Newport Oregon Police Dept - National Night Out 2018
The 2018 National Night Event was a tremendous success. Thank you to all of the City Staff (and significant others) and Volunteers that participated. Our goal was to have an event and hope people showed. We definitely met our goal and the attendance exceeded our expectations. We estimated more than 500 guests attended. Attendees all had smiles and enjoyed the information and giveaways that were provided. I heard lots of positive comments and it was great to see our City Staff and community interact in such a positive manner. A special thank you, and good job to Jovita Ballentine for arranging the vendors and helping coordinate a successful National Night Out. ~ Chief Jason Malloy

Come and relax in a most unique part of Newport, on the Oregon Coast. Take in the phenomenal panoramic view of Yaquina Bay, Yaquina Bay Bridge,Historic Newport Bayfront, sailboats, sea lions, and much more. Our Suites provide a tranquil ambiance that is ever changing.
Our custom built 4500 sq. ft. home was specially designed for guests to capture the fantastic, ever changing views from high above Yaquina Bay.
Evenings at the Lightkeeper's Inn Bed and Breakfast are mesmerizing. As the sun sets, you can watch the bayfront transform into a quiet harbor. The lights in the harbor gradually begin to light the walkways. The fishing vessels come in throughout the evening and light up the bridge as they come in.
During the day, there is much to explore, all within walking distance. You can walk through the State Park, stroll on the beach, or visit The Haunted Lighthouse. Wander the historic bayfront and shop in some
of the beautiful galleries, visit our candy shops for a treat, go down to the docks and watch the seals, and see what the fisherman have brought in.
Bay Front activities include booking a deep sea fishing trip or a whale watching excursion. Bring your boat, and use the South Beach Marina to launch from to go crabbing or fishing.
As residents of The Lightkeeper's Inn, Bill & Cheryl offer their home for you to enjoy. Relax in the privacy of your suite, on one of our 4 decks, or come on up to the main living area, where you always have an opportunity to visit with us. Cheryl is a Newport native and is a wealth of information on where to go and what to do. She will also share stories of the area with you.

Chitwood : An Oregon Ghost Town Near Newport
Just before you get to Newport, on the side of the road is a huge covered bridge at a spot in the road called Chitwood. When I drove by last week (October 2014) the bridge was being renovated. But one thing that won't change it the history and there is only one person who can tell it like it is. Watch.
Newport 2013
Mom and Dad dropped down to Oregon in the middle of September to visit some friends in Bend during the Labor Day week. Upon their return we decided to spend a couple of nights over on the coast just to get away and see something different.
We stayed at the Shilo Inn, an aging but quaint seaside hotel with nothing but ocean views from every room. A majority of our weekend was spent walking from location to location including Nye Beach and downtown Newport. Our first night's dinner was at Nana's Irish Pub.
The next day we visited The Kite Company, a local kite shop on highway 101, for a repair to one of our kites. Later that afternoon we attempted to sail it in the almost too calm air along the beach near our hotel. It soared for a while but we really had very little time flying it since there was not suitable gusts to utilize.
For lunch we supped at the Rogue River Brewery (visited in a previous video and sampled their wide variety of ales and lagers along with an excellent lunch.
We walked along the fisherman's pier and observed the locals crabbing, and that's when I realized that when I'm with my parents we tend to gyrate towards people who crab (
Thanks again, Mom and Dad, for spending time with us and we had a wonderful weekend.

Mo's Restaurant Celebrates 70 Years on the Oregon Coast
When Mohava Marie Niemi, Newport’s crusty, big hearted chain smoking mother died in 1992 at the age of 79, she left behind much more than a successful business and a trunk full of colorful anecdotes. Her greatest legacy, perhaps, was the work ethic she instilled in her family, which survives to this day.
Paul Newman, Joann Wodward, Henry Fonda, Lee Remmick and the entire cast and crew of “Sometimes A Great Notion,” the movie made from author Ken Kesey’s novel, became friends of Mo’s while filming in Newport. Mo, herself, was in a scene which took place in the Bay Haven Inn, renamed The Snag in the film.
Senator Robert Kennedy, who came through Newport on his presidential campaign tour in May of 1968, liked the chowder so much he took a couple of buckets with him on the plane and even invited Mo to join them for the trip to Los Angeles. She politely declined, and then bitterly regretted her decision. Shortly thereafter Kennedy was shot to death after a campaign speech at the Ambassador Hotel.
Mo and her restaurants have been and continue to be written up in dozens of newspapers and magazines around the United States. In 1999 Mo’s Clam Chowder was a featured entrée at the first luncheon ever held in the Smithsonian Institute, which celebrated “Best American Regional Foods.” She was very proud of the notoriety, but most of all grateful for the restaurants’ popularity, and she gave back graciously to her community. Mo gave of herself completely, promoting “Newport the Friendliest,” with her time, energy and money. That legacy continues to this day in her granddaughter Cindy McEntee. For her “outstanding development of her business and her contributions to the community” Cindy was awarded the 2001 1st runner up, National Small Business Person of the Year from President George W. Bush. Cindy continues to run the business today along with the help of her daughter Gabrielle and son Dylan. In January of 2005 Cindy published a book, Mo’s On The Waterfront, Tradition Turned Legend to honor the life of her beloved grandmother and to celebrate the business she created over 55 years ago.
A trip to the Oregon Coast is not complete without a stop at Mo’s. We look Forward to serving you!

Living in Newport Beach: the Dory Fishing Fleet
Beside the Newport Pier, the Dory Fishing Fleet is still going strong -- since 1891! It has been designated a historical landmark by the Newport Beach Historical Society. You can still buy fish from next to the pier, at the Dory Fishing Fleet Market--if you do go, show up early in the morning; they sell out fast!

S. Beach Camping Newport 4th July 2010
Camping at S. Beach State campground in Newport Oregon over the July 4th weekend. Visited the Yaquina Head lighthouse and viewed some great tide pools. Played around at the South Jetty beach with a few SUP (stand up paddleboards) and enjoyed the great weather.
