Battlefields: Belgium: Ypres and Tyne Cot Cemetery
Having crossed over into Belgium to visit Ypres we travel onto Tyne Cot Cemetery where the Battle of Passchendaele took place before going back through France again on the way home.
Jenny's Grandad's WW1 History | Tyne Cot Cemetery | Euro Trip 2018 Pt19
Jenny visits the monument to The Hertfordshire Regiment, and talks about her Grandad's World War 1 history. We follow on with a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth Graves Commission site in the world.
Charles Chapman (1892-1965)
I have been investigating for ages where my Grandad was captured during WW1. He was a private in the Hertfordshire Regiment and joined in 1915.
Last year I discovered he was wounded and captured at The Third Battle of Ypres/Ieper on 31st July 1917 when nearly 75% of the other ranks were either killed, wounded or captured. 132 were missing of which one was my grandad Charles Chapman.
I have now found the German records (trying to translate some of the words) but what we have found is:
1. He was wounded and captured near Ypres/Ieper on 31st July 1917.
2. He was taken to a military hospital in Roesalare (Roulers) Belgium as he had a shrapnel wound in his left leg (can confirm he still suffered from that when I knew him).
3. He was taken to a POW camp in LIMBURG in November 1917.
Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front. It is the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world, for any war. The cemetery and its surrounding memorial are located outside of Passchendale, near Zonnebeke in Belgium.
The name Tyne Cot is said to come from the Northumberland Fusiliers, seeing a resemblance between the many German concrete pill boxes on this site and typical Tyneside workers' cottages (Tyne cots). (Wikipedia)

10 november 2013: Crest Farm - Passendale -- Zonnebeke
Crest Farm Canadian Memorial
This monument commemorates the commitment of the Canadian Corps which during the Third Ypres suffered heavy losses here, but eventually managed to take Passendale church though. Crest Farm is situated on high ground, offering an excellent view over the battlefield. Passendale church is barely 700 metres off. However, it took the Canadian troops almost 10 days to get that far. The road between the monument and the church is called Canadalaan. It was laid in the fifties.
On November 10, 1917...... finally it happened. The Entente troops captured Passchendaele and chased the Germans out the village. Since July 31, 191 , the British fought with the Canadians, ANZACS and many other units, to capture Passchendaele and push back the Germans behind. This was the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as the Battle of Passchendaele. The battle was not smooth. Due to the massive shelling, rivers were destroyed and the heavy rain that followed made the situation not well. The battlefield was a big swamp. Trenches were underwater, let alone the shelters underground (dugouts) that had to be continuously pumped. The battle resulted in more than 500,000 casualties! Each year, the end of the Battle of Passchendaele is commemorated at the Crest Farm Canadian Memorial. The monument stands on a hill where once stood a farm called Crest Farm. It was behind one of Germany's main lines, the Flandern 2 Stellung. The monument commemorates the heavy losses of the Canadian Army during the 700 meter long march during the Battle of Passchendaele. Yet this march took ten days before the 6th Battalion of the 2nd Canadian Division reach the St. Audomaruschurch of Passchendaele. The commemoration contained as usual a holy mass celebration, a torchlight towards Passchendaele and much more. Every year, four stories of soldiers have be shared. This year there were only three soldiers who fought during the battle. The fourth person was Harold Harry Vormezeele, an adjutant of Belgian origin who was killed near Tessalit in Mali during his service with the French Foreign Legion .

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, near Poperinge, Belgium
Video of the Lijssenthoek Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery near Poperinge. CWGC says
During the First World War, the village of Lijssenthoek was situated on the main communication line between the Allied military bases in the rear and the Ypres battlefields. Close to the Front, but out of the extreme range of most German field artillery, it became a natural place to establish casualty clearing stations. The cemetery was first used by the French 15th Hopital D'Evacuation and in June 1915, it began to be used by casualty clearing stations of the Commonwealth forces.
From April to August 1918, the casualty clearing stations fell back before the German advance and field ambulances (including a French ambulance) took their places.
The cemetery contains 9,901 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 24 being unidentified. There are 883 war graves of other nationalities, mostly French and German, 11 of these are unidentified. There is 1 Non World War burial here.
The only concentration burials were 24 added to Plot XXXI in 1920 from isolated positions near Poperinghe and 17 added to Plot XXXII from St. Denijs Churchyard in 1981.
Eight of the headstones are Special Memorials to men known to be buried in this cemetery, these are located together alongside Plot 32 near the Stone of Remembrance.
The cemetery, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, is the second largest Commonwealth cemetery in Belgium.
