Newby Hall is an 18th-century country house situated beside the River Ure at Skelton-on-Ure, near Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building and contains a collection of furniture, painting and precious artefacts. The south side of the grounds, by the river, has extensive herbaceous borders and woodland walks. Also Grade I listed are the Georgian stable block, leased as offices, and the Church of Christ the Consoler. Newby Hall is open to the public from 21 March until 1 October.
The manor of Newby was sold by the Crosland family in the 1690s, after the death of Sir John Crosland in 1670, to Sir Edward Blackett, MP for Ripon. He demolished the existing manor house and in 1697 built a spacious mansion designed with the assistance of Sir Christopher Wren. He was succeeded in 1718 by his son, Edward, and he in turn by his nephew Edward. The latter sold the estate in 1748 to Richard Elcock (later Richard Elcock Weddell) and it passed from him to his young son William Weddell in 1762.
During the Second World War, Newby was one of several country retreats selected to house the Royal Family, if they had needed to be evacuated from the capital. The present owners, the Compton family, are indirect descendants of William Weddell. They have restored the property. The gardens, which have extensive herbaceous borders and woodland walks, were developed in their present form by Major Edward Compton, who took over Newby in 1921. His son Robert Edward John (Robin) Compton, born in 1922, was chairman of Time-Life International for many years. He took over the running of Newby Hall in 1960. He was appointed High Sheriff of North Yorkshire in 1978 and Deputy Lieutenant from 1981. The house then passed down to Richard Clephane Compton and his family, Orlando, Ludovic and Sasha (Alexandra).
In 1979 a newly constructed adventure playground was opened by Sir Jackie Stewart. A 2007 TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park was filmed at the Hall. Newby Hall also holds the National Collection of the genus Cornus (dogwoods).

Newby Hall Gardens in August
OK for children and family viewing OK for children and family viewing Newby Hall is in North Yorkshire and is the home of Richard and Lucinda Compton. As it is a family home no photography is allowed inside the Hall.
One of the main attractions in the garden is the Double Herbaceous Border that runs from the south front of the house right down to the River Ure. It is 172m in length and is one of the longest in the country. A number of compartmented gardens run off both sides of the border. The gardens were created over 50 years ago and cover 40 acres. There is also a lovely Children's Adventure Garden and a Miniature Railway that runs frequently along the side of the river. Nice place to have a meal, snack, or drink on the day out or just an ice-cream while walking around the gardens. A day out at Newby Hall and Gardens is for all the family to enjoy.

The real FOZZIE BEAR (!!!) in Newby Hall - cycling in Yorkshire
Vlog #53 After a boat trip with P&O Ferries we arrive in Yorkshire. Some hills to beat, but it's such a beautiful place for cycling. I visit Newby Hall, a well known garden, privately owned, but open for the public. I talk to director Stuart Gill and gardener Ian Forbes. A big surprise: in the Bear House I meet the real Fozzie Bear from The Muppet Show. Also the bear of Mr. Bean, Teddy Bear, and Paddington Bear and Winnie the Pooh.
We cycle through Pateley Bridge - a big hill over here! And end up cycling in the dark. A late check in at The Red Lion & Manor House.

We Love Ripon
Hunters present #weloveripon, a collaborative video created alongside other small businesses that support the city of Ripon. Ripon is a small cathedral city in North Yorkshire, England. Located near Harrogate, the city is over 1,300 years old and is the third smallest city in England by population. Ripon is a well known tourist destination and is well positioned in North Yorkshire for exploring but for centuries, the city has been a popular residential area with plenty of work and schooling opportunities. In recent years the city has become a thriving independent hub for small local businesses
We worked with some fantastic and energetic local businesses to produce this video. Oliver’s Pantry is one of the most iconic cafes in the city offering a fantastic range of homemade produce served with a smile. Memorable Moments have been in the city for a few years now offering a lovely range of gifts and cards for those special moments. The Little Book shop is not little in knowledge and offer a whole host of different types of literature and if they haven’t got it, they will get it for you.
A beautiful iconic building set just off the town square, is the Workhouse museum, which offers a real life feel for the days gone by and reveals the real history of what it was like, for the not so fortunate back in the 1800s. With a classroom, a working kitchen demonstrating traditional methods of cooking which accompanies the well-tended rear kitchen garden, with traditional planting which would have been tended by the inmates at the time.
The Ripon Racecourse known as “Yorkshires Garden race course” because of its pleasant surroundings, is located just on the edge of Ripon and is well recognised as a very popular meet for local Yorkshire based owners and families.
Ripon is surrounded by beautiful open countryside and the Yorkshire dales are on your doorstep, this thriving city offers everything that both the young and old residents would enjoy.
There are independent retailers offering unusual and unique shopping with quaint traditional public houses, cosy independent restaurant’s offering all kinds of international cuisine for every palette, lively bars, a cinema, swimming pool, leisure centre and of course Ripon City Cathedral. Every Thursday Ripon is home to a very popular and diverse market with every kind of stall possible, from your local veg stall to your new handbag.
So in short why wouldn’t you want to live and work in Ripon City with excellent links to the A1 and A61 for those wishing to travel to Leeds, York and Newcastle. Take a look at #weloveripon which shows why Ripon is such a fabulous place to live and work, we look forward to meeting you very soon.
