Eng Tour Diaries - Eps 3: The beauty of Newlands
It's known around the world as one of the traditional New Years Day test venues. The backdrop of Table Mountain, the Castle Brewery, the railway station and the magnificent old oak trees position Newlands right up there with one of the most beautiful grounds in the world. We find out what players, commentators and the public think of this incredible ground.
Cape Town's Iconic cricket stadium renamed PPC Newlands
PPC Ltd announced the company’s naming rights partnership with Newlands Cricket Ground at the stadium today. This momentous occasion sees PPC, leading supplier of cement in Southern Africa, join forces with iconic brand, Newlands, one of the world’s most prestigious venues and a stronghold of South African cricket, to rename the stadium “PPC Newlands”.
Darryll Castle, CEO of PPC Ltd, expressed the company’s excitement at becoming part of the Western Province Cricket family. “We’re exceptionally proud to be creating a new moment in history for these two champion brands and are looking forward to adding real value to the sport, the community and, ultimately, the country through this new legacy partnership with the Western Province Cricket Association.”
That is not only because of the commercial value of this partnership. It is also because the values that underpin the PPC-success are so similar to the philosophy that has been a key to the Western Province Cricket Association’s (WPCA) approach.
PPC and Newlands have become synonymous with excellence.
The largest cement producer in South Africa, PPC is already producing eight and half million tons per annum. The company wants to continue to set the standard in the industry with a committed focus on innovation and sustainability.
Both industry leaders, WPCA and PPC, are committed to growth.
PPC has embraced the importance of operating in emerging markets, where 70% of the world’s cement is produced. In fact, the company has stated it as a goal to generate 40% of its revenue from the rest of the continent by 2017.
Newlands, in accordance with a new stadium income-generating model implemented by Cricket South Africa, will host 18 internationals within the next four years.
Both PPC and Newlands are focused on customer-care.
The customers are the reason for PPC’s existence and its efforts are focused on good relationships, understanding and meeting their needs consistently.
The company is seen by its stakeholders as caring and adding value, and as long-term contributors; not short-term takers.
Newlands, rated by many to be the most picturesque test cricket venue in the world, is synonymous with a fantastic atmosphere and has consistently attracted some of the largest domestic crowds at both ODIs and Test cricket.

Cape Town Stadium
The Cape Town Stadium (Afrikaans: Kaapstad-stadion; Xhosa: Inkundla yezemidlalo yaseKapa) in Cape Town, South Africa is a stadium that was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. During the planning stage, it was known as the Green Point Stadium, which was the name of the previous stadium on the site, and this name was also used frequently during World Cup media coverage. It has been the home ground of Ajax Cape Town F.C. since 2010 and will host the South Africa Sevens rugby tournament from 2015 onwards.
The stadium is located in Green Point, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Cape Town city centre and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a popular tourist and shopping venue. The stadium had a seating capacity of 64,100 during the 2010 World Cup. However, its current capacity is 55,000. The stadium is connected to the waterfront by a new road connection, Granger Bay Boulevard, and is surrounded by a 60-hectare urban park. The stadium was built by South African construction contractor Murray & Roberts.
The stadium is located in Green Point, on the Atlantic coast just west of the Cape Town city centre. The stadium is located in Green Point, on the Atlantic coast just west of the Cape Town city centre.
Cape Town Stadium
Location of the stadium in the Cape Town metropolitan area
During construction, Cape Town Stadium was unofficially known as Green Point Stadium, the name of an older stadium demolished to make way for the new stadium. During October 2009, the city asked for the public to propose names for the new stadium and the name Cape Town Stadium was chosen.
Usage after the World Cup
A consortium consisting of South Africa's Sail Group and French-based Stade de France were awarded the service contract to operate the stadium and ensure that it remains a sustainable multi-purpose venue after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The consortium, called Business Venture Investments 1317, was involved in the management of the stadium from January 2009 onwards. The city municipality paid the consortium to manage the stadium up to and during the World Cup, after which the consortium will lease the stadium from the city for not less than ten years and not more than 30 years.
Following the World Cup, the stadium capacity was reduced to 55,000, enabling it to cater for all types of sports, including rugby, as well as music concerts and other major events. The stadium features corporate hospitality suites, medical, training, and conferencing and banqueting facilities. The consortium will operate the stadium as well as manage and maintain the defined areas of the surrounding urban park and sports precinct on the 85-hectare Greenpoint Common from stadium revenue.
Ajax Cape Town has used the stadium as their home ground from the 2010-11 Premier Soccer League season onwards. Due to the stadium's ongoing financial problems, the City of Cape Town had sought to acquire Western Province rugby as an anchor tenant. After four years of talks, Western Province announced in December 2014 that they had decided to remain at Newlands Stadium. In March 2015, the South African Rugby Union announced that the South Africa Sevens tournament would be staged at Cape Town Stadium for four years, beginning in December 2015.

169 vs South Africa in Cape Town
January 2, 1997: India were touring South Africa and they were humiliated in the first Test. The start of the second Test was no different as the likes of Allan Donald, Lance Klusener and Shaun Pollock ripped apart the Indian top order and India were struggling at 58/5.
But Tendulkar was at the crease and he found a helping hand in Azharuddin as both these batsmen displayed a superb show of bravery as they tackled the pacers and shared 222 runs between them. As a result of this incredible partnership, India reached a total of 359 runs. Till date, it is believed to be one of Tendulkar's finest knocks.
Result: South Africa won by 282 runs
