours from London, I found the New Forest such an amazing place to drive around and the views really are this beautiful!

New Forest, in Hampshire, England Hatchet Pond near Beaulieu ( 1 )
The New Forest National Park lies within the county of Hampshire, on the south-central coast of England, and is Britain's smallest National Park. Some typical New Forest National Park scenes The Park is predominantly occupied by an area called the New Forest, about 150 square miles in size and once a royal hunting ground for King William I and his noblemen, in the 12th century AD.
The New Forest is an area of southern England which includes one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heath land and forest in the heavily-populated south east of England. It covers south-west Hampshire and extends into south-east Wiltshire and towards east Dorset. The name also refers to the New Forest National Park which has similar boundaries. Additionally the New Forest local government district is a subdivision of Hampshire which covers most of the Forest, and some nearby areas although it is no longer the planning authority for the National Park. There are many villages dotted around the area, and several small towns in the Forest and around its edges.
Like much of England, the site of the New Forest was once deciduous woodland, re colonised by birch and eventually beech and oak following the withdrawal of the ice sheets starting around 12,000 years ago. Some areas were cleared for cultivation from the Bronze Age onwards; the poor quality of the soil in the New Forest meant that the cleared areas turned into heath land waste, which may have been used even then as grazing land for horse's. There was still a significant amount of woodland in this part of Britain, but this was gradually reduced, particularly towards the end of the Middle Iron Age around 250--100 BC, and the 12th and 13th centuries, and of this all that remains today is the New Forest.
There are around 250 round barrows within its boundaries, and scattered boiling mounds, and it also includes about 150 scheduled ancient monuments. One such barrow in particular may represent the only known inhumation burial of the Early Iron Age and the only known Hallstatt burial in Britain; unfortunately, the acidity of the soil means that bone very rarely survives.
Barton-on-Sea There is a good safe beach in this seaside village, which has outstanding views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.
Beaulieu Slow down for donkeys and ponies strolling around the narrow streets of this ancient village, best known for the National Motor Museum and Palace House, home to the Montagu family. The village, with tiny shops and a pub, is built around a wide tidal river, attracting all kinds of wildlife.
Buckler's Hard The 18th century maritime village of Buckler's Hard sits on the western bank of the Beaulieu River, a couple of miles south of Beaulieu village, and is a pleasant place to rest a couple of hours while learning about the important role that Buckler's Hard played in Britain's shipbuilding history. Boldre Small pretty village near Lymington with narrow lanes and a well-preserved 800 year old church.
Bramshaw Piper's Wait, the highest point in The New Forest is near Bramshaw. In the village, visitors can enjoy the church, built over the centuries in a variety of architectural styles.
Brockenhurst There is a busy railway station here, the main bus/train interchange in The New Forest. The village itself is peaceful with a pretty green often full of grazing ponies and cattle. Many of the main walks and cycle trails through The New Forest start in Brockenhurst, which is set in some of the loveliest scenery in the district.
New Forest England, Why we enjoyed at Hythe Marina Village in New Forest, England
New Forest England, Why we enjoyed at Hythe Marina Village in New Forest, England. Hythe Marina village is located in New Forest, Hampshire, England. It is one of the first marina villages to be built in the UK and is still one of the finest. It is located on Southampton Water's western shore with w development of 206 berth marina.
The word Hythe or Hithe is an Old English word meaning haven or landing place. Hythe has a small shopping street where there are independent shops, charity shops, a library and a supermarket. The Marina is a place to relax, enjoy the day and chat with your loved ones. It can be a day's picnic for a family. There is a paid car park near the marina and the restaurant. It's a very beautiful place and lots of activities to do in Hythe and also in the surrounding areas.
