Michael Chambers: The Railway Bridge In Newport
Michael Chambers gives a short history of the Railway Bridge at a historical tour of Newport, Co Mayo, Ireland as part of the Annual Newport Festival. 05.08.2017.
Centre piece of Newport, the railway viaduct that once carried steam trains through Newport on their way to Achill, is now preserved as a walkway for native and visitor, to enjoy. It spans the Blackoak River, contains seven arches and cost £7,640 to build. The first train crossed the bridge in February, 1894, and it was finally closed in September 1937.
The viaduct is constructed of local red sandstone with some limestone facings. At night both it and the nearby 19th century road bridge are flood lit as is St. Patrick's Church on Barrack Hill above the town.
Over 1000 men were employed in he late 1880's during the construction of the rail line from Westport to Achill Island. Given the nature of the hilly, boggy drumlin countryside, much cutting, filling and building of small stone bridges was necessary and today these provide an architecture that enhances the countryside.
Much of the railway station is no longer standing but the present Oratory Chapel was once part of a busy bustling station. Two rail tunnels to the south also remind one of the Midland and Great Western Railway that once passed through Newport.

Great Western Greenway (Newport to Mullranny)
This is what I got up to for a few hours on Saturday....The World Class Great Western Greenway (Newport - Mullranny Section) is an 18km traffic free cycling and walking facility which primarily follows the line of the famous Newport / Mulranny Railway, which closed in 1937. Its development has been made possible by agreement of local landowners who have allowed permissive access to users to pass through their lands.

Newport is a civil parish and the county town of the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England, in the United Kingdom. Newport is situated slightly to the north of the centre of the Island, at the head of the navigable section of the River Medina, which flows northward to Cowes and the Solent, and on which the town has a quay.
Newport since the 1960s has acquired new shopping facilities, a pedestrianised central square, and through road traffic redirected off many of the narrow streets. Newport Quay has been redeveloped with art galleries such as the Quay Arts Centre and new flats converted from old warehouses. The Queen Victoria Memorial was designed by local architect Percy Stone (1856–1934).
Newport is the principal town of the Isle of Wight. Transport connections link all major towns to Newport; it is the main shopping centre and location for public services on the Island. The main A3020 and A3054 roads converge as Medina Way between the busy roundabouts at Coppins Bridge and St Mary's Hospital.
Newport railway station was the hub of the Island's rail network until the mid-20th century, but it closed in 1966 and the site is now occupied by the A3020 Medina Way dual carriageway. The River Medina runs through Newport; north of its confluence with the Lukely Brook at the town's quay it becomes a navigable tidal estuary.
Seaclose Park in Newport, on the east bank of the River Medina, has since 2002 been the location for the revived Isle of Wight Music Festival, held annually. Newport is home to the Postal Museum, possibly the largest private collection of vintage postal equipment and post boxes in the world
Newport bus station is the town's central bus terminus, with all routes in the town serving it. Newport is the hub of the Southern Vectis network, with routes from across the Island terminating there. Wightbus also operate services.

In 1968 two E class Steam locomotives were being used for shunting duties at Newport Railway Workshops. The E class have side tanks and cylinders inside the frame. The scenes of the E and veteran train at Spencer Street were in 1969. The centenary of electrification will be in 2019

Flying over Newport (MV Dirona Channel)
Video from a vantage point 50 to 100 feet over Bannister's Wharf and the downtown area of Newport, with some aerial shots of Dirona at Newport Yachting Center. If you look closely, you'll see the drone was occasionally under attack by a few birds apparently not encouraging a new bird to join the neighborhood. The Newport marinas are just getting ready for the summer season, but still aren't formally open yet. It's fun being the only boat in a downtown Newport marina.

A trip on Newport's new footbridge 15.1.11
This is my first trip in the new footbridge at Newport. Newport Station has a lot of Ruth announcements and welsh announcements celebrating the number of delays due to the road vehicle striking a bridge. We were held back for about 3 quarters of an hour.
Anyway, enjoy the footbridge
