Brazil, part 2: Beaches, Cuisine, and Music of Salvador [WORLD CITIZEN]
Everybody knows about the beautiful beaches in Brazil but not everybody knows about the stories behind them.
A small stretch of sand in the Salvador neighborhood of Baha is routinely ranked on the world's top beaches list. Porto da Barra is a bustling neighborhood beach with a strong tie to Brazil's history. It was one of the first places Europeans landed when they came to this land, making it an integral part of Salvador's identity.
Similar to the beach culture, music is one of the pillars of this community. A local band called Biana System is one of the strongest examples of cross-cultural exchange in the form of music combining reggae, hip-hop, rock and roll, and traditional local sounds for an energy-filled musical experience you have to see to believe.
For an unexpected look at the local sports culture, we headed to a skateboard park to speak with Nilzete Santos, the owner of Afrotours in Salvador. She explained the changing tide of culture hitting the historic city.

Kwame Dixon – Afro-Politics and Civil Society in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil
Skip ahead to main speaker at 4:55
Afro-civil society in Brazil is engaged in several important political projects: first, challenging hierarchies of political exclusion; second constructing new forms of citizenship by claiming new rights; third, testing recently enacted antidiscrimination and affirmative action measures; fourth, struggling to reclaim land rights both rural and urban; and fifth, seeking to increase political participation and representation on the local, state, and federal levels. Using Salvador as a case study, this talk spotlights and amplifies the democratic challenges and possibility of peoples of African descent in the Americas.

Visiting Brazil is always better when you already know people. My good friend took really good care of me. Rest assured, Brazilians can also be very hospitable, just be polite and don't be flashy.

AFRICAN BRAZILIAN RELIGION - ENGLIGH SUBTITLES
Candomblé at a glance (BBC)
Candomblé is a religion based on African beliefs which is particularly popular in Brazil. It is also practised in other countries, and has as many as two million followers (?... I believe there are way more than 2 million... Francisco Lacaz Ruiz, the video maker)
The religion is a mixture of traditional Yoruba, Fon and Bantu beliefs which originated from different regions in Africa. It has also incorporated some aspects of the Catholic faith over time.
A religion which combines elements of many religions is called a syncretic religion.
Enslaved Africans brought their beliefs with them when they were shipped to Brazil during the slave trade.
The name Candomblé means 'dance in honour of the gods'.
Practitioners of Candomblé believe in one all powerful God called Oludumaré who is served by lesser deities. These deities are called orixas. (They can also be called voduns and inkices.)
Candomblé practitioners believe that every person has their own individual orixa which controls his or her destiny and acts as a protector.
Music and dance are important parts of Candomblé ceremonies. Specially choreographed dances are performed by worshippers to enable them to become possessed by the orixas.
There is no concept of good or bad in Candomblé. Each person is only required to fulfil his or her destiny to the fullest, regardless of what that is.
Candomblé is an oral tradition and therefore has no holy scriptures.
The first official temple was founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Salvador, Bahia in Brazil.
The ceremony depicted on the video is a Xirê, a praisal to the 16 more common Orishas that goes for about 6 or 7 hours and is open to the non initiated persons. In the days preceding the Xirê, a series of internal rituals take place at the Axé or Ilê (both terms used to refer to each House of Candomblé)
African pilgrims singing & dancing at Magis Brasil-Salvador da Bahia.
This was captured one early morning during the Magis Brasil gathering at Salvador da Bahia.
Pilgrims from the African delegations (Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Sudan, Tanzania & Zambia) were having their usual briefing meeting when they concluded with this lively song/dance in Swahili: 'Mungu Wetu ni wa Ajabu' (Our God is an Awesome God!).

- VIDEO NOTES -
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is one of the one of the wildest and most exotic places I have every experienced, and the nightlife is nothing short of amazing.
Monday - Pedra do Sal
Our week starts out at the most popular party spot on Monday night in downtown Rio…
Tuesday - Gavea
On Tuesday, join the international crowd at the Zero Zero club in Gavea for a good vibe and great dance music.
Wednesday - Botafogo
Botafogo is the place to be in on Wednesday night as there’s a variety of bars to check out, and you can’t miss Karaoke night at Casa de Matriz!
Thursday - Baixo Gavea
University Students flood the streets of Baixo Gavea on Thursday night to enjoy some drinks and let off a little steam.
Friday - Lapa
The heart of Rio nightlife is in the downtown area of Lapa. You can pre-game in the streets and listen to all the great live music.
From there, head into one of the popular night clubs like Lapa 40 or Rio Scenarium.
And if you have the opportunity, you gotta experience a Monobloco concert at Fundição Progresso.
Saturday - Samba School
Sunday - Beach, Santa Teresa or Urca
And If you’re still alive on Sunday, you have a few options… You could go to the beach and relax, re-hydrate with a coconut water, and watch the sunset from Arpoador, maybe you’d prefer heading to Santa Teresa, eat a traditional Feijoada and watch the sunset from Hotel Santa Teresa, or you can go down to my favorite neighborhood in all of Rio, Urca, to drink a few beers with friends along the Marina and enjoy the views.
Whatever you decide, just make sure you get enough rest to do it all over again tomorrow.
