Anstey Hill Ruins : Newman's Nursery Abandoned
I visited this charming ruin today and put this piece together, but are there Ghosts.
I am not aware that any Paranormal Team have investigated this site, and I only know of two stories. Annie Newman the youngest child of 17, died in the kitchen area of the house. She tumbled into a giant pot of boiling water in the kitchen area of the house - she was around 3 years old.
Charles Newman fell from his horse and was killed - the story relates he fell from the horse and hit his head on a horse trough, killing him.
Is this place haunted ? Not sure, the footprint of life gone by is imprinted in every brick, this ruin is listed in the South Australian Heritage register.
Charles Newman established the Nursery with his family in around 1854, when he purchased 68 acres in 1854.
The land was known as Water Gully, it features springs and a beautiful gully.
The first image is from the State Library Archive
From around 1855 the property prospered, and in it's greatest time sported 469 acres - Mr Newman was quite a wealthy man.
During the years of 1857 and 1871 - the land and the amazing produce from the nursery was exhibited in Adelaide.
Mr Newman had 17 children, by 1870 - Hothouses grew exotic plants - by the end of the 19th century including a dairy and glasshouses.
Plants included, orange tree's, grapes - orchids, roses and chrysanthemums.
The reputation of the 'Newman Model Nursery', grew and many prizes were won, including two 'First Orders of Merit'.This prize won during the 1887 Jubilee for the Queen.
The ultimate end for this magnificent place was floods, terrible floods during February 1913. The original Mr Newman had an accident and fell from his horse - around 1889 - killing him, the property and business was then handed down to his sons.
It was difficult to fund the full repair due to the flood damage, and in 1925 Mr Newman younger started a smaller nursery in Tea Tree Gully - a familiar site to many of us today - the business still thrives. Over later years the property changed hands a number of times.
The property had a varied life in latter years - a dairy and also used for sheep.
There is nothing left of the grand and thriving place these days, yet the ruin now is on the State Heritage Register.
The horrific Ash Wednesday fires of 1983, killed off any remaining plants that had managed to grow wild.
The history is rather extensive and worth a Google !

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
