Nez Perce National Historical Park
A short clip highlighting the artifacts and displays at the Nez Perce National Historical Park in Lapwai, Idaho. The entire Clearwater River Valley and adjacent Weippe Prairie are brimming with history and are well worth a look.
Lewiston Idaho was actually the first Capital of Idaho and Pierce Idaho was the first actual city in the state. There is a rich history in this area especially in regards to the Nez Perce or Nimipuu Indians. They were incredibly advanced horse breeders for the relatively short time they had utilized horses. The Appaloosa breed is a product of their efforts. They also were the Tribe that fought the US Army in the last great battles of the Indian Wars. Although they ultimately lost the war, they won many decisive battles against the US Calvary. Their superior horsemanship and horses bred specifically for the demands of the region proved invaluable.
This museum and collection of artifacts display their amazing culture and legacy to the region. There are a number of sites belonging to what is known as Nez Perce Historical Trail with sites in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. These sites are associated with the Nez Perce's last great battle. I will include links below for more information on this Tribe and this region's rich and diverse history.
Nez Perce National Historic Park - Across Northern Idaho
The Nez Perce Native Americans had a homeland that covered parts of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They were in fact the largest tribe on the Columbia River Plateau.
Under pressure from the American government, the tribe split into those willing to accept relocation to a reservation in Idaho and those who wanted to retain their original land. In 1877, those that refused to sign the reservation treaty began a trek across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, hoping to reach Canada. The U.S. Army pursued them, and there were 18 battles and skirmishes along the way. Forty miles from the Canadian border, this band of the Nez Perce were defeated.
Nez Perce National Historical Park features 38 sites in the region that are associated with the Nez Perce and their attempt to get to Canada. This slideshow focuses on sites in Northern Idaho.

SUMMARY
=======
The Nez Perce National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park comprising 38 sites located throughout the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, which included traditional aboriginal lands of the Nez Perce people. The sites are strongly associated with the resistance of Chief Joseph and his band, who in June 1877 took off from Oregon in an attempt to reach freedom in Canada and avoid being forced on to a reservation. They were pursued by U.S. Army cavalry forces and fought numerous skirmishes against them.
The park was established in 1965, and a museum was opened at the park headquarters in Spalding, Idaho, in 1983.
The 38 sites span three main ecoregions, covering a wide range of elevations and climate. Numerous animal species inhabit the park, including several that are considered sensitive.

SUMMARY
=======
The Nez Perce National Historic Trail follows the route taken by a large band of the Nez Perce Indian tribe in 1877 during their attempt to flee the U.S. Cavalry and get to Canada, to avoid being forced on to a reservation. The 1,170-mile (1,883 km) trail was created in 1986 as part of the National Trails System Act and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The trail traverses through portions of the U.S. states of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana and connects 38 separate sites across these four states that commemorate significant events that took place as the Nez Perce tried to escape capture by the U.S. Cavalry. The sites are part of the National Park Service's Nez Perce National Historical Park, managed overall by the National Park Service, with some sites managed by local and state affiliated organizations.
