New Riff Distilling plans major expansion
NEWPORT (Angela Ingram) - For about two years, New Riff Distilling has been crafting bourbon.
The barrels fill the building and the water used to make that bourbon is coming from a natural spring.
It turns out that Newport, Kentucky is sitting on phenomenal limestone filtered water. It's an aquifer a hundred feet down. We've drilled and made a well, said Ken Lewis who owns the distillery.
Now the distillery is expanding and putting a new whiskey campus on the city's West Side.
New Riff will build a $7.5 million facility along the new Route 9. It'll sit near the 11th Street bridge over the Licking River.
Lewis said, There's going to be rickhouses which are the buildings that hold the barrels. We can hold up to 22,000.
The city already had plans to spur development in the area and people who've lived there all their lives with their families have seen positive changes.
Bonnie Blevins lives near the site of the whiskey campus. She said, You got all the new facility out there, Target and all that. The new Kroger and all that out there which has created a lot of jobs.
The whiskey campus is expected to bring even more jobs. The project includes restoring two historic buildings. New Riff's owner believes the bourbon business could help tourism for the Tri-state and bring in more development.
They see the fact with Over-the-Rhine how places like New Riff Distilling can start turning around a neighborhood and bringing jobs and bringing private investment, Lewis said.
There are other plans the whiskey campus that include a pub, tap room, and restaurant. Lewis says the commonwealth has been helpful offering economic incentives for the new project.
Construction on the whiskey campus will start in early September.
New rules could boost Ky. alcohol sales, tourism
NEWPORT, Ky. (Meghan Mongillo) - New rules on bourbon and beer in Kentucky could boost alcohol sales and tourism to the state.
Senate Bill 11 is sitting on the governor's desk waiting for his signature, and northern Kentucky establishments are already raising a glass to the changes.
New Riff's Distilling in Newport has a new tasting bar. The reason it's new is because Kentucky's Senate Bill 11 will allow it to operate like a regular bar once they get a by the drink license.
Just like you have in Napa Valley and Sonoma, people can drop in and try one of their bourbon cocktails and taste products for a small fee. This would likely boost tourism in Kentucky as well.
Before, only people who bought a ticket and took a tour could taste.
The most important change for New Riff is in the event center. They'll soon be able to use it as a cash bar.
You can imagine [that] corporations want to have the attendees pay, said Ken LewisSo it opens a whole range of opportunities in our beautiful event center. )
That income from the event center is very important, especially because New Riff is a young distillery. Although they make gin in-house and sell other bourbon, they are still waiting for their bourbon to age.
Senate Bill 11 also helps out Kentucky Breweries, said Braxton Brewery CEO, Jake Rouse. Here at Braxton and other breweries around the state, it'll allow them to make twice as much.
Braxton Brewery in Covington just celebrated one year of being in business, so they're only on pace to make about 10,000 barrels. But when they grow larger, there's no longer a 25,000 barrel cap. Plus they can set up at small events, like farmer's markets, without having to go through a distributor.
We anticipate going up to 50,000 barrels. It's going to take some time no doubt, but we are really excited about the opportunity, said Rouse.
Bottom line, Kentucky breweries and distilleries are getting ready.
Governor Matt Bevin is expected to sign the new law, which should take effect in July.
It'll happy hour in Kentucky very soon.
New Riff Bourbon Barreled Kentucky Wild Gin- The Party Source
Johnathon J.O. Owen & Marty Holland New Riff Bourbon Barreled Kentucky Wild Gin.
New Riff Kentucky Wild Gin is crafted from a classic set of gin botanicals—such as coriander, orris and angelica root, cinnamon, lemon and bitter orange, and of course juniper berries—with locally derived botanicals native and local to New Riff Distilling. One of these is a bit of goldenrod, Kentucky’s cheerful state flower. New Riff also found a local native American juniper, with a different, softer yet more piney flavor than European juniper. Most special of all: the spice bush, a small tree used by Kentucky’s settlers and Native Americans to season their stews for centuries. The spice bush offers a unique spicy flavor reminiscent of allspice crossed with pink peppercorn and cinnamon—a truly wild, undomesticated, one-of-a-kind flavor in all the world. It is Kentucky Wild.

Retaliatory tariffs on whiskey concern distillers in Kentucky
NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) - Retaliatory tariffs imposed by China on some goods from the United States have bourbon distillers in Kentucky concerned.
The tariffs on whiskey were imposed by China, the European Union, Canada and Mexico in response to tariffs implemented by the Trump Administration. Ken Lewis owns New Riff Distilling in Newport. The company has been aging bourbon in barrels for four years and will start bottling it to sell in the next two weeks. But Lewis is concerned the 25% tariff could impact his business plan down the road.
Now we're adding another 25% and it could be as much as 10 euros and we could lose, the whole industry could lose 15, 20, 25% of their export market, Lewis said.
President Trump has argued the tariffs will reduce trade deficits with other countries.
We are in such great position, President Trump said at a rally Thursday evening.
There are also concerns in Ohio that tariffs could hurt jobs in the state and farmers. Pork and soybeans are exported to China.
I go around the state talking to people about it. They're worried about it. On the other hand, we do need to ensure the countries play fair, said Sen. Rob Portman (R) Ohio.
Sen. Portman, a former U.S. Trade representative said Friday rules needed to be in place long ago requiring China to accept more U.S. goods. Portman said he wants to see something negotitated with Mexico, Canada, and the European Union on steel since the countries aren't cheating.
In Kentucky, Ken Lewis hoped to export his bourbon to other countries in a couple years. He fears the tariffs could hurt the bourbon business and cost jobs. He also fears the tariffs could lead to an excess capacity of bourbon in the U.S. market which would lower the price and hurt the industry.
We'd like to go back to the way it was when the bourbon's booming and Europe and Canada and Mexico are adopting bourbon and we hope China and India are next, Lewis said.
Crews Install Still at Party Source Bourbon Distillery
NEWPORT, Ky. (Adam Clements) -- The newest addition to the Party Source in Newport takes another step towards completion Thursday. Crews are installing the copper still that makes the bourbon at the new Riff Distillery. Local 12's Adam Clements tells us why this is such a big deal. This has to have bourbon enthusiasts in the Tri-State very excited, especially considering the popularity of the spirit right now. Construction is well on its way for this facility that in addition to serving as a microdistillery will also feature a banquet hall and catering capabilities.Thursday, is all about that big copper still. It was delivered from Louisville Thursday morning. It's considered the heartbeat of any distillery, or in this case, microdistillery. Crews are using a crane to place this tall skinny still in the middle of four beamsIn terms of bourbon production, the new Riff Distillery will produce about twelve or thirteen batches of bourbon per day once it's up and running.Party Source bourbon guru Jay Erisman says fans will have to be patient. It's the right time to strike to get some bourbon made, however we won't have any bourbon until it ages. We have about 4 or 5 years to wait after that. So it pays to be patient in Kentucky bourbon.Another cool part about this microdistillery, once it's open for business it'll be added as a destination on the Kentucky bourbon trail. So folks across the river won't have to go far to get a taste of this hometown favorite. The new Riff Distillery is expected to open in the spring of 2014.

Places to see in ( Cincinnati - USA )
Places to see in ( Cincinnati - USA )
Cincinnati is a city in Ohio, on the Ohio River. The Over-the-Rhine district is known for its 19th-century architecture, including Findlay Market, which has food and craft vendors. To the north is the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The Cincinnati Museum Center encompasses history, science and children's museums in the art deco Union Terminal. Works spanning 6,000 years are on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Cincinnati is Ohio's third largest city and the largest metro region. It lies on the north bank of the Ohio River in Southwest Ohio in the United States of America. Known as the Queen City or Queen of the West, Cincinnati was the only 19th century American city that left a favorable impression on the then 30-year-old English author Charles Dickens. “Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated,” Dickens wrote in “American Notes.” “I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favorably and pleasantly to a stranger at the first glance as this does: with its clean houses of red and white, its well-paved roads, and foot-ways of bright tile. Nor does it become less prepossessing on a closer acquaintance.”
Avondale is a primarily residential urban neighborhood near the center of the city, notable for the presence of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Hyde Park is an upscale, largely white and upper class residential neighborhood. Mt. Adams is a trendy, upscale neighborhood located directly northeast of downtown Cincinnati. Clifton, not to be confused with a nearby Clifton Heights, is also located near the city center. Mt. Washington is an up and coming economically diverse neighborhood located on Cincinnati's east side.
Northside is an economically and racially diverse neighborhood notable for a strong sense of community investment and pride. Oakley is an up and coming neighborhood that borders Hyde Park. ver-the-Rhine (OTR) is the city's historic district. Price Hill is one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, first settled in 1789 and named Price Hill in the 1870s after General Rees Price. West End the little bit that survived of this once large densely populated neighborhood would not be notable for travelers except for the Dayton Street Historic District. Riverfront/The Banks This is a newly developed area in downtown Cincinnati that falls between Great American Ballpark home of the Reds. Bourbon Comparison, and why I'm SUCH a cheery guy...
third video upload of the day, yes I'm Bored.
we're drinking Bourbon! (and by we I mean ME) and doing a side by side comparison of Elijah Craig Small Batch 94 proof AND Small Town Spirits 'Not Your Fathers Bourbon' 86 Proof with Vanilla
a little warning for the for purists that follow me, there is a little diet soda mixing going on, I'm sorry in advance for upsetting your bourbon loving sensibilities... please forgive me
if you wish to support the channel (and help me buy more bourbon) please feel free to donate via Paypal to Straycat_74@yahoo.com
(btw I'm editing this blurb with 4 ounces of bourbon in me, my apologies ahead of time, but I can't feel my nose, or toes...)
***
there is a TMI warning here because it was 18 (not 17 years as stated int he video) years ago that my beloved blushing bride of 9 months told me that she didn't love me anymore, she was leaving, she was in love with my best friend (at the time), and that she was going to take my children away from me... She didn't end up doing that last one, but it was a kick in the balls to hear just 10 days before my birthday with a 2.5 MONTH old daughter to take care of. then the state got involved and made everything 10,000 times WORSE.

Skywheel project on track despite Corps of Engineers' concerns
NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) - Newport officials said the massive ferris wheel project for Newport On the Levee will keep moving forward despite issues with the Army Corps of Engineers.
“It raises some concerns but that’s not unusual with development projects,” Newport City Manager Tom Fromme told Local 12.
The $10 million “Skywheel” would be built on a platform that would require considerable construction work on the existing Newport floodwall. In a June 28, letter to Newport Mayor Jerry Peluso, Corps Engineering chief John Brock wrote that the developer’s initial configuration and construction methods, “would present an unacceptable risk to the structural integrity of the existing levee embankment.”
“We are in the process of submitting an updated package for the Corps’ review,” said Matt Stack of Koch Development in a telephone interview. “We are not pulling out of the project. Any development always has a process for approval.”
Stack said the Corps’ suggestion of moving the 235’ ferris wheel somewhere else was not an option.
“It doesn’t work anywhere else,” Stack said.
The attraction would have climate-controlled cars that would seat up to six people. The cars would provide a 360-degree view of the Ohio River and its riverfront. The typical ride would last about 10-12 minutes and make three complete revolutions. Stack said the project can be completed in 12 months after final Corps of Engineers approval.
Fromme was confident the developer could come up with a plan that passes Corps scrutiny. He pointed to Newport on the Levee project and the New Riff Distillery which both dramatically impacted the floodwall but had the Corps’ blessing.
“I just feel good. I don’t have any concerns at this point that there’s really something that is insurmountable.”
