This painting is part of a series of works inspired by a visit to the Australian butterfly Sanctuary Cairns, Australia. The Southern Cross appears on the Australian flag. The Southern Cross is a constellation of five stars which can only be seen from the southern hemisphere. These stars pinpoint Australia’s geographical location. As a child these stars were pointed out to me in the night sky by my father on many of our wonderful family camping trips.
The butterflies are pinned specimens (I used pearl headed pins). They are pinned to the stars on the Southern Cross. This represents of the fragility of our natural world and the threat of extinction.
In this video I explain how to control shapes using resin and how to create the illusion of depth. I hope you enjoy my video and get some help or inspiration from something I have shown you.
I have no affiliation with any of the products I use in my artworks. These are my choices and I am sure there are many other products which would give the similar results. My process has been learned through experience and watching the many generous people who share their talents on utube and facebook community groups. There are many ways to use these techniques. This is just my way and is by no means the only way to approach these techniques.
Clean up: Wipe all tools with a cloth and small amount of Acetone or alcohol - use gloves.
Safety: Work in a well ventilated room. Always use a chemical mask, safety glasses, cover your body and feet when working with resin- mixing, pouring or sanding. Make sure you sand resin & MDF outside. Do not put the flame of the butane torch too close to resin- use a low flame. Have a fire extinguisher and fire alarm close at hand.

SKYRAIL RAINFOREST CABLEWAY | KURANDA MARKETS | 2019 CAIRNS AUSTRALIA SERIES | EPISODE 4
Welcome back! In episode 4 of our Cairns travel show series we wake up one of the cast at 4:30am to experience Cairns from a different perspective - Barron Gorge National Park, where you can hike through the rainforest up to the ancient Glacier Rock Lookout which offers panoramic views of Cairns - incredible kick start to a day of adventuring in Cairns, Australia.
Great feedback and advice here:
After the surprise wake up call we head back to the house to pick up the rest of the crew for our next adventure - the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway! During our experience the cast get a bit rowdy on the way up and KIRA IS CHALLENGED to face one of her biggest fears. This is continually voted as one of the best things to do in Cairns and we agree! You get to experience a unique perspective of Australia's World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest as you glide above the treetops. We'd recommend getting the Diamond View gondola so you can watch the rainforest canopy glide beneath your feet through your glass bottom gondola. You'll also get the chance to make stops along the way at Red Peak which looks out over ancient landscapes and Barron Falls where you can see the waterfalls plunge through Barron Gorge National Park. The trip is roughly 1.5hrs one way with the option of going return on the gondolas, or opting to get the Kuranda Railway Train back into town.
Lunch:
Kuranda Hotel - Perched up high in the tropical rainforest just a short walk from the heart of the village and both railway stations is this legendary Aussie style pub that has been serving up ice cold beers and dishing up hearty meals for over 100 years. Linked below.
Kuranda Markets:
This little village in the rainforest is world famous for its markets and is your surprise treat when you reach the top of your Skyrail Cableway experience. Find aboriginal artefacts, handmade crafts, book stalls, fortune reading, delicious food, live entertainment from buskers doing their thing as well as some of the finest opals in the world.
Jewellery House Kuranda:
Crystal Cascades:
One of Tropical North Queenslands natural secrets, accessible by self drive. It's one of those places locals would wish to keep to themselves. We went here after our morning at Kuranda for a quick dip and to chuck a few backies! There are secluded freshwater swimming holes hidden in the tropical rainforest which flow into a series of rock pools that are surrounded by huge granite boulders. Chat to the locals to find your way to this beauty!
Special Thanks to:

Daintree Rainforest Observatory Science Camp (Cairns State High School)
Blog post:
A few days ago I was in the Australian rainforest for 4 days. We had the opportunity to stay in a working research station of James Cook University and learn a lot there. In the research station live scientists, technicians and a cook. The station has, among other things, its own water and electricity supply and a large crane with which it is possible for scientists to do research at a height of 50 meters. On the way there we drove to different viewpoints and made a small hike to Mossman Gorge. This gave us a first impression of the fauna and flora. After our arrival, we got a safety briefing, because there, in the free nature, you can meet poisonous and other dangerous animals. The evening ended with a campfire. The next day we programmed heart rate monitors, got information about the orientation and aerodynamics of bats and then set up bat traps. In the evening we could admire three different bats. After a wonderful breakfast in the morning, we left for Jungle Surfing. This means that you slide through the rainforest on a rope slide. After we were back we got a lecture about fireflies and soldered LEDs and other components with an Arduino on a board and programmed the Arduino so that the LEDs blink like fireflies. In the evening we put our components into bottles and shot them with a gas cannon into the night sky. Actually, it was planned for the next morning to use the crane, but the wind was unfortunately too strong. Instead, we fished insects out of a pond, looked at them under a microscope and did another small hike. We were lucky to see a Cassowary. After lunch, we drove home. During the whole camp, I was able to get in contact with Australian students. We played many board and card games and enjoyed the sunrise. Overall the camp was a great experience and I could see another important part of Australia.

TIMESTAMPS BELOW if you want them!! Aaaah Cairns was rather jam-packed! ???? from skydiving to bungee-jumping, white water rafting to scuba diving, I did a lot of things I never thought I'd do! I actually can't recommend skydiving enough! TERRIFYING, but also one of the most incredible experiences. I recommend going with a company you trust, and 100% have travel insurance that covers extreme sports. Bungee jumping was also the one that I tried to back out of TWICE. Not one part of me wanted to do it, but now I'm so proud I managed it. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected and was...... fun????? The scenery was definitely beautiful!

Decision time for The Apartment Hunter - Cairns, Queensland, Australia
I reflect on my inspection of the apartment for sale in Edge Hill, Cairns. While walking back home along Lily Creek I think about the the pros and cons of buying his property. The location was great surrounded by lush rainforest with numerous transport connections to Central Cairns. Were these pros enough to outweigh any cons I had? Watch this video to find out.

Australia - Cairns

Last ever cannibal tribe | 60 Minutes Australia
This really is an adventure into the unknown. We're going back to the Stone Age on the trail of a long lost tribe, the last of the cannibals. And the amazing thing is this isn't ancient history. The tribe really does exist and not all that far from us - our next-door neighbours, really. Nevertheless, it'll take a major expedition to find them. They're called the Korowai and they live just as they did 10,000 years ago, deep in the jungles of West Papua. In 2006, our reporter Ben Fordham set out to search of the Korowai, these primitive warriors who have never seen a white man still believe in witchcraft and still eat human flesh
