In the Spirits
If prohibition laws were still enforced, a Michigan State University professor would be Michigan's public enemy number one.
Kris Berglund, MSU University Distinguished Professor of food science and chemical engineering, led legislation to allow distillers to sell their product on site, brought new distillers to the state and launched new courses to fuel the workforce for an industry that adds more than $400 million to Michigan's economy, comprising nearly 25 distilleries and about 1,400 new jobs.

Renewable energy storage at MSU’s Bioeconomy Institute
Finding more efficient ways to harness and store renewable energy is the goal of the Michigan State University Bioeconomy Institute in Holland, Michigan. Spartan researchers are creating a cheaper and more durable version of a redox flow battery, which can store energy from the sun and wind. Currently in the prototypephase, the device could one day open the door to large-scale operations and home usage, bringing down energy costs. Tom Guarr is an MSU researcher and director of research and development at the Organic Energy Storage Laboratory at the MSU Bioeconomy Institute.
This story was part of The Great State Road Trip, a first-hand look at MSU’s impact across Michigan. Tour the digital scrapbook at
Michigan State University has been advancing the common good with uncommon will for more than 160 years. One of the top research universities in the world, MSU pushes the boundaries of discovery and forges enduring partnerships to solve the most pressing global challenges while providing life-changing opportunities to a diverse and inclusive academic community through more than 200 programs of study in 17 degree-granting colleges.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Grand River about 25 miles east of Lake Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 188,040. In 2010, the Grand Rapids metropolitan area had a population of 1,005,648, and the combined statistical area of Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland had a population of 1,321,557. Grand Rapids is the county seat of Kent County, Michigan, second largest city in Michigan (after Detroit), and the largest city in West Michigan. A historic furniture-manufacturing center, Grand Rapids is still home to five of the world's leading office furniture companies, and is nicknamed Furniture City. Its more common modern nickname of River City refers to the landmark river for which it was named. The city and surrounding communities are economically diverse, and contribute heavily to the health care, information technology, automotive, aviation, and consumer goods manufacturing industries, among others.
Grand Rapids was the home of The First Family of U.S, Boxing: Floyd Sr., Jr., Jeff, and Roger Mayweather, World Championship Boxer James Toney, singer and song writer Anthony Kiedis, the filmmakers Paul Schrader and Leonard Schrader, the singer Al Green and U.S. President Gerald Ford, who—along with his wife Betty—is buried on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids.

3: Theory and Practice of Freedom of Expression
One of the thorniest faces of free speech debate is the tension between free expression as an abstract principle and kinds of speech that harm, such as hate speech, incitements to violence, or uses of information which can cause economic damage or threaten security or privacy. And technologies change how information can move, and harm. This week we put a historian of the earliest post-printing-press debates over free speech in dialog with a historian of the information practices of hate groups in America.

How Cruise Lines Promote New Ships And Get Rid Of Old Ships
How Cruise Lines Promote New Ships And Get Rid Of Old Ships Cruise ships get old just like we do and they either get refurbished or move on to secondary cruise lines. The big name cruise lines do not like to operate cruise ships that look old or continually break down. Plus they like to be known as cruise trend setters to their travellers. It is not uncommon for a cruse ship to have up to 4 or 5 owners in a 40 year time span.
Thinking about going on a cruise? Here are a few items to get for the perfect cruise:
Perfect Cruise Ship Power Strip
Towel Clips for pool deck
Packing Cube Set
Waterproof Cell Phone Case

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?

This panel will also raise awareness about the many sustainably driven conservation efforts being made by organizations protecting the greatest source of liquid fresh water on the planet, The Great Lakes.
Krystyn Tully, co-founder of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper will also be attending and will be talking about “What it takes to keep your favourite waterbody swimmable, drinkable, fishable”.
Chris LeConte, Principal of Smart Watering Systems, will be speaking on The reduction of potable water on landscapes; facilitating a shift towards storm water management and rainwater collection/re-use.
