JAMsj Oral History: Matsuoka, Jack
Jack Matsuoka was a teenager when Executive Order 9066 forced his family to leave their home in Watsonville, CA and report to the Salinas Assembly Center. Like most of the Japanese-Americans from the Watsonville area, his family was eventually interned in the Poston Relocation Center in Arizona, where he began creating the illustrations that would eventually lead to his book. After WWII, Jack attended art school, then got drafted into the U.S. Army. Since he had some familiarity with the Japanese language, he was sent to language school, then stationed back in Japan where he worked in intelligence. After his stint the Army, Jack lived in Japan and worked for various major newspapers as a cartoonist. I was surprised to learn that Jack spent many years as a sports cartoonist for Japan Times and various Japanese sports magazines. Apparently sports cartooning was very popular in Japan. He also published his first books of cartoons Rice-Paddy Daddy. He is a member of the National Cartoonist Society

Sugarcreek Depot Walk-around video 3
Now we will show you the inside from outside. Currently, the depot is not open to the public, however, Jerry may open it as a historical center or as a party room for groups once the Age of Steam Roundhouse opens (currently, it is only open for private groups). My friend Grant and I rode the train in 2001, and we will never forget the fun we had riding through the Amish Countryside. It could be relived again once Jerry opens his roundhouse. If there aren't any train rides, maybe at least there can be photo freights on the mainline with permission from the G&W Railroad.
Important announcement from Sugarcreek's The Budget Newspaper Facebook Page:
The GEF is excited to announce our First Annual event An Evening at the Roundhouse on Saturday, September 6. Usually closed to the public, the Roundhouse will be open on this special day with guided tours available from noon to 2:40 p.m. The tours will be given every 20 minutes, advance reservations are needed and can be made by calling the Garaway Central Office at (330) 852-2421. Adult tour tickets are $20 and Children 3-18 are $10.
The evening event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and will include food and beverages from local vendors, music, raffles, auction items, and more while you explore the roundhouse and admire the steam engines up close. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased by calling the Garaway Central Office at (330) 852-2421.
All proceeds support the Garaway Education Foundation and it's mission to provide scholarships for Garaway Seniors pursuing higher education.
Paintings by Malcolm William Clayton
Malcolm William Clayton, painter, poet and linguist, was born in Lancashire in 1954. Gifted in art from a young age, Malcolm self taught and established his artistic identity whilst reading English at Cambridge University and acquiring a PhD in applied linguistics from the University of London.
Dissatisfied with readily available materials and common techniques, Malcolm ultimately developed his own unique medium and style. The resultant effect is mid-way between oil and water colour.
As well as excelling in the world of literature and linguistics, Malcolm was a successful artist whose talent was recognised through major art competitions in both England and Japan where he resided. At his death in 1999 he left approximately one thousand works in total, hundreds of which are already held in both public and private collections.
I, who have cast nets
Needs-must weave the thread
And out of dark,
Catch the silver moment.
(Poem by Malcolm William Clayton at the age of 17)

San Antonio (; from Spanish, Saint Anthony), officially the City of San Antonio, has more than 1.5 million residents. It is the seventh-most populous city in the United States, and the second-most populous city in both Texas and the Southern United States. Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city became the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas in 1731. The area was still part of the Spanish Empire, and later of the Mexican Republic. Today it is the state's oldest municipality. The city's deep history is contrasted with its rapid recent growth during the past few decades: it was the fastest-growing of the top ten largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000. Straddling the regional divide between South and Central Texas, San Antonio anchors the southwestern corner of an urban megaregion colloquially known as the Texas Triangle.
San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County; recent annexations have extended the city's boundaries into Medina County and, for a tiny area near the city of Garden Ridge, into Comal County. Since San Antonio was founded during the Spanish Colonial Era, it has a church (San Fernando Cathedral) in its center, on the main civic plaza in front, a characteristic of many Spanish-founded cities, towns, and villages in Spain and Latin America. As with many other urban centers in the Southwestern United States, areas outside the city limits are sparsely populated.
San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area. Commonly called Greater San Antonio, the metro area has a population of 2,473,974 based on the 2017 U.S. census estimate, making it the 24th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in Texas. Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand.
San Antonio was named by a 1691 Spanish expedition for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13. The city contains five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions, including The Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which together were designated UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2015. Other notable attractions include the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan's Wonderland amusement parks. According to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. It is hom ...
