Split, Croatia: Modern City on Ancient Roots
More info about travel to Split: Split's residents are literally living in a Roman palace. In the fourth century AD the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired and built a vast residence to live out his golden years here in his native Dalmatia. Later when Rome fell, Diocletian's palace was abandoned. Eventually, a medieval town sprouted from its abandoned classical shell and his mausoleum became a cathedral. To this day, the maze of narrow alleys — once literally Diocletian's hallways — make up the core of Split. Nearby, the seaside promenade is perfect for a stroll.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF CROATIA // Arriving in Split Old Town ????????
These are my very first impressions of Croatia! We flew into Split a day ahead of our Medsailors Discovery tour and decided to explore Split Old Town and it was lovely! Not so sure about the Rakija though...
Oh yeh, and I bought a DJI Osmo Pocket at the airport to use as my new vlogging camera! On the whole I like it but it's definitely going to take some getting used to.

Croatia Travel Guide - Visiting the Town of Split
Take a tour of Town of Split in Croatia in Split, Croatia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The city of Split is the second in size and population only to Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia.
Archeologists date Split to be as ancient as the Greek empire, over two millenniums old.
The city is pristinely located on the shoreline of the Adriatic Sea.
It is thought to have originated from Aspálathos, a Greek protectorate, before it was taken by the Roman Empire.
Split's history and ancient architectural aesthetic only adds to the sublime culture it enjoys today.
The city boasts its Croatian pride and culture with museums, sports champions, and many celebrated Croatian composers.

Split, Croatia
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with just over 200,000 inhabitants, and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. Once merely considered by some as just transit point – with excellent transport connections by bus, sea, air and train, it’s easy to travel to and from the city – it is deservedly becoming a destination in its own right.
There are some fantastic sights in the city, both Roman and more modern, excellent options for dining, drinking and nightlife, plenty of beach opportunities and lots of choice for those wanting day trips.
Places featured:
Diocletian’s Palace:
Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian’s palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast.Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome.
Today the Illyrian province is part of Croatia. The so-called palace was a massive structure and contains not only the palace itself but also buildings, intended for housing military garrison. The whole complex occupied around 30,000 square meters. Today these ruins lie in the heart of the city of Split in Croatia.
The Riva:
The Riva started to look the way it does today two centuries ago, when the French, in time of Napoleon ruled these parts through Marshal Marmont. Today this promenade is the cities living room, the most popular and most important public place in Split. In the meantime it has been widened and reconstructed several times, but it was always blessed with the most spectacular set, the south facade of the Diocletian Palace, with the entrance into the Substructures, and later on with the buildings that were built west of the Palace, also the Franciscan monastery with the church of St. Francis, and the Bajamonti Dešković Palace and last but not least the Port Authorities building on the east end.
Riva today is a pedestrian heaven, thrusting with Cafés and restaurants, an ideal place for having your morning or afternoon coffee, or for an evening out with friends over drinks. Riva is the stage of the city life of Split, a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events, boisterous Split carnival, as well as the stage for meeting Split sportsmen after countless successes, such as Goran Ivanišević, Hajduk football club players and Jugoplastika basketball players, Olimpic medal winners... Riva is also a political forum, with decades of political opportunities being depicted through mass rallies. Naturally, Riva is always at its best in time of Sudamja, a celebration dedicated to St. Domnius, the patron saint of Split.
Marjan Hill:
Every time you want to take a break from the hectic lifestyle of the city is enough to take a little walk and head towards Marjan. Marjan is an integral part of the city center that extends from the Marmont Street and continues to the west. It’s long over 3 km. In 1964 it was declared a park and since then is considered a protected part of Split. This hills and its forests are the lungs of the city, the most popular place to escape from the city bustling and chaotic pace of life during the high season in July and August.

Split, Croatia Nightlife | Americans Visit Best Bars & Clubs
We had a blast trying out the amazing nightlife scene in #Split, Croatia! There are so many great bars and clubs in Split that it's almost hard to choose, but we're really happy with the 5 bars/clubs we visited.
We started the night at Fabrique Pub, then we went to Academia Ghetto Club (our favorite place of the night!). After that, we went to Marvlvs Library Jazz Club and tried rakija, a fermented fruit brandy that we loved. Next up, we visited Shotgun Shooters Club, got a late night snack, then headed to Charlie's Backpacker Bar.
Overall, the nightlife in Split, Croatia is incredible and we loved all the bars and clubs we visited!

Split is the main transport hub for Croatia - the best jumping off point when planning to visit the many beautiful islands in the Adriatic Sea.
You can take a bus or taxi from the Airport to the Split Port (the bus is more economical but involves a bit of waiting while it fills up before leaving).
Split Old Town is easy to access from the Port and there are some really stunning streets that one can explore in the Old Town. We had a couple of hours to explore the Old Town before getting our ferry to the island of Hvar.
Things you would like to explore if you are short of time:
The Riva: This is the main Waterfront of Split, and it is the first thing you will see as you approach the Old Town. Split's waterfront runs the length of the Old Town area.
It is one of the most attractive and interesting public places in the city of Split. It stands in front of the Diocletian's Palace, which is another stunning place to explore.
Views from the Riva across the Split harbor are simply magnificent. So when you are in Split take a walk across the Riva, and if you have time, do enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
Alleyways of Split Old Town:
Old Town in Split is a jumble of little streets and cobblestone lanes. You will love to get lost around these lanes and explore hidden nooks and crannies filled with history and charm.
The Diocletian Palace:
The Old Town of Split resides within the walls of this Roman Palace. This palace is one of the most well-preserved and impressive monuments of Roman Architecture still existing in the world. It was built in the 4th century from White stone transported from the island of Brâc. The old city is a UNESCO Heritage site, and is also famous as a setting for the popular series 'Game of Thrones'.
Terrace Vidilica : Restaurant Teraca Vidilica has one of the best locations in town due to its unique location that overlooks the entire city. Located on Marijan Hill, this place is only a 10- min walk from the center of town. You can easily visit this place even if you are short of time.

Welcome to Split! We've heard so much about this little coastal town in Croatia that we knew we'd have to travel here soon. Fortunately grabbing a bus or train is easy via so we had a cheap and easy bus ride!
Split is definitely a beautiful place, the old streets have a lot of charm but it's got that coastal Croatian feel that you just can't avoid! Hopefully that comes across in this travel vlog anyway, it was Sep 2018 we visited.
Travel to Split seems really straight forward because of it's popularity and there is always a bus or boat coming and going! Getting in and out of the city is definitely straight forward and for the most part our journey from Zagreb To Split was painless.

CROATIA VLOG || A Long Weekend In Split, Hvar & Dubrovnik || Run Char
Croatia Travel Vlog (Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik) Summer 2017
In June 2017, I went to Croatia for 5 days with my sister. We split our time between Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik. Here are some of the things we did during our stay:
SPLIT:
Croatia's second-largest city, Split, has the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. It's home to dozens of bars, restaurants, shops, markets and beaches, whilst still having thousands of years worth of history to explore.
Places to visit include The Cathedral of St Domnius, Diocletian's Palace, Marjan Forest Park, Peristyle Square, Basement Halls of Diocletian's Palace and The Markets.
For excellent views of Split, hike up Marjan Forest Park or pay a small fee to climb the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius (181 step stairs to the top).
There are also small beaches, museums, the infamous Krka Waterfalls and wineries.
HVAR:
Hvar (probably my favourite place in Croatia) is a stunning, small bay town a few hours away from the mainland. Hvar has a number of beautiful beaches, lots of nice restaurants/cafes and great nightlife!!!
My top recommendations for Hvar, is walking/climbing from the town centre to the Fortress. Here you can see incredible views of Hvar and the bay area.
The blue and green cave tour is a day trip that's also worth doing! The first stop on the tour is the Green Cave, where we got the chance to get out and swim. It was then off to the hidden inlet called Stiniva for some sunbathing and swimming, before making our way to the Blue Cave (which was INCREDIBLE!!). After seeing the Blue Caves, wee were taken to the island of Vis and a fishing village, Komiza, before ending the day on the Paklinski Islands.

DUBROVNIK:
We only had an evening and morning in Dubrovnik, but managed to see most of its Old Town. Encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th Century, Dubrovnik's Old Town is filled with small markets, bars, museums and restaurants.
Other points of interest include Fort Minceta and Fort Bokar, Pile Gate, the numerous walking tours (including ghost tours, game of thrones tour and old vs new city tours) and the stunning bay area.
It was really easy (and fairly cheap) to travel between the Islands and mainland.
Hope you enjoy this and please like/subscribe for more videos soon.
