Riding electric bike around the streets of Newark, England
Newark-On-Trent History
The second siege of Newark-On-Trent was relieved by Prince Rupert in March 1644. After Rupert's departure, the artillery left behind by the defeated Parliamentarians was incorporated into Newark's defences, which were significantly extended. The Spittal, which had served as the Parliamentarian headquarters during the 1644 siege, was completely demolished and a great earthwork called the King's Sconce was constructed in its place. The sconce was nearly three hundred feet across and covered an area of three acres. It was square with arrow-head bastions at each corner where cannon were mounted, and was surrounded by a ditch up to thirty feet wide and fifteen feet deep. An identical fort was constructed to guard the southern approach to Newark. It was called the Queen's Sconce and still stands today.

England Newark Rail Station
Towards the end of a long day that began in York, then spent to and from Lincoln, ending in Newark where I'm hoping to get a ride to my hotel. I should mention that I had a special global travel phone from Verizon, since they said my own phone wouldn't work here, and the one they gave me stopped working as soon as I hit Bath and needed to be able to call hotels and cabs. So, Adventure!
Also, some discussion of finding the best ___ food in the world in one's own home town. For a Canterburyite, Canterbury has the best Mexican food ever. And I say that Decatur, IL has the best Chinese food...it's personal.

Notts County Council visiting Clarke Avenue Newark-on-Trent and had around 12 pavement slabs removed and tarmaced . It would be a good thing to do the entire width on both sides. The residents of Hawtonville are concerned about the poor state of the pavement slabs which is a potential hazzard for years. I have heard their cry will the help come soon. Let restore the pavement to its previous safe state, across the entire width of both side need to be tarmaced for both safety of residents and pedestrians alike.

Allan Towler Friends of Newark Castle Chairman Giving History Of John Mountney
Allan Towler, Chairman of the Friends of Newark Castle and Gardens. Giving History Of John Mountney Newark Castle Custodian until 1912.The death of a Newark Castle custodian who swallowed weedkiller after his collection of artefacts was removed is being marked by an exhibition.
John Mountney who died in 1912, was the second custodian of the Nottinghamshire castle and spent years collecting items to illustrate the history of Newark.
In a dispute with the council, the castle's owners, John Mountney lost the collection and was left heartbroken.
The exhibition of photographs
Mr Mountney became the castle's second custodian in 1901 and worked enthusiastically to promote the castle as a tourist attraction. He turned a room in the south-west tower into a museum, displaying artefacts and curiosities which had been given to him by various people in the town. The tragic story of Mr Mountney's death unfolded after King Edward VII paid an impromptu visit to Newark Castle in September 1909.
Might is not always right. Broken hearted John Mountney's suicide note
Custodian In the absence of civic dignitaries to welcome the King, it was left to Mr Mountney to show him around the castle. On leaving, the King signed the visitors' book.
Mr Mountney then set about producing a commemorative postcard to mark the visit but the borough council deemed it distasteful and ordered Mr Mountney to surrender the page with the signature so it could be displayed at Newark Town Hall.
Relations between Mr Mountney and the council deteriorated and on 12 February 1912, as the council was planning a new museum for the town, council workmen arrived at the castle and removed the exhibits.
The following day, Mr Mountney went to work as usual but when he did not return home for lunch, his wife Elizabeth went to look for him.
She found her husband lying dead in the south-west tower having taken some arsenic-based weedkiller.
'Tragic consequences'
At his inquest, it was revealed Mr Mountney had been offered £2 for his entire collection and left a note which read: Might is not always right. Broken hearted.
Allan Towler, chairman of the Friends of Newark Castle and Gardens, said: We couldn't just let the centenary of such a story pass by, a story of unforeseen tragic consequences.
John held the visitors' book while the King signed it. He was happy and glorious afterwards, quite understandably.
Perhaps after the council took ownership of the book, the matter should have ended there but it didn't and the rest is history.
Due to present-day conditions in the castle, the actual exhibits cannot be displayed but photos of them all have been taken.
Images include paintings, photographs, models, sculptures as well as fossils, clothes, weaponry and ancient maps.
Mr Mountney is buried in Newark Cemetery.

Newark Town Band Xmas Season at Town Hall Ballroom
Newark Town Band Musical Director Graham Purdy has taken on the role with enthusiasm and the Band are confident of continued success under his direction in years to come. Newark Town Band Xmas Season at Town Hall Ballroom. The town has a long and proud tradition of producing fine brass bands. The Newark Town Band became a regular feature at civic events around the town, accompanying the annual Christmas carol services in the parish church, concerts at the Town Hall and Newark Palace Theatre, and on summer Sunday afternoons, open-air concerts in the grounds of Newark castle. On the 16th March 1988 at a Newark Town Council Meeting of the Financial and General Purposes Committee a decision was made to allow Newark Town Band to use the Towns Crest on letterheads, a uniform and music stand banners.
By the 1990s there were just a few loyal members left trying hard to keep the band going, these were the late Mr Ronald James, the late Mr Ronald Cunnington (Euphonium), the late Mr William Schedler (Eb Bass Secretary), the late Mr Paul Francis (Flugel Treasurer), Mr Guy Addock (cornet), Mr John Moore MBE (President, Chairman, Tenor Horn), Miss Susan Robinson -- Marsh (Cornet), Miss Hazel Robinson (Tenor Horn) and Mr Roger Bryan (Cornet). Roger Bryan and John Moore are still in the band.
The band practises every Wednesday evening between 7-9pm in it's own band room in Newark. If you are interested in joining the band please contact newarktownband@hotmail.com
