Best Things to Do in Mandalay in Three Days, Myanmar
Hi guys, I’m Péricles Rosa. Today I’m going to show you how to get the best out of three days in Mandalay.
One of the best things to do in Mandalay is to explore the city by bike. Mandalay is a flat city and its streets are laid out in a grid, so it’s almost impossible to get lost.
On a bike, you can get a better sense of the city and visit some of the most important points of interest.
I went to Maharani Buddha temple. To enter the temple, you have to take your shoes off and cover your knees, so I had to wear a longyi, a kind of skirt that is very popular in Myanmar.
This temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country.
The Buddha statue, the most revered in Myanmar, is 3.8m tall and weighs 6.5 tons. To pay their respects, male devotees regularly apply gold leaf to the statue.
In the temple complex, there are also six large bronze Khmer statues, taken from Angkor Wat in Cambodia. You should put Maharani Buddha Temple on your things to do in Mandalay list.
After leaving the Mahamuni temple, I went to the stone-carving district along Sagaing-Mandalay Road.
It was fascinating to see the skilled craftsmen and –women using electrical tools to carve and sculpt the marble into beautifully delicate Buddha statues, before polishing and painting them. Visiting the stone-carving district is definitely one of the best things to do in Mandalay.
Another advantage of exploring by bike is discovering places or things you’d never imagined. This tower is part of Ma Soe Yein, the biggest monastery in Mandalay.
On to another monastery, this time the Shwenandan monastery, built in 1878 out of teak wood in the traditional Burmese style.
This was my favourite point of interest in Mandalay – the elaborate, intricate and very detailed carving work is awe-inspiring!
At the end of the afternoon, the best place to be in the city is Mandalay Hill. You can see for miles and the sunset is stunning. Watching the sunset in Mandalay Hill is one of the top things to do in Mandalay.
To finish a long first day, I visited Kyauk Tan Gyi, a pagoda that is colourfully lit up at night and has one of the biggest marble Buddha statues in the whole of Myanmar.
On my second day, I started off by hiring a motor taxi to take me to Amarapura, a township on the outskirts of Mandalay. There, at the Mahagandhayon Monastery, I witnessed the monks’ lunchtime ritual – a spectacular sight, with a thousand monks in burgundy robes lining up to collect their food donations.
To get to Sagging, my next destination, I took a bus but I was not prepared for what turned up! Holding on to the back of an overloaded truck was a bit uncomfortable and probably dangerous but I had a lot of fun.
Upon arrival, I visited the Kaunghmudan pagoda, a large temple on the outskirts of the town, before hitchhiking to Sagaing Hill.
My first stop was the U Min Thonze pagoda. This pagoda is stunningly colourful.
I visited some other points of interest in Sagaing. The city is famous for the hundreds of white pagodas, gold stupas and numerous monasteries that dot its hilly landscape.
Last stop in Sagging was the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda.
In Mandalay, I visited a gold leaf workshop on the spur of the moment, where I saw the entire gold leaf making process. 12g of solid gold from the north of Mandalay and some bamboo paper are put in layers into a box made from deer leather. The box is then beaten until the gold is 0.0003mm thick and the gold leaf is formed.
On my last day in Mandalay, I took yet another form of transport, this time a ferry, to Mingun, about 11km away.
The principal tourist attraction is Mingun Pahtodangyi, a monumental unfinished pagoda.
Not far from the pagoda is the Mingun bell.
Nearby is the Hsinbyome pagoda, which is built in a very different style from all the other pagodas in Myanmar. I loved this very striking and distinctive pagoda! Taking a tour to Mingun is one of the top things to do in Mandalay area.
Time to go back to Mandalay and visit one of the most popular points of interest and historically important sites in the city, Mandalay Palace.
Very close to the palace is Sandamuni Paya, with its 1774 white stupas surrounding a central gilded pagoda. In front of Sandamuni is the Kuthodaw pagoda, built in a very similar style, where you can walk in between the stupas. Kuthodaw is very picturesque and undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Mandalay.
Then I went to Amarapura again, this time to watch the sunset over the U Bein bridge.
To finish my three days in Mandalay, I attended the world-famous Moustache Brothers’ show. Watching the Moustache Brothers’ show is definitely a memorable way to end your trip to Mandalay.

Mingun-Mandalay
Mingun is a town in Sagaing Region, northwest Myanmar (Burma), located 11 km up the Ayeyarwady River on the west bank from Mandalay. Its main attraction is the ruined Mingun Pahtodawgyi.
The Mingun temple is a monumental uncompleted stupa began by King Bodawpaya in 1790. It was not completed, due to an astrologer claiming that, once the temple was finished, the king would die. The completed stupa would have been the largest in the world at 150 metres (490 ft). Huge cracks are visible on the structure from the earthquake of 23 March 1839. Like many large pagodas in Myanmar, a pondaw paya or working model of the stupa can be seen nearby.
King Bodawpaya also had a gigantic bell cast to go with his huge stupa, the Mingun Bell weighing 90 tons, and is today the largest ringing bell in the world. The weight of the bell in Burmese measurement, is 55,555 viss or peiktha (1 viss = 1.63 kg), handed down as a mnemonic Min Hpyu Hman Hman Pyaw, with the consonants representing the number 5 in Burmese astronomy and numerology.
The Mingun Bell is a bell located in Mingun, Sagaing Region, Myanmar. It is located approximately 11 km (6.8 mi) north of Mandalay on the western bank of the Irrawaddy River. It was the heaviest functioning bell in the world at several times in history. At 90 tons, the Mingun Bell reigned as the largest ringing bell in the world until 2000, when it was eclipsed by the 116-ton Bell of Good Luck at the Foquan Temple, Pingdingshan, Henan, China.
Mingun Pahtodawgyi:
The Mingun temple is a monumental uncompleted stupa began by King Bodawpaya in 1790. It was not completed, due to an astrologer claiming that, once the temple was finished, the king would die.[citation needed] The completed stupa would have been the largest in the world at 150 metres (490 ft). Huge cracks are visible on the structure from the earthquake of 23 March 1839. Like many large pagodas in Myanmar, a pondaw paya or working model of the stupa can be seen nearby.
Hsinphyumae Pagoda:
Just a couple of hundred yards from the great stupa and bell lies the beautiful white Hsinbyume or Myatheindan Pagoda with a distinctive architectural style modelled after the mythical Mount Meru (Myinmo taung), built in 1816 by Bodawpaya's grandson and successor Bagyidaw and dedicated to the memory of his first consort Princess Hsinbyume (Lady of the White Elephant, granddaughter of Bodawpaya, 1789--1812) who died in childbirth.
Staying at the Little Yangon Hostel
Little Yangon Hostel is a good place to stay in downtown Yangon near the Rangoon Tea House albeit its a little far from bigger concentrations of places for foreigners to eat (e.g. Junction City). I had stayed here in April 2016 - they have a decent Myanmar style breakfast that varies daily. One bed in 8-Bed dormitory with shared Bathroom from Wednesday night until Tuesday morning came to $12.94 + $64.70 total when booked on Agoda.
- 6 Bed Dorms and 8 Bed Dorms
- Lounge Area

Secret Villa Tour - Luxury Week in Mandalay | #VLOG21
Last week, I showed you guys my short video about Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort with the most beautiful view of Mandalay Hill.
Well, this place is unreal and I found a greater home for me and my boyfriend for a week in Mandalay in a secret garden like Alice in Wonderland. It is called, treatment villa itself, because you can get spa and massage just in your Villa. How cool it is!!!!! It is quiet, isolated and surrounded by nature and cozy for us. The well-decorated ancient style bath tub and outdoor shower is definitely my favorite.
Please let me know what you thought of the video! And which part was your favorite! Would you like more hotel or villa tours like this? Let me know!

Myanmar Food at Feel Restaurant - One of the BEST Restaurants in Yangon, Myanmar for Burmese Food!
Feel Myanmar is a well known restaurant in Yangon, Myanmar, that serves just about every type of Burmese / Myanmar food you can imagine. Read my full post here:
When I asked on a video about some suggestions for where to eat on my latest trip to Yangon, Myanmar, probably the most mentioned restaurant I was recommended was Feel Myanmar - it’s kind of like a Yangon institution, a well known restaurant that has everything type of food you can imagine - it’s local, and attracts a huge range of both Yangon residents and visitors. When I first arrived, I have to admit that I was a little on the disappointed side, mainly because I didn’t see the curries at first. Ying and I took a table outside, and the waiter handed us a menu - but I didn’t want a menu, I wanted the Burmese food curry buffet. So I asked the waiter, and he nodded, and led me into a room on the left side of the restaurant.
What I faced was one of the most spectacular displays of pre-made curry I’ve seen anywhere. There literally must have been hundreds of different prepared Myanmar dishes, all ready to be ordered, not to mention an army of staff waiting to serve you whatever you please. I have to admit that I went a little crazy, pointing to as many dishes as I could, without realizing how many dishes I had ordered - I was quite excited. The food all looks outstanding.
After ordering all the dishes, our waiter then served all the Burmese / Myanmar foods to our table. Probably my favorite dish of the meal was the mutton curry, a beautiful blend of softly curried mutton, with a marvelous blend of spices. It was a little oily, but the flavor was unbelievable. I also ordered some braised pork belly, which was cooked quite plain, but it was so tasty, mainly from the sweet onions it was cooked with. All the other dishes at Feel Myanmar restaurant were excellent too.
I think Feel Myanmar Restaurant in Yangon has found a great balance of variety, delicious food, and still keeps their cuisine quite local and authentic. One thing that really stands out is that they literally have hundreds of dishes for you to choose some - so believe me - you won’t run out of things to order. I think it’s a great introduction to eating Burmese / Myanmar food, when you’re in Yangon - it’s a place you should definitely eat at.
Feel Myanmar Food Restaurant, Yangon

UNIQUE Myanmar STREET FOOD TOUR in Yangon
I have a very unique Myanmar's Street Food tour. Myanmar Foods are really delicious that they really cook well. I have tried five dishes in Yangon which is the biggest city in Myanmar. You can try some of them if you go to Myanmar. But two things seriously you must try is Pickled Tea Leaf Salad and Mohinga. Specially Pickled Tea Leaf Salad can go really well with beer.
1. Pickled Tea Leaf Salad (Lahpet)
Location :
It is very unique food because they use tea as a salad. Fermented Pickled Tea with nuts and vegetables has a very unique taste.
2. A typical Myanmar meal
Location :
If you order the main dish like meat or fish, you would get side dishes like salad, soup, and vegetables for free. You can have it for lunch or dinner. Usually, Myanmar cooks well that always it has good taste.
3. Noodle Salad
Location :
It is served with salad, vegetable, and a few different seasonings. This dish is good for a snack cause it is a light meal.
4. Pork Offal Skewers (Wet Thar Dote Htoe)
Location :
It is pork offal cooked in light soy sauce. The meat placed on the stick includes the internal organs of the pig including its intestine, liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lungs, tongue and even the skin and cartilage. At first, you dip the stick into a soup and then dip into chili sauce. Soup has a really deep flavor.
5. Mohinga
Location :
It is a rice noodle and fish soup. It is the national dish you must try if you go to Myanmar. Usually, it is eaten for breakfast. Every region cooks the different way that if you travel whole Myanmar, you can taste different Mohinga.

Myanmar has been on my hit list of places to travel for nearly a decade. I had dreams of exploring this place before it was open to the public, though I'm glad I got to visit it at this point in time. It's certainly developed enough where you can stay at a comfy place. My partner and I had 10 days to explore. Being the typical American I decided to hit as many places as we could. We were told that Mandalay was worth a day, so that's what we did. 18hrs in Mandalay. These were the highlights of our trip. There are so many more things to explore, and many times where I was too tired to be the cameraman and host, but I'm glad I got to take people with me on this journey.

Mandalay is a city and former royal capital in northern Myanmar (formerly Burma) on the Irrawaddy River. In its center is the restored Mandalay Palace from the Konbaung Dynasty, surrounded by a moat. Mandalay Hill provides views of the city from its summit, which is reached by a covered stairway. At its foot, the Kuthodaw Pagoda houses hundreds of Buddhist-scripture-inscribed marble slabs.
The Hsinbyome pagoda, which is built in a very different style from all the other pagodas in Myanmar. I loved this very striking and distinctive pagoda! Taking a tour to Mingun is one of the top things to do in Mandalay area.
Time to go back to Mandalay and visit one of the most popular points of interest and historically important sites in the city, Mandalay Palace.
