Venice Island of Murano and Glass Making Glass Blowing Demonstration
Please join me on this visit to the island of Murano, famous for glass making. Murano is a short hop from Venice, only about 15 minutes by boat. We booked a tour through Viator; the tour guide explained much of the history and the geography of both Venice and Murano on the way. Once we got to Murano we were treated to a glass making demonstration by a master glassmaker. After the demonstration we toured the gallery, then we were off to the island of Burano (my next video)! Thank you for watching!

Murano is famous for its glass making. Murano glass is still associated with Venetian glass. The process of making Murano glass is rather complex. The glass is made from silica, which becomes liquid at high temperatures.
As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is when the glass-master can shape the material.

Glassmaking on the Island of Murano near Venice, Italy
March 2011. A glass worker with 45 years of experience demonstrates some of his skills at the glass factory Ferro & Lazzarini Fornace on the Island of Murano near Venice, Italy. Glass workers have been carrying on Venetian glass formulas and glassblowing techniques on the island since 1291.
Murano Glass Chandelier Blowing In The Artisan Workshop in Venice, Italy
Making chandeliers is one of the oldest Murano Glass specialties, and one that propelled Murano Glass industry to worldwide fame in the 17th century. Having discovered a secret to making glass of exceptional translucency and clarity, and combining this knowledge with their skills honed by centuries of work in family workshops, Murano artisans started crafting chandeliers of incredible beauty and elegance. Venetian Chandeliers became the most coveted piece of interior design, sought after by the rich merchants, nobility, and royalty throughout Europe and beyond. Many wealthy Venetian residents took up the trend and started hanging these new chandeliers with multi-tier designs and lots of floral decorative elements in their grand ballrooms, palazzo entrances, and other imposing spaces. The Murano Glass masters were striving to outdo each other in elaborateness of designs and richness of decor, creating fertile ground for the evolution of craftsmanship and design of Murano chandeliers.
Even though times have changed and fashions evolved, Murano Glass chandeliers remains an indisputable statement of impeccable taste and still represents the very best in interior design and lighting. People continue to admire these functional works of art, and some of the most extraordinary and luxurious residences, hotels, and retail spaces in the world today boast fine handcrafted Murano Glass Chandeliers, Sconces, Floor Lamps, and other Venetian lighting pieces. This is not just a testament to the tradition that dates back over 300 years, but an evidence that Murano Glass artistic tradition is alive and well and knows no equals.
MURANO - BURANO AND EMERGENCY PIZZA! - ITALY 2016!
FINALLY! I am ready to venture through a city that has captivated my imagination since before I can remember. VENICE! I woke up very excited to get going with the day but first tragedy struck...kind of. I was offloading pictures/video from camera and phone and some how deleted everything. Surprisingly I didn't have a mental breakdown, I just accepted it --- and then thought of data recovery software. My day had been saved.
Once that disaster was averted, I got going to Venice proper and decided to go to the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for its blown glass galleries and factories. The art that they made on that island was simply stunning. Burano on the other hand is famous for its endless amount of colourful buildings. Every one of them is one neon colour or another. It was a beautiful, colourful and very positive place to spend a day of adventuring.
After that myself and two ladies ended the day with being confused by the Venice vaporetto(water bus) lines. Essentially we had to get off at a station, we didn't get off at it because we thought ours was the next one and it wasn't. Then we missed the next boat because we thought we didn't need that one but we did. All in it wasn't frustrating it was just an annoying thing to deal with. However, it was a beautiful day that I wasn't going to let be spoiled by a little bump.
I also got emergency pizza to end the day on a high note! Enjoy!
VENICE, ITALY: VIDEO GUIDE THROUGH THE CITY OF THE CANALS, THE CARNIVAL, MURANO AND WHAT TO DO [1/2]
VENICE HAS BEEN THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF THE ADRIATIC SEA FOR MORE THAN 1.000 YEARS, THANKS TO ITS ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE VENICE IS UNIVERSALLY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES NOT ONLY IN ITALY BUT IN THE WORLD! SINCE 1987 IT IS PART OF THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE AND THE VENICE COLOURFUL CARNIVAL IS WELL-KNOWN WORLWIDE.
THE HISTORICAL VENICE RISES IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAGOON, ON 121 ISLANDS, SEPARATED BY 177 CANALS, CONNECTED BY 436 BRIDGES. HEART OF THE OLD TOWN OF VENICE IS SAINT MARK’S SQUARE. THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARK HAS BEEN OVERLOOKING THE SQUARE FOR ALMOST 1.000 YEARS. IT IS GOLD-PLATED AND HAS BEAUTIFUL MOSAICS THAT TELL THE STORY OF VENICE.
FROM THE TERRACE OF THE MUSEUM OF SAINT MARK’S CATHEDRAL YOU HAVE AN AMAZING VIEW OVER SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND VENICE DOGE’S PALACE, AN INTERESTING MUSEUM WITH MANY WORKS BY THE BEST VENETIAN ARTISTS.
FROM THE PRISONS OF VENICE DOGE’S PALACE A NARROW HALLWAY LEADS TO THE WELL-KNOWN BRIDGE OF SIGHS, WHOSE NAME REFERS TO THE SIGH OF THE PRISONERS LOOKING OUT AT THE VENETIAN LAGOON FOR THE LAST TIME, BEFORE THEY WENT TO JAIL.
SAINT MARK’S BELL TOWER OVERLOOKS THE MAIN SQUARE OF VENICE, IT’S ONE OF THE TALLEST BELL TOWER IN ITALY! FROM UP THERE THE PANORAMA OF VENICE AND ITS LAGOON IS ASTONISHING!
THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE IS POPULAR WORLDWIDE, IT’S A GIGANTIC FEAST RUNNING OVER A THOUSAND YEARS THROUGH THE STREETS AND SQUARES OF VENICE, WITH MANY SHOWS, CARNIVAL MASKS AND ANY KIND OF EVENT AND PERFOMANCE ANYTIME! PEOPLE SWARM SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND THE SURROUNDINGS STREETS TO ATTEND THE CARNIVAL PARADE. A HEART-FELT MOMENT FOR THE VENETIANS IS THE SO CALLED “SVOLO DEL LEON”, THE FLIGHT OF THE LION. A HUGE CLOTH REPRESENTING A WINGED LION, THE ICON OF VENICE, IS FLAPPED OVER THE SQUARE. PEOPLE DANCE, THERE ARE THEATRICAL PIECES ON THE STREETS, CONCERTS, AND THE CELEBRATION GOES ON BEYOND THE SUNSET IN THE MANY VENETIAN BUILDINGS WERE THERE ARE PRIVATE PARTIES AND MASKED BALLS!
THERE’S A BUSINESS THAT HAVE MADE VENICE POPULAR WORLDWIDE, THE BUSINESS OF THE GLASS ARTWORKS. NOWADAYS MURANO IS EQUIVALENT AND A GUARANTEE OF HIGH QUALITY GLASS PRODUCTS. THE FAME OF MURANO ROSE BECAUSE THE OLD TOWN OF VENICE NEEDED TO BE PROTECTED, SINCE THE FURNACES OF THE GLASS FACTORIES OFTEN CAUSED HUGE FIRES. BESIDES, THE ANCIENT REPUBLIC OF VENICE GATHERED THE FACTORIES IN MURANO TO BETTER PRESERVE AND CONTROL A BUSINESS THAT MADE VENICE POPULAR WORLDWIDE. WALKING DOWN THE STREETS OF MURANO YOU CAN FIND A LOT OF GLASS WORKSHOPS WHERE YOU CAN HAVE A GUIDED TOUR AND SEE HOW THEY CREATE GLASS ARTWORKS.
VENICE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST REFINED CITIES IN EUROPE FOR CENTURIES. DURING THE XVIII CENTURY VENICE IS MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT CITY IN THE WORLD FROM AN ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE. JUST THINK ABOUT PAOLO VERONESE, PAOLO VENEZIANO, TINTORETTO, TIZIANO, LORENZO LOTTO - JUST TO MENTION FEW... HERE IN VENICE A SCHOOL OF PAINTERS WAS BORN IN THE 17TH CENTURY, THE PAINTERS OF THE GENRE OF LANDSCAPE. AND ESPECIALLY A PAINTER FROM VENICE EMERGED: CANALETTO. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE IS THE CRUCIAL ELEMENT OF A PAINTING, AND NOT JUST A BACKGROUND OF THE HUMAN ACTION OR THE BACKGROUND OF A RELIGIOUS THEME PAINTING. AND THEREFORE THE LANDSCAPE BEGAN TO GAIN MORE AND MORE ATTENTION, AND THE PAINTERS STARTED TO TRAVEL TO DISCOVER MORE INTERESTING LANDSCAPES. A JOURNEY BEGAN TO BE CONSIDERED AS AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THE TREND OF THE GRAND TOUR BEGAN TO SPREAD. THE GRAND TOUR WAS THE JOURNEY THAT FROM THE 17TH CENTURY ON, EVERY EUROPEAN RICH DESCENDANT HAD TO DO IN ORDER TO COMPLETE HIS EDUCATION AND IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED A MAN. (BY THE WAY THE WORD “TOURISM” COMES FROM THE GRAND TOUR AND VENICE WAS A CRUCIAL STOP-OVER ON THE GRAND TOUR).
MANY BOOKS ABOUT THE GRAND TOUR WERE WRITTEN, BOOKS THAT YEARS LATER WILL BE CONSIDERED AS THE FIRST TOURIST GUIDES.
LOTS OF MASTERS OF LITERATURE WROTE ABOUT VENICE: STENDHAL, LORD BYRON, PROUST, GOETHE, MANN, D'ANNUNZIO, PIRANDELLO, DOSTOEVSKIJ, HEMINGWAY... THE POINT IS THAT FROM THAT MOMENT ON ARTISTS BEGAN TO DOCUMENT THEIR JOURNEYS AND SO WE CAN SPEAK ABOUT THE FIRST TRAVEL DOCUMENTARIES.
IF YOU ARE FOND OF ART AND WANT TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE STORY OF VENICE THE MUSEUM OF CA’ REZZONICO IS THE RIGHT PLACE! OTHER MUSEUMS YOU CANNOT MISS ARE THE CORRER MUSEUM, THE ACCADEMIA GALLERY OF VENICE AND THE VENETIAN SEAT OF THE PEGGY GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM.

Air BNB is one of my most favorite ways to travel and experience the world. You get to stay at abeautiful house/ apartment and live just like the locals do. It’s very convenient for families as well. If you haven’t tried it yet, here’s a link to the website, you’ll get 41 $ free to use for your first stay. Enjoy
--------------------------------------------------------
How to get to Murano Burano & Torcello:
Murano- Line 4.1 or 4.2 , depends on your departure station (in Venice, the line is called 4 and the ½ represent the direction. Check the sign at your station to see where you’re headed). If you’re at san mark’s square take 4.1- it’s a 35 min ride to Murano. If you can, walk to F.T. Nova station, it will shorten the ride to 10 min.
Burano and Torcello- line 12, departure from F.T Nova station or Colona station (if you’re at Murano and want to continue from there).
--------
Tips and attractions:
* Murano- glass island, your MUST DO in this location is see a live glass blowing demonstrations in one of the factories. For those of you who come on a touristy period, pre order your demonstration and tour here:
* If you have time and you feel comfortable using public transportation, I’d recommend dedication a day to the islands and then head back to Venice for dinner. But in case you’re short on time but want to see as much as possible, take a tour with a boat and guide. You’ll get to see all 3 islands and your guide will give you some interesting insights while riding the boat. Info here:
* Gondola (!!!!!!!!!!!!woohoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!):
I’ve mentioned (in the video on public transport) that a 30 min ride costs 80 euros which is correct. But I’ve found a good deal for people who don’t want to share a boat with other tourists and want to pay less than 80. Check the link, the prices there is for each person. So if you’re a couple or 3 people it will actually be less than 80! You’re welcome:
