What's On at the New Zealand Maritime Museum
Come and explore New Zealand’s seafaring history at the Maritime Museum on Auckland’s waterfront. Try your hand at yacht design, hear the cannon fire, and test your sea legs in the rocking cabin.
There’s plenty of opportunity to get out on the water too. Our heritage vessel Ted Ashby sets sail six days a week taking you on a one hour voyage. Help hoist the sails or sit back and enjoy the view of Auckland’s iconic skyline and the Harbour Bridge.
The Museum is open 9am – 5pm every day except Christmas Day.

The New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Anaui A Tangaroa is a maritime museum in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located on Hobson Wharf, adjacent to the Viaduct Harbour in central Auckland. It houses exhibitions spanning New Zealand's maritime history, from the first Polynesian explorers and settlers to modern day triumphs at the America's Cup. Its Maori name is 'Te Huiteanaui-A-Tangaroa' - holder of the treasures of Tangaroa (the Sea God).
The museum's founding director was Rodney Wilson, who from 1989 led fundraising efforts to establish the museum, which opened in 1993, the year the America's Cup regatta was held in Auckland.
A NZ$8 million extension to the northern end of the museum was built in the late 2000s to house a permanent exhibition, Blue Water, Black Magic, about Sir Peter Blake. It includes the original NZL 32 (Black Magic)

KZ1 Yacht (Used to challenge for 1988 America's cup), New Zealand Maritime Museum, Auckland, NZ
KZ 1 was a one off sailing yacht used to challenge for the 1988 America's Cup.
KZ 1 was designed by Bruce Farr and is constructed from a carbon fibre and Kevlar/Nomex sandwich.
Skippered by David Barnes and manned by a crew of 40 from the Mercury Bay Boating Club in Whitianga, New Zealand.
KZ 1 was given the nicknames of the Big Boat or Big Beauty by financial backer, Sir Michael Fay.
The unconventional challenge of Michael Fay and KZ 1 prompted American syndicate head Dennis Conner to respond with an unconventional defense. Lacking time and looking to protect the planned international event in 1992, the defenders built Stars & Stripes (US 1), a catamaran that Conner sailed to win the challenge, though most of the battle was fought in court.
KZ 1 is now on display near the National Maritime Museum in downtown Auckland.

Wellington City, New Zealand - Walking Video
Wellington (Māori: Te Whanganui-a-Tara [tɛ ˈfaŋanʉi a taɾa]) is the capital and second-most populous urban area of New Zealand, with 418,500 residents.[3] It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Wellington is the major population centre of the southern North Island and is the administrative centre of the Wellington Region, which also includes the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa. It is the world's southernmost capital of a sovereign state.[4] Wellington features a temperate maritime climate and is the world's windiest city by average wind speed.[5]
The Wellington metropolitan area comprises four local authorities: Wellington City, on the peninsula between Cook Strait and Wellington Harbour, contains the central business district and about half the population; Porirua on Porirua Harbour to the north is notable for its large Māori and Pacific Island communities; Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt are largely suburban areas to the northeast, together known as the Hutt Valley.
As the nation's capital since 1865, the New Zealand Government and Parliament, Supreme Court and most of the public service are based in the city. Architectural sights include The Old Government Buildings—one of the largest wooden buildings in the world—as well as the iconic Beehive, the executive wing of the New Zealand Parliament. Wellington is also home to several of the largest and oldest cultural institutions in the nation, such as the National Archives, the National Library, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and numerous theatres. It plays host to many artistic and cultural organisations, including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Royal New Zealand Ballet. One of the world's most liveable cities, the 2016 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranked Wellington 12th in the world, and was first in the world for both liveability and non-pollution by Deutsche Bank, from 2017–18.[6][7]
Wellington's economy is primarily service-based, with an emphasis on finance, business services, and government. It is the centre of New Zealand's film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and innovation,[8] with two public research universities. Wellington is one of New Zealand's chief seaports and serves both domestic and international shipping. The city is served by Wellington International Airport, the third busiest airport in the country. Wellington's transport network includes train and bus lines which reach as far as the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa, and ferries connect the city to the South Island.
Described by Lonely Planet in 2013 as the coolest little capital in the world,[9] the emerging world city[10] has grown from a bustling Māori settlement to a small colonial outpost, and from there to an Australasian capital experiencing a remarkable creative resurgence.[11]

???? Auckland is a city in the North Island of NZ, which is the largest urban area in the country, the population around 1,628,900. A diverse and multicultural city. The Māori-language name for Auckland is Tāmaki-makau-rau, meaning Tāmaki with a hundred lovers. ????It was replaced as the capital in 1865 by Wellington, but immigration to Auckland stayed strong, and it has remained the country's most populous city. Today, Auckland's central business district is the major financial centre of New Zealand. ✍????To me, I don’t like the commercials city, even though the transportation is quite convenient. In the street, people are walking very fast, as rush as they can. You can tell while you take the bus in the morning, the situation just like Hong Kong. ✨Maritime Museum✨Mount Eden

The Journey of a Million Miles - Following Steps - Trailer
Trailer for the new exhibition The Journey of a Million Miles - Following Steps which is on at the New Zealand Maritime Museum from March 18th - September 3rd 2017.
Explore the journeys made by migrants to New Zealand in a compelling exhibition inspired by real-life experiences. Created by social practice artist, Tiffany Singh, the installation personalises and unpacks the conversations around the process of resettling in Aotearoa.
Relevant and engaging, “The Journey of a Million Miles – Following Steps” will transform the Edmiston Gallery at the New Zealand Maritime Museum into a stunning and thought-provoking environment. Music, audio and digital technology are used to convey and share a variety of migration experiences that reflect the joy, heartache and confusion of moving to a new land. Visitors will also be able to share their immigration stories, which will be integrated into the exhibition.
“I hope that by engaging with the artwork and the stories, people will take away a new understanding of what it’s like to resettle here,” says Singh. “Through listening to the different stories there is the potential to build tolerance, compassion and an awareness that can filter down to the younger generations so that we can build a more harmonious society.”
There will be a range of public programmes that accompany the exhibition – everything from public talks, holiday programme workshops, live performances and family days. Check back to our website during the exhibition run for details.
Entry to the exhibition is free with your Maritime Museum entry ticket. Find out more at maritimemuseum.co.nz
