WINTER OLYMPICS 1948 ST. MORITZ SWITZERLAND 79914
Written and directed by Hanz Thorner, this reel provides comprehensive coverage of the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1948. Many events staged at St. Moritz are covered in the film, including the Ladies Special Slalom, (00:00:50:00) figure skating, (00:04:18:00) ski jumping, (00:09:00:00) the 50 km. cross country race, (00:13:40:00) and a thrilling speed skating race. (00:17:30:00). Six cameras were used in the production to catch the champions of 30 nations in action. The film also highlights the queen of the ice, Barbara Anne Scott, (00:11:50:00) records back-stage victory celebrations, training sessions, and a variety of other highlights. Camera close-ups captured Olympian champions Barbara Anne Scott and Dick Buttons, queen and king of the ice, women’s Slalom champion Gretchen Fraser from Vancouver, and Edy Reinhalter from Switzerland.
Born in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, Hanz Thorner moved to the United States in 1932. One of the first certified ski instructors in the United States, Thorner operated ski schools across the country, including at the Glen House in Pinkham Notch, Lake Placid, and Mt. Rainer. Settling down in New Hampshire, Thorner opened The Thorner House in Franconia for the 1940-41 season. After spending time looking for an ideal ski area, Thorner decided to build Magic Mountain on private property in Londonderry, Vermont, with the goal of having the area “more Swiss than a Swiss watch.”
Opening for the 1960-61 season, the area was to be a ski-in, ski-out resort with plenty of activities. A village was developed at the base of the mountain, featuring hotels and bars. The challenging trails of the ski area had colorful names matching the Magic theme of the mountain. Thorner was known for doing things differently than others in New England, such as importing Swiss ski instructors and having Magic's slopes mowed by sheep during the off season.
Thorner sold Magic Mountain in 1985. He died in December of 2003 at the age of 95.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:

- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! SUMMARY
=======
Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, (12 June 1897 – 14 January 1977) was a British Conservative politician who served three periods as Foreign Secretary and then a relatively brief term as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957.
Achieving rapid promotion as a young Member of Parliament, he became Foreign Secretary aged 38, before resigning in protest at Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy towards Mussolini's Italy. He again held that position for most of the Second World War, and a third time in the early 1950s. Having been deputy to Winston Churchill for almost 15 years, he succeeded him as the Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister in April 1955, and a month later won a general election.
Eden's worldwide reputation as an opponent of appeasement, a man of peace, and a skilled diplomat was overshadowed in 1956 when the United States refused to support the Anglo-French military response to the Suez Crisis, which critics across party lines regarded as an historic setback for British foreign policy, signalling the end of British predominance in the Middle East. Most historians argue that he made a series of blunders, especially not realising the depth of American opposition to military action. Two months after ordering an end to the Suez operation, he resigned as Prime Minister on grounds of ill health and because he was widely suspected of having misled the House of Commons over the degree of collusion with France and Israel.Eden is generally ranked among the least successful British prime ministers of the 20th century, although two broadly sympathetic biographies (in 1986 and 2003) have gone some way to shifting the balance of opinion. Biographer D. R. Thorpe described the Suez Crisis as a truly tragic end to his premiership, and one that came to assume a disproportionate importance in any assessment of his career.
Maine
Maine (/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south; New Hampshire to the west; and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.
