Trans Canada Hwy 17 from Rossport to Neys Provincial Park
In this episode we drive the Trans Canada Hwy 17 along the North Shore of Lake Superior. We travel from Rossport, through Schreiber and Terrace Bay and arrive at our destination Neys Provincial Park. We enjoyed our walks on the beach, showers and amenities and of course camp made meals and fine bevvies.
Camping, touring and exploring in our 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan Stealth Camper has been a blast. It is the perfect combination for gas mileage and roominess. We are able to easily carry everything we need for weeks of adventure.
In our next episode we will travel from Marathon over the Pukaskwa Peninsula, and arrive at Wawa, to stock up for our night at Pancake Bay Provincial Park.

Hiking and Backpacking the North Shore of Lake Superior
In my opinion the north shore of Lake Superior offers some of the best hiking and backpacking experiences in North America.

Where you can find lots of the gear that I use.
This is a compilation of photos from the many great places to hike and backpack on the north shore of Lake Superior. Some of these places are great for day hikes with kids and others are more strenuous and are ideal for multi day epic adventures. The photos cover at least 15 years of experience on the trails.

The north shore of Lake Superior offers an amazing diversity of glacier scoured bare rock, sandy beaches, cliffs, cobble beaches, river crossings, and great vistas of the largest fresh water lake in the world. Pictographs dot the coastline. If you hunt around you will find ghost towns, abandoned fishing villages and remnants of WWII POW camps. I wish I had taken more pictures there are some nice trips missing from this compilation.
Places visited include (from east to west):
Lake Superior Provincial Park
Pukaskwa National Park
Neys Provincial Park
Slate Islands Provincial Park (mostly a canoe destination but you can hike around on the caribou trails)
Casque Isle Trail
Sleeping Giant Provincial Park
Pigeon River Provincial Park
I made this video partly using 'Focusky' which is new software for me. I like how it allows you to zoom in and out of a presentation and I thought it would be ideal for integrating photos with a map. Some of the arrows aren't pointing exactly where they should and I apologize for that. They seem to move a bit when you compile the video. Most are OK but Pigeon River Provincial Park is actually adjacent to the border with the US.
YouTubers who watch winter camping, canoe trips and bushcraft may recognize 'Wintertrekker' in this video. He is the guy with the red pack. We have done several backpacking trips together. Wintertrekker is a very skilled wilderness traveler and bushcrafter. Check him out here...
Music includes:
1) 'Helpless', a cover of a Neil Young tune by Lori Yates. This appears on 'Out of the Blue: an acoustic tribute to Neil Young'
2) 'Devil's Load', by Lee Harvey Osmond. The album is 'Folk Sinner'.
