Newhailes, Musselburgh, Scotland
Newhailes is an amazing survival story and is a dignified 17th-century home in authentic condition. Rather than attempt to re-create an immaculate dwelling, the NationalTrust has worked hard to keep the house untouched by modern hands. If you're hungry for Scottish history, Newhailes features prominently in the Scottish Enlightenment. The 18th-century designed landscape surrounding the house holds a few surprises of its own. Newhailes is a truly unique place to visit

The Newhailes Shell Grotto, Musselburgh
This ruined Shell Grotto was part of a mid 18th century pleasure ground at Newhailes House near Musselburgh in East Lothian. The estate was created by the Earl of Stair and included other features such as a Palladian bridge and a Tea or Summerhouse.
Newhailes Palladian Bridge and Old Tea House, Musselburgh
A rare but ruinous survival of a 1740s Tea House at Newhailes, standing on a classical Palladian Bridge with a view of cascades and waterfalls. The Shell Grotto stands near by. Large windows once gave a perfect view of the burn and woodlands.

Cherish Productions - Newhailes Test Footage
This is footage from a recent visit to Newhailes Estate, just outside Edinburgh. Newhailes is a wonderful National Trust property and offered us the perfect opportunity to test out our new camera - the Sony FX1. We were able to test a number of features of this camera including the 12x optical zoom, shot transitions and selective focus - as you will see in this clip. We hope to use similar footage in the introductions of the various wedding videos we will be filming this summer. This song would certainly make a great intro on future films.

Newhailes Visitor Centre for the National Trust for Scotland - 5 Star VisitScotland Award
This fine historic house, set in a fascinating designed landscape, is something of a time-capsule.
Newhailes is a 17th-century villa, later significantly added to by the Dalrymple family, who were influential figures of the Scottish Enlightenment.
It is an amazing survival story of early 18th century decorative interiors and collections, as the National Trust for Scotland has conserved and presented what history has left and visitors will see a mellow, rather than immaculately restored, house. It contains a fine collection of paintings and furniture, and much of the original decorative scheme, including Chinese hand-pained wallpaper.
The house is set in an important 18th century designed landscape with woodland walks, open parkland, remains of water-gardens and built features including a shell grotto and classical summerhouse.

Nuthatch at Newhailes, March 2012
Battle of Pinkie Cleugh 1547 (re-enactment highlights)
In September 1547, the Duke of Somerset led a large English invasion force towards Edinburgh in order to force the betrothal of the infant queen of Scots, Mary, to the young Edward VI of England. The Scottish regent, Arran, had to unite divided religious and dynastic loyalties in order to effectively resist the forced union, and succeeded in raising an larger Scots army. But facing Somerset's supremacy in cavalry, handguns and longbows, Arran unexpectedly chose to attack the English positions near Musselburgh. This sudden advance forced Somerset to send in waves of cavalry charges, and although the wet ground and ploughed fields prevented them breaking through the pike formations, the horsemen successfully stalled the Scottish attack. Under relentless arrow and gunfire, the Scots army broke apart - pursued by a vengeful cavalry. Despite terrible losses, Arran's regency survived and he reassembled an army with French backing and managed to thwart Somerset's ability to exploit his victory. Mary was sent to France beyond the reach English armies, where she was raised as a Catholic whilst the reformation took hold in her kingdom, storing up troubles for her future.
