The Cornish Challenge - Newquay Activity Centre
The Cornish challenge is Cornwall's answer to the Highland Games. Groups are split into teams and take part in a selection of California Beach style games related to surf skills and lifeguarding. Our stunning arena is the golden sands of Fistral beach and the challenges are mainly physical but also have aspects of problem solving as a group.
They include a paddle relay race, ultimate Frisbee, the surfboard tunnel, the lifeguards' flag sprint, beach volleyball and finally Aqua Targets, which is our test of throwing skill and holding your nerve to decide the eventual winner. Each team is assigned a minimum of one instructor who is a trained lifeguard and surf instructor and is charged with putting the team through their paces.

Cornwall Castaway - Newquay Activity Centre
Hi I’m Rob Barber and I’m director of the Newquay Activity Centre.
We are two time winners of the Cornwall Tourism Awards and we are number one ranked on Trip Advisor.
I am here today to talk to you about our brand new activity, The Cornwall Castaway.
So, what happens in this activity? We re-enact an important historical moment that happened 100 years ago.
100 years ago, right at the end of our headland on the Cribbar reef, a ship was getting wrecked on the reef and the lifeboat men from Newquay rallied together to save that ship.
Some of those men decided that they didn’t want to go out and deemed it too dangerous, but a maverick crew decided to go and try to save the folk that were going down in the ship wrecked vessel.
As soon as the lifeboat hit the water, it capsized.
It was crazy high seas and it was freezing cold as it was December.
Luckily for the lifeboat crew they knew the coast and managed to swim using the currents and the ocean swell and get themselves washed into a cave called the Tea Caverns.
They managed to survive for 3 days and 3 nights by foraging and living off the fat of the land and keeping warm together before they escaped the cave and got back to the town and were recognised as heroes for their gallant bravery.
So this leads us to what we are doing today.
We are going to relive that by doing some Coasteering, some climbing, some scrambling, some caving, some jumping into deep water plunge pools, we are going to go into some caves and create a fire and learn some foraging skills.
Once we have created our fire we are going to do a little bit of cooking. We are then going to escape that situation using one of our Super Stand Up Paddle Boards which is the nearest thing we have to a modern day raft and we are then going to paddle to safety.
Do you think that you have the minerals to do it?
Well you tell me.
Get in touch with us, it’s the most awesome group activity Newquay has to offer.

How to make surfing in the winter easy? Newquay Activity Centre Surf School
ISA coach and 3x national champion Johnny Fryer shares a few pointers on how to enjoy cold water surfing as much as possible.
1.Splash out on a good quality 5/3mm wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood.
2.Always hang your wetsuit out to dry the day before. If you have 2, rotate them so you always have a dry one.
3. Don’t eat just prior to going in. You will feel colder, and be more likely to get cramp.
4.Have a good, dynamic warm up.
5. Keep busy, paddle hard and catch lots of waves to stay warm.
6.Arrange clothes, towels shoes etc for your return, so you can get dressed ASAP.
7.Shortboarders. A little more volume in your boards will make life easier as you will be heavier in all that neoprene.
If you'd like to improve you surfing, why not join one of our surf coaching weekends or surf coaching holidays?
