Nevis The Paradise of Breathtaking Beauty
Colonised in the 1700s, Nevis was once home to a booming sugar cane enterprise. Settlers made their fortune there and built magnificent mansions where the upper crust would meet and revel in shameless largesse. Today, it is one of the world’s most unique vacation destinations and is home to some of the most picturesque beaches and interesting sites anywhere in the Caribbean.
The Beaches of Nevis
Nevis is home to several amazing beaches and use of them is either free or very inexpensive, depending on the location and activity. There are three main beaches. Each one has plenty of shoreline and is special in its own way.
Oualie Beach is festooned with a number of comfortable chairs and hammocks, all of which are free to use by paying customers of their typically-Caribbean beach bar. Snorkelling off Oualie is spectacular, and you can rent equipment onsite for other water sports as well, depending on your taste. The island’s name sounds just like “Wally” when pronounced – and you are sure to impress the locals if you pronounce it correctly straight away!
Pinney’s Beach is located on the west edge of Nevis, just north of the capital, Charlestown. Its sands have an inviting saffron colour and the shoreline seems endless at a first glance. Don’t be surprised if it looks familiar; Pinney’s has been the subject of many a travel publication photo and travellers agree that it looks every bit as inviting when you are standing on its shores as it does in the brochures. This beach is public and free to use and there are even a few affordable dining options for when you need a bite.
Lover’s Lane Beach is a smaller, undeveloped corner of Nevis that is often completely deserted. It provides a place for hours of uninterrupted peace and quiet, as well as the perfect backdrop for a spectacular sunset.
Botanical Gardens of Nevis
One of the many exquisite attractions of Nevis is its Botanical Gardens: approximately eight acres, situated high in the Montpelier Estates. Its views are spectacular and stretch all the way down to the shore.
Nevis Peak
In ancient times, a great volcano created the modern-day island of Nevis. The oft cloud-covered peak of this volcanic mountain is over 3,000 feet high. The steepest portions are made up of unspoiled rainforest (cloud forest at higher altitudes). The peak get considerable rainfall which feeds the many freshwater springs and wells throughout the island.

Discover a Fresh Take on a Timeless Caribbean Experience at Four Seasons Resort Nevis
Preserving the architectural and design integrity of the original building exteriors, the room renovations feature a lighter, cleaner and fresher décor, creating interest and drama through the use of scale, texture, pattern and colour.
Light drenched spaces give off a sense of comfort and the ultimate feeling of being completely relaxed. Additional design details reference a chic, fashionable and stylized voice of the Caribbean spirit and soul: the new wall-covers reference the British botanical patterns favored by the rich fabrics of 19th century England, but rendered in a fashionably contemporary pale sea-foam green that recalls the island’s frothy shoreline.
The multi-colored geometric carpet is inspired by the legacy of Caribbean stained glass windows. The desk chairs are inspired by the flora and fauna of Nevis, with particular affection for the mischievous yet lovable Green Vervet monkeys that are iconic ambassadors of the island.

Visit Nevis - HR 54 Cloudy Bay, Jan 2019
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg Rassy 54) motors the short distance from St.Kitts to anchor off Pinney’s Beach on Nevis, where we gradually fall in love with what becomes our favorite island in the Caribbean.
We explore Nevis for 9 days, 5 of them with a car. Surprisingly, we find so many things to see and do on this charming island. There are many old plantation estates, some in ruins and some famously restored into boutique hotels. Montpellier Inn is where Horatio Nelson married his Nevisian bride Fanny Nesbit in 1787; The Nesbit estate where Fanny was born and raised; Hermitage estate still has its original wooden house from the 1600s and Golden Rock estate is beautifully presented in lush tropical gardens high on the side of the volcano.
We trekked 2 hikes. One up the very steep incline to the volcano peak, climbing hand over hand up ropes most of the way and the other to the island’s water source deep in the natural rain forest. Following each hike we relaxed in the famous (very) hot baths that have been visited for centuries, famous for the healing powers of the high mineral content water.
Around the island there are many superb restaurants and bars. We ate in a few: Thai Oasis in the Botanical Gardens, authentic Indian in the Mount Nevis hotel, Turtle Time on Pinney’s beach. The only large resort is The Four Seasons, but it’s very tastefully done, merging into its surroundings on the lee side.
Charletown is the main town. It is a collection of period buildings all authentically kept in neat and tidy narrow streets. Beyond the physical beauty of the island, the highlight is the people who live here. Both the resident expats and the locals are extremely friendly and warmly welcome you. Clearly, it’s a nice place to be and live. 8-17 January 2019
