Newquay, Cornwall
Newquay, Tewinblustri in Cornish, is a popular seaside town on the North Cornish coast. It is situated to the left of Newquay Bay and is in between the Gannel Estuary and Porth Beach. Originally a fishing town, Newquay is now, like many coastal towns, popular with tourists. The town is known as the UK's Surf Capital due to it being home to Fistral Beach, where waves can reach between 6 and 8 feet.
There are seven beaches in Newquay. These are Fistral Beach, Little Fistral Beach, Newquay Harbour Beach (originally part of Towan Beach), Towan Beach, Great Western Beach, Tolcarne Beach and Lusty Glaze Beach. The town is also home to a zoo, Newquay Zoo, and an aquarium, the Blue Reef Aquarium, which is situated next to Towan Beach, a beach famous for its house on the island.
There has been something on the site of the present town since the Bronze Age (around 3,000 years ago) and Bronze Age barrows can be seen on a grassy area known as Barrowfields, just above Tolcarne Beach. The town, however, didn't really start to become big until the Medieval period and it wasn't until the 19th century when the town became much bigger by the introduction of the railway which was operated by Great Western Railway, hence the name of Great Western Beach.
Newquay has a population of approximately 30,000 people, which has grown by around 10,000 in the last 10 years.
Getting to Newquay is relatively easy as the A392 and A3075 bypass the town. There is a train station in Newquay, although this isn't part of the mainline and you'll need to change at Par to get there and, of course, there are also buses running to the town.

NZ50: Jo Topham - 20 years at Newquay Zoo
Touching on everything from carnivals and lions in tents, Jo talks about what it is like to have worked at Newquay Zoo in this interviews celebrating 50 years of Newquay Zoo.
Working at Newquay Zoo for 20 years you can imagine there would be a few dull days... well apparently not for Jo Topham. Reminiscing about the amazing events thrown at the zoo we learn that they did everything from carnivals to sleepovers - even a Faulty Towers night! (Yes, the picture is included in this video).

Newquay is a town on the north coast of Cornwall, in southwest England. It’s known for sandy Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches, where waves from the Atlantic Ocean create strong surf. On the seafront, the Blue Reef Aquarium features an underwater tunnel going through a coral-reef tank with pufferfish, sharks and rays. Further inland, surrounded by tropical gardens, Newquay Zoo is home to lions, wildebeest and sloths.
Newquay is a town, civil parish, seaside resort and fishing port in Cornwall, England, UK. Newquay is situated on the North Atlantic coast of Cornwall approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Bodmin and 12 miles (19 km) north of Truro. Newquay is bounded to the west by the River Gannel and its associated salt marsh, and to the east by the Porth Valley. Newquay has been expanding inland (south) since it was founded.
Newquay has been a major tourist destination for more than a century, principally on account of its coastline and nine long and accessible sandy beaches, including Fistral. Around 22,000 people live in Newquay, but the population can increase to 100,000 or more in the summer because Newquay has a large stock of holiday accommodation.
Newquay is also known for the Run to the Sun event, which always takes place during the public holiday on the last weekend in May at Trevelgue Holiday Park. People visit the town in Volkswagen camper vans, Beetles and other custom cars. Established in sections throughout the 20th century, Trenance Leisure Gardens are sited in a wooded, formerly marshy valley on the quieter edge of Newquay, stretching down to the Gannel Estuary. From the Edwardian era it provided recreation for tourists with walks.
Newquay railway station is the terminus of the Atlantic Coast Line from Par. Newquay Cornwall Airport provides links to many other parts of the United Kingdom. National Express runs coaches from various parts of Great Britain to Newquay. Newquay has a good local bus network: the principal operator is First South West.
