2018 04 24 The Irish in Newport The Great Collection of 1881
In the most recent U.S. Census survey, 81% of the adult population self-identified a specific ancestry and 10% wrote that they were “Irish.” For Newport County the Irish percentage was 24% and for Newport 27%. How did the strong sense of identity among the Newport Irish persist over generations in the face of anti-Irish sentiment in the 19th and 20th centuries, an identity that continues today?
St. Mary’s Church anchored the Irish community. The magnificent church building, dedicated in 1852, and its school required the financial support of the parishioners, many of whom were recent immigrants, working class, and not wealthy. In 1881, the Pastor, Fr. Philip Grace D.D., organized the “Great Collection of 1881” and published a 27-page report listing parishioners by name and address, the amount pledged, and what they actually contributed.
Linking the “Great Collection” names and addresses to the 1880 Census data provides a fascinating view of the Newport Irish in the period after the Civil War. On what streets and in which houses did they live? What were their occupations and how generous were their contributions to the “Great Collection of 1881”? A $20 contribution may seem modest today, but if you worked as a laborer for $1 a day at the Fall River Line shipyard on Washington Street and earned $24 dollars a month, working 6 days a week, the contribution represented a month’s income.

Havelock Street Presbyterian Church Newport 2018
Havelock Street Presbyterian Church
Portrait of a small Welsh church community
by Ron McCormick
2009
Thirty years after the fateful Chartist uprising the 19th century South Wales town of Newport was changing fast as sweeping industrialisation and its growth as a coal exporter caused the population of the town to explode. Numbering under a thousand in 1800 the population multiplied to to over 25,000 by 1865, creating the largest town in Wales. People from all over Britain, from the Midlands, Scotland and Ireland flocked to Newport and the South Wales Valleys in search of work.
The congregation of this new church was established in 1863 to provide for the expanding English-speaking community of the town. It's formation, a reaction to the increasing loss of members from Ebenezer, the mother church, caused by its strong Calvinistic Methodist tradition with services delivered solely in the Welsh language.
Havelock Street Presbyterian Church has acquired a proud history spanning one hundred and sixty five years and in 1987 was the birthplace of the Boys Brigade in Wales. The present volume records some of that history and, through a series of intriguing photographs, gives us an insight to the Victorian elegance of the chapel and its ageing but devoted congregation.
