10 Things to Know about solar eclipse
A solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and when the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun.
Music:
1. What time is the eclipse, and what if it rains?
In the Quad-Cities, the eclipse will begin at 11:48 a.m., peak at 1:14 p.m. and end at 2:38 p.m. There is a chance of clouds and rain. If that happens, the sky will simply appear darker than normal.
2. What is an eclipse?
That is easy to think about, said Chris Like, director of the planetarium at Bettendorf High School. The moon goes around the Earth, and the Earth goes around the sun. In a rare celestial coincidence, the moon's shadow blocks out the sun for us here on Earth.
3. Why should we be excited?
This is the first total solar eclipse in 100 years that will be visible across the United States, said Lee Carkner, director of the John Deere Planetarium at Augustana College, Rock Island.
4. Why are eclipses so rare?
One might think an eclipse could happen quite often, but the moon's orbit is tilted a bit, so it's hard to match up perfectly. Mostly the sun is too high or too low and that's why we don't have eclipses all the time, Like said.
5. How should we view the eclipse?
Safely. The best way is to use glasses or devices with proper filters, Carkner said, suggesting that many people may suffer lasting eye injuries today in America. Glasses are sold out in many locations, but Carkner said an easy, inexpensive way to ensure safe viewing is to use a pinhole projector. For an example, visit timeanddate.com/eclipse/make-pinhole-projector.html
6. Will we see a total eclipse?
No. Our region is in the 90 percent range of eclipse. Scientists, like Carkner, are traveling to southern Illinois to see the eclipse in totality. We are taking a field trip, with eclipse viewers, binoculars, all property filtered, he said. We are hoping for the best.
7. Good eclipse websites?
Information is widely available online, but here is an interactive map from NASA: eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/index.html
The Old Farmer's Almanac has established its Great American Eclipse Central with loads of information: bit.ly/2wXPdfm
8. Where should we watch it locally?
The eclipse can be seen anywhere in the Quad-Cities, but several places are sponsoring events, including nearly every public library. The Scott County Public Library in Eldridge, for example, is hosting an Eclipse Picnic, from noon to 2 p.m. Bring your own lunch, and glasses will be provided.
Also: The Putnam Museum, Davenport, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the theater; viewing party from noon to 2:30 p.m. in Faye's Field, adjoining the Bettendorf Public Library; Bettendorf Family Museum, party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Davenport library, party from noon to 2 p.m. in the park by the Eastern branch, 6000 Eastern Ave.; Moline Public Library, viewing party 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3210 41st St.; Rock Island Public Library, viewing party from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 30/31 branch, 3059 30th St., Rock Island.
9. What about the animals?
The Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley is hosting an event to view the behavior of nocturnal animals during the eclipse. Families are invited from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be interesting to see how the animals react as day suddenly turns to night, said Joel Vanderbush, curator of conservation and education at the zoo.
10. Take a selfie!
Got your glasses? Take a selfie with them on, and your location, and send it to the Quad-City Times: Use social media hashtag: #solareclipseqc. Or e-mail the selfie to prugg@qctimes.com.
Like, from the planetarium at Bettendorf High School, is on the Glynn's Creek Golf Course today in rural Eldridge. He coaches the Bulldog boys' golf team in the Lancer Invitational.
We'll have to stop play for a while as it will be too dark to see the ball, he said, noting he is most concerned about young golfers, all over the course, looking at the eclipse without the proper eye protection.
But the eclipse will provide a teachable moment, Like said.

A year in Logan's life spent riding the train at the Metro Richmond Zoo. Also, it's a bumpy ride on that train.
