Hut 9 Open Weekend - 8 Oct 2017
Amazing aerial views of Hut 9 (Grade II listed WW2 historical building) and Island Farm in Bridgend, South Wales, so unique to WW2 history for Wales and also Great Britain.
We are putting things away at the end of yet another very busy and successful Hut 9 Open Weekend at Island Farm, Bridgend.
Thanks to all visitors for their good words and generous donations, the re-enactors that brought Hut 9 to life and last but not least Lloyd Williams for bringing over and operating safely his drone while we were packing up.
Roll on 2018 for the usual March (escape anniversary) and October Events. The March 2018 Event is nearly fully booked.
We shall be announcing the 2018 October dates in good time on Facebook and here: hut9.org.uk (Hut 9 Preservation Group web site).
The Island Farm buildings (prefabricated huts from concrete blocks) were not built for use as a POW Camp. They were put up in 1938. During WW2 Island Farm has multiple good uses:
1940-1944 - Billet for the Royal Ordnance Factory workers.
1943-1944 - American billet for the 109 Field Artillery (28th Infantry Division) stationed here prior to D-Day.
1944-1945 - German POW, Island Farm Camp 198. Escape of 70 prisoners took place on 10 March 1945.
1945-1948 - High Ranking German Officer Camp, Island Farm Special Camp XI. Karl Rudolf Gerd von Rundstedt (12 December 1875 – 24 February 1953). He was a Field Marshal in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II in command of the European Operations. He was at Island Farm along with other high ranking German Officers prior to attending The Nuremberg Trials.
Check out Brett's website at IslandFarm.Wales and Richard's website at bracklaordnance.co.uk for more information on WW2 local history.
