South Africa Adventure: Cape Town and Stellenbosch - Pilot Lindy VLOG #60
// CAPE TOWN & STELLENBOSCH - A helicopter flight over the Cape Peninsula, visiting Penguins in Boulders Beach, riding horses near giraffes and zebras in Stellenbosch: An AMAZING START of our holidays in South Africa!
A lifelong dream came true: We visited South Africa! We were there for 12 days and really made the most out of it!! This video is the first of the three South Africa VLOGs that I made and is all about our first 4 days in South Africa.
DAY 1: Arrived to Cape Town, visited the Table Mountain (but the cableway was closed) and drove to Signal Hill (near Lion's Head) to relax and watch the sunset.
DAY 2: We woke up in our bed&breakfast in Woodstock district and walked to the Old Biscuit Mill where on Saturdays there is a market. We had breakfast there and did some shopping! We then took the car to the V&A waterfront, walked to Bo-Kaap to see the colourful houses and when back at the waterfront, the helicopter was waiting for us to take us on a 25-minute flight over the Cape Peninsula and around the Table Mountain. We saw the twelve apostles from the air! We then relaxed the rest of the day in Cape Town.
DAY 3: A rainy day in Cape Town, but regardless of the weather we got in the car to visit the Cape Peninsula as planned. We took the Chapman Peak Drive, which because of the weather wasn't as spectacular as it should have been! But arriving to Simon's Town and spotting the first penguins at Boulders Beach, really made our day! After seeing hundreds of penguins with their babies, we continued our trip to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. Spectacular! On the way back, we took the Chapman Peak Drive again, during sunset. The view was AMAZING!
DAY 4: We left our bed&breakfast and drove in one hour to Stellenbosch. We went horse riding through a sanctuary and saw many springboks, zebra's and even giraffes very close to us! Our guide said that it was the first time that mommy-giraffe let us be so close to her newborn!! When leaving the sanctuary, we passed on the horse through the vineyards and finished with a nice wine tasting, as Stellenbosch is famous for the wine! We had planned to stay in Stellenbosch the rest of the day, but there was one thing we felt we still really had to do: Go to the top of the Table Mountain! So we drove back to Cape Town and the cableway was open! We were very very happy to have seen the view from up there! After sunset we drove back to Stellenbosch to have some good rest for the next day.
Our South Africa adventure will continue through the Garden Route, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma National Park, Port Elizabeth and Addo Elephant National Park, but all of that you will see in the next VLOG!
Thank you for watching and I can't wait to show you part two of this awesome South African Adventure!
Enjoy watching!!

SOUTH AFRICA: CAPE TOWN BOMB BLAST LATEST SITUATION (5)
English/Nat
Cape Town's religious leaders have been paying their respects to the dead and injured of last night's Planet Hollywood bombing.
Eleven leaders laid wreaths outside the restaurant, at the city's waterfront complex, where a bomb killed one and injured twenty seven.
South African Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi says the bombing was probably linked to the U-S cruise-missile attacks.
Religious leaders showed a united front as they joined together to honour the victims of the Cape Town bombing.
Despite widespread suspicion that the bombing was perpetrated by Islamic extremists, both Islamic and Jewish leaders joined together in a show of solidarity.
The bombing has been linked to revenge attacks for America's bombing of Sudan and Afghanistan last week.
The American attacks were condemned by the Islamic community and it is felt that some extremists may be planning to attack American targets in retaliation.
After the Planet Hollywood bombing, many tourists are scared.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I understand some Americans have decided to cut short their stay here, cut their holiday short and in fact leave the area and try and get back on aircraft this evening.
SUPER CAPTION: Rick Taylor, C-E-O of Cape Town Tourism Board
The victims, many badly injured, are recovering in hospital. Some are able to recall what happened in the attack.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I was actually on my way to the toilet and so I just reaching the foyer when the bomb went off. I wasn't sure what had happened and then there was a lot of electrical shock as well and a lot of people lying on the floor. A lady next to me, her leg had been blown off. I'm lucky to have escaped with the comparatively minor injuries I have, to that some others have suffered
SUPER CAPTION: Ashley Eagon, British Patient
The South African authorities claim that they are on the verge of a breakthrough in the race to catch the bombers.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There are firm leads that have been followed and the firmness of the leads gives rise to this optimism that soon there will be a breakthrough.
SUPER CAPTION: Sydney Mufamadi, South Africa's Safety and Security Minister
The South African government says it has recently increased security at U-S offices and diplomatic installations but the restaurant may have been hit because it was a soft target.
F-B-I agents who have been investigating the blast in Nairobi were expected to arrive later on Wednesday.

After a four hour, four train journey to London Stansted, I got on a flight with my very good friends Rachel, Nathan, Dec and James. Seventeen hours of flight time later we were in Cape Town, South Africa and checking out our lovely apartment. A breakthrough discovery -- probably one of the biggest in the last few hundred years, may finally put to rest the question of whether aquatic humanoids, colloquially known as mermaids, really exist.

Hillcrest Wine Estate, Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa
Hillcrest Wine Estate, Durbanville, Cape Town from the sky. Footage taken with Phantom 3 Professional Camera Drone.
Hillcrest estate is just outside Durbanville in Cape Town, South Africa. Just like the rest of this area the estate is absolutely beautiful with vineyards and olive trees.
Here is some more info from their website:
Hillcrest Estate is a boutique winery, nestled in the Tygerberg Hills on the outskirts of Durbanville. Only a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, this unique estate offers visitors a host of activities, a much-loved restaurant, delicious olives and award winning wines.
It is the terroir of the farm's vineyards, cooled by afternoon sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it one of the prime growing grape regions in the Western Cape. The estate's well-drained soils have a good water retention capacity and are differentiated into Oakleaf, Hutton and Clovelly types which favour the production of good quality grapes and consequently great wines. In addition the vineyards are strewen with baked shale or “Hornfels”. This is a result of a geological event millions of years ago, which has imparted a distinct minerality to the wines and has lead to the name of our Flagship Bordeaux Blend.
Our vineyards are planted on Northwest facing slopes between 200 & 380 meters ASL. Hillcrest's undulating landscape offers a range of micro-climates which allows different grape varietals to be planted in the various suitable conditions to attain optimal quality. Thus Sauvignon Blanc which requires cool ripening conditions is planted on the higher slopes. The cooler conditions also extend the ripening period which favours the accumulation and concentration of typical sauvignon lime and passion fruit flavours. The five Bordeaux varietals are planted on lower slopes, with Cabernet Sauvignon & Petit Verdot planted on the lowest slopes . These are late ripeners which require warmer conditions to ensure that the grapes are optimally ripe at harvest. Various vineyard management techniques such as leaf plucking to increase sunlight penetration and green harvesting to attain uniform ripeness at harvest are practiced to improve grape quality.
Feel free to visit them next time you are in the area.

Cape Town exposed beyond the beaches (2019)
In the past calendar year, 308 murders were reported in the crime-infested Western Cape township of Nyanga, South Africa. This startling revelation is according to the 2017/18 national crime statistics.
For its latest short documentary film project, the media team at Jesuit Institute South Africa in collaboration with the Society of Jesus in South Africa (Jesuits), visited Nyanga for a week to shoot an 8-minute snapshot of daily life. This palisade-fenced area of the province encloses people as though they were caged zoo animals, a local Catholic priest said.
Cape Town exposed beyond the beaches (2019), reveals the despicable reality of the crime and desperation lived in Nyanga. In stark contrast to the Cape Town known to many — as a tourist’s paradise — we wanted to highlight the inequality and the multitude of problems faced by its people.
The fatalities in the township are numbing and, crudely understood, mean that a life is lost here almost every day of the year. This revelation alone should bring politicians and our national government to act definitely and with haste. Sadly, it appears little is being done. The latest statistics reveal an upward trend in criminal activity in the region of almost 10% — especially in sexually-related offences and murder.
In fact, Rampeoane Hlobo SJ, Jesuit parish priest at St Mary's, the local Catholic Church in Nyanga, confessed that if one tries to abide by the law, one may just end up being a victim and a crime statistic as well. The problem is not that people do not want to obey the law but that those who do not want to obey the law terrorise the rest of the community and there are no policing and law enforcement agencies to protect law-abiding community members who want the rule of law. Consequently, lawlessness flourishes and reigns.
Almost a quarter of those who live in Nyanga are between the ages of 15 and 24, making young people in the area perhaps the most susceptible to crime. In many cases, it is these very young people who are the perpetrators of such odious crimes, making it difficult to escape “the cycle of poverty, violence and death”, said Matsepane Morare SJ, the former Catholic priest at St Mary’s. But, Hlobo says, the Church becomes a necessary and indispensable haven, not least for its young community members. We find ourselves journeying in solidarity with the people of Nyanga, the murder capital of South Africa and giving hope to many, especially the young, he said.
But that’s not the whole story.
Beyond the blood-splatter and filth-lined streets, there is an incredible joy and a hope among those who live there. It was encouraging to see young children playing in the parks, albeit accompanied by their parents for fear that they may be kidnapped or enticed into a life of crime by local gang lords. Nyanga residents also braai openly on the streets, sharing their food generously with one another, amid township song and sips of the finest brew from the local shebeen.
The sense of community is undeniable. We met with a group of mothers at St Mary’s. They come together to support each other through the grief and pain of losing their children to gang violence. I beheld their sense of hope, even amid the turmoil and senseless violence. One student we interviewed at the Church said: “No one pays attention to us”, but her warm smile showed that she held no grudge or contempt.

South African Airways flight from South Africa to Germany travel vlog (Cape Town - Joburg - Munich) video transcript:
Well today is a travel day. What happened to our time in South Africa? Like it flew by.
Seriously. We've been here for 2 weeks and I still can't believe it. I feel like literally like we just got here.
Anyways, so we have a really long journey ahead of us. We are basically going to be traveling for a day and a half. Or two. Well first we're catching a taxi to the airport in Cape Town and then it it what a two hour flight to Joburg. A flight to Joburg. And then from Joburg we have an eleven hour flight to Munich in Germany and then we're going to arrive there and then we're going to have time to kill because we're going to be arriving early in the morning and we can't even check-in to our AirBNB until like mid-afternoon.
Then we're going to have to take a bus or a train to Nuremberg where we've rented an AirBNB. No, no no and then from the center of town we have to take another train because we're staying in the outskirts. Right so buckle up because we're going to show you the whole thing.
Two cups of Rooibos and a glass of Pinotage for Sam. The pinotage hasn't arrived yet but we are basically we're trying to get some of our favorite local things before we leave because we probably won't be able to have rooibos tea again for a while.
So our 1st of 2 flights with South African Airways. All aboard. All aboard. So Joburg and then we don't have that long of a wait and then yeah. Thankfully this is a short flight. The next one is going to be longer.
Wine o'clock. Even on the plane. Even on a short flight like this. That is so nice of them to give us wine. I know. The flight is less than 2 hours. Only an hour and forty minutes. And we're getting a meal too.
Dinner has been served.
Um, we are having stir-fried beef and it comes with salad. Salad and a piece of chocolate cake..
Alright, bit of a crazy update. We're not sure if we're going to make our flight.
We made it. They are holding the flight. You know what? W wouldn't have made it had it not been for these two really nice girls I think from the States who let us like jump two lines in the queue. Oh my gosh. Yes. Because we still had like 2 long zigzags to get through.
Update. We are greasy, we are sweaty. Feeling dirty and sleep deprived. Now we have to go find the S-Bahn. One step closer to getting to Nuremberg. Let's do it. Yes, get to the train station in Munich and then find the bus to Nuremberg.
So we made it to the bus terminal. We have our tickets for Nuremberg and now it is time for lunch. It is almost noon. So we hit up a German bakery and we got two savory things and a sweet thing.
We made it. I think it has been exactly 24 hours door to door because we left our AirBNB in Cape Town at like 2 in the afternoon and I think it is past 2 in the afternoon at this point.
So long day of travel. We arrived at our AirBNB which is pretty cute. Maybe we'll do a tour another day. But yes, it is time to sign off, get some rest. Say goodbye! Bye!

Guided Tour around Kirstenbosch Gardens Cape Town
We picked a rainy day to do some family time and headed out to explore some iconic spots on the south side of Cape Town. Accompanied by Dean's cousin from Colorado and her bestie from North Carolina, we ventured towards the beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
The gardens are an important landmark for Cape Town as they put on an extraordinarily rich and diverse display of indigenous flora. The Cape Floral Kingdom is impressively unique as it covers the smallest area of land in comparison to the other floral kingdoms by far, but at the same time has the highest diversity of plant species by far. The Fynbos families make up for 80% of the Cape Floral Kingdom (there are about 8500 species of Fynbos) and 6000 of these are endemic to the area surrounding Cape Town. Fynbos means fine bush as it describes the thin leaves synonymous with the Fynbos species. There are so many fascinating facts about these plants, but we think it may be best that you come through and learn about it while you are here.
On entering the nature reserve, bordering Table Mountain National Park, we aimed our attention towards the Boomslang Tree Canopy Walk. The dramatic clouds and views made it quite easy to admire this magnificent World Heritage Site. We continued through open fields and dense foliage, discovering Proteas, cycads and the forest of centurions. We climbed through trees and inhaled the wondrous scents in the herb garden… Regardless of rain, this is a must do if you plan on visiting Cape Town on holiday. There are many breathtaking and engaging activities that you can find on your journey through the micro and macrocosm of the Botanical Gardens. Take your first step!
The next part of the day took us further south towards Kalk Bay. We abandoned the car at St James, on account of a bit of road-works traffic, and walked the rest of the way. There is a cool walk way between the railway line and the sea. Our destination was the Brass Bell for fish and chips and a beer, the best way to catch up with family whilst overlooking the sea, with the Kalk bay harbor on the right, the Kalk bay surfers an the left and the Kalk Bay lighthouse under a beautiful rainbow dead ahead. All in all a fantastic day.
