African Community Fishing Event - Long Version - Niger River, Mali
This shows a small village community fishing event on the Niger River floodplain in Mali, West Africa (Mande region). Shows the variety of species caught and techniques used. Language is Bambara/Malinke. Check out my book about traditional fishing and hunting in Mali:
This is one in a series of annual fishing events on the floodplain ponds of the upper Niger River. This is a small one -- some events attract thousands of people from all over the region. The ponds are managed by a pond master who decides which day the event is going to be. No one is allowed to fish in these ponds until this day.
The ponds are connected to the river and each other in a network during the flood season. Some fish migrate in from the river to spawn, and juveniles rear for some period -- and some fish are resident and can survive in mud when things dry out. In any event, this fishery has been going on for hundreds of years. Their particular style of management appears to be sustainable. It helps too, of course, that the river is not dammed and diked, so has a naturally connected and functioning floodplain.
