Corfu Town, New Fortress overview video
Corfu Town: New Fortress seen from Spilia Square.
Spilia: this means 'cave', and is the name given to the area around the old port and to its south, derived from the cave to be found at the entrance to the New Fortress. Here, in early Christian times, two stone icons of the Virgin Mary were found, one of which was placed in the Cathedral and the other left in situ. It now rests in the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Spiliotissa, which was built to house it.
Spilia Square offers а view tо the New Fortress. Directly ahead is the Spilia Gate, one the two remaining gates of four that used to give entry into the Venetian town. In this square can be seen Port Authority and Courthouse buildings.
Corfu Town Old Fortress
Corfu's Old Venetian Fortress.
It was originally designed to defend Corfu Town which was centred on the promontory and had previous Byzantine defences which the Venetians replaced with far stronger battlements and crucially an artificial moat the Contrafossa which you now cross to reach the fort from the open area of the Spianada.
Within the fort are the twin peaks that gave Corfu its' name Coryphe from the Greek.
It survived sieges by the Ottomans in 1537, 1571 and together with the new fortress in 1716. Whilst this protected Corfu town the rest of Corfu island was over run by the Ottomans who killed or enslaved up to 20,000 corfiots in the 1537 invasion.
Whilst it was during the Venetian occupation that the fortress was constructed and at the time housed residential properties for the military, political elite and aristocrats what you now see are from the British period including the church and the barracks. It is visited by many thousands of visitors each year and as a venue is used for concerts and exhibitions; particularly in the summer months and is home to part of the Ionian Academy.
New Fortress, Corfu
This Venetian fortress (Fortezza Nuova ) was built between 1570 and 1580 on the hill of St. Mark in Corfu. The main architect was Francisco Vitelli, who demolished thousands of houses, churches, and one of Corfu's most beautiful gates (Porto Reale) for the required building materials.

The Old Fortress (Corfu Town)
Corfu is a stunning island to experience either alone or with friends. Outdoor activities, sights and attractions are a must during your stay on the island, and as everything is very compact, you can easily switch from one picturesque place to another. Corfu is a must-see destination, and should already be high up on your bucket list for outdoor memories to remember!
The Old Fortress can be seen from the Liston and was built here to protect the town from invasions from sea. It is thought the earliest fortifications on the site date from the 6th century after the Gothic invasion and the medieval town of Corfu developed within the boundaries of the peninsula. In the early 15th century the Venetians started replacing the old Byzantine fortifications.
The fort successfully repulsed three major Ottoman sieges, the great siege of 1537, the siege of 1571 and the second great siege of Corfu in 1716. Following the siege in 1537 the Venetian Governor ordered the construction of new bastions and towers which still exist today. They were designed by two Venetian military engineers Savorgnan and Martinengo and were considered masterpieces of military engineering.
To further strengthen the defences the moat was added by the Venetians and is called Contrafossa, access to the fortress was by a drawbridge but has now been replaced with a permanent structure. The two twin peaks within the castle are called Castel a Terra and Castel a Mare and are visible just above the Contrafossa, both peaks were fortified by strong towers.
The Castel da Mare peak housed the powder magazine and was struck by lightning in 1718. The explosion destroyed three secondary ammunition facilities and also destroyed most of the buildings inside the castle including the palace of the Captain General.
Both the old and new fortresses had Governors who were elected by the Venetian senate and were appointed for a period of two years. As part of their oath to the senate they had to agree not to communicate with each other in order to ensure neither would persuade the other to commit treason against the republic.
During World War Two the Fortress was used by the Nazis to imprison Jews prior to their deportation. On 8 June 1944 the Jews of Corfu were told to be present at the fortress, some hid in the hills but most turned up as ordered. They were then imprisoned in harsh conditions with no facilities before they were transported across Europe to the Birkenau camp. Of the 1,800 Corfiot Jews who were deported 120 eventually returned after the war.
Today the Fortress houses the Public library of Corfu which is located in the old British barracks and also plays host to various exhibitions and concerts, there is also a Cafe within the grounds.

The New Fortress of Corfu - Kerkyra ✔
➤The New Fortress of Corfu (Greek: Νέο Φρούριο, Venetian: Fortezza Nuova) is a Venetian fortress built on the hill of St. Mark in Corfu in stages. The original architect of the fort was the military engineer Ferrante Vitelli. The current buildings which exist within the fortress were built by the British during their rule of the island (1815–63).
At the top of the castle there is a stone building which was used for defence and a brick building which in modern times functions as the headquarters of the Naval Station of Corfu. The Venetian fortifications were later expanded by the British and the French to help defend against a possible Turkish attack. Its fortifications included 700 pieces of artillery with range estimated as far as the Albanian coast.

Old Fortress in Corfu Town - Fortezza Vecchia Corfù Città
The Old Fortress of Corfu is a Venetian fortress in the city of Corfu. The fortress covers the promontory which initially contained the old town of Corfu that had emerged during Byzantine times. Before the Venetian era the promontory, which lies between the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North and Garitsa Bay to the south, was defended by Byzantine fortifications which the Venetians largely replaced with fortifications of their own design. As part of their defensive plans the Venetians separated the promontory from the rest of the city of Corfu by creating the Contrafossa, a moat which is a sea channel connecting the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North with the Bay of Garitsa to the South, converting the citadel into an artificial island. The fort successfully repulsed all three major Ottoman sieges: the great siege of 1537, the siege of 1571 and the second great siege of Corfu in 1716. Today, the Fortress houses the Public library of Corfu which is located in the old British barracks. The fortress grounds are also used for various types of art and culture exhibits. The Hellenic Music Research Lab of the Ionian University is also located at the Old Fortress.
