The Nihon Minka-en, located within the grounds of Ikuta Ryokuchi Park, is an open-air museum which houses twenty ancient Japanese-style houses from different parts of the country. Ever since its opening in 1967, the park has supported the preservation of these rapidly-disappearing traditional buildings.

Nihon Minkaen (Open Air Folk House Museum)
The Nihon Minkaen in Kawasaki has 25 original historic buildings. They were moved here in 1965 from all over Japan and rebuilt in their original traditional way to preserve them for future generations. Here is a Water Mill from the mid-nineteenth century. Originally from Nagano Prefecture. The mill, mortars and wooden pestles are all intact.

日本民家園（にほんみんかえん）は、神奈川県川崎市多摩区の生田緑地にある日本の古民家を中心とした野外博物館である。正式名称は、川崎市立日本民家園。川崎市内および東日本一帯で伝承されてきた民家、水車小屋などの建物および民具の保存と伝承、活用を目的に整備され、1967年（昭和42年）に開園した。
Nihon Minka-en (日本民家園) is a park in the Ikuta Ryokuchi (生田緑地) Park of Tama-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. On display in the park is a collection of 20 traditional minka (民家) (farm houses) from various parts of Japan, especially thatched-roofed houses from eastern Japan. Of these, nine have received the designation of Important Cultural Assets from the national government. The houses are varied, and include examples from regions of heavy snow, lodgings for travellers, and a theatrical stage. Visitors can see regional variety and differences in construction.
The park is operated by the city of Kawasaki. Admission is free to visitors who are not older than junior-high-school age. The entrance is a fifteen-minute walk from Mukogaoka-Yuen Station on the Odakyu Odawara Line.

Saturday January 14, 2017! Today we went to the Japan-Open Air Folk House Museum also known as Nihon Minkaen. It is a really big museum with a lot to see and the best part is that admission is under $5.
We also went to the Kawasaki Municipal Science Museum which was very small but still interesting and the admission was also under $5 including a planetarium show.

► Nihon Minka-en is a Japanese village/open air museum, that displays traditional Japanese architecture from early- 18th. to mid- 19th. century. The buildings has been collected from rural areas all over east Japan, to be re-assembled in Kanagawa. They are all kept in amazingly great condition, and just about all of them can be seen from the inside as well.
In this video, I show mostly the buildings from Toyama and Gifu prefecture (the ones with the steep triangular shaped roof), as I find them to be the most interesting.
Nihon Minkaen covers a huge area, and if you plan on visiting, make sure to have at least 3 hours at your disposal. It's a great sightseeing spot, giving you the chance to experience ancient Japan first hand.
Easy access from Mukogaoka Yuen St./Odakyu Line. - Enjoy.

先日閉館日で入れなかった生田緑地内にある日本民家園に行って来ました。民家園は想像以上の敷地の広さで、順路もかなり上り下りがはげしく、一通り見て回るのに２時間ほどかかりかなり疲れました。なのでお年寄りが上り坂を前にコースを断念している姿をかなり見かけました。中に入れる家が何軒かあり家の作りを間近で見れる貴重な経験ができました。古民家をそのまま使った蕎麦屋もありましたが時間もなかったのでまたの機会にすることにしました。せっかくわざわざ来たので同じ緑地内の岡本太郎美術館（外観だけ）と先日に続き枡形山展望台にも登ってきました。この日は午前中曇っていたせいで、展望台からの眺めはあまりいいものではありませんでした。そのためほとんどの人がスカイツリーが見えない事をしきりに残念がっていました。

The Nihon Minkaen - Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum
The Nihon Minkaen in Kawasaki City has on display some fine examples of traditional Japanese architecture dating back to the 17th century. There are 25 historical buildings from all over Japan most of which are farm houses. The project of relocating these traditional buildings was undertaken in 1965. There is also a traditional water mill complete with mortars and wooden pestles and a complete Kabuki stage which was built in 1857. There is a Shintõ shrine which was built in the 1860s, and a ferry mans hut which dates from 1925. There is also a gate of a samurai residence which was built in the middle of the 19th century and a traditional raised storehouse which was built in the late 19th century and brought here from the Amami archipelago in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The buildings are all in their original state having been moved intact and rebuilt on location using the same methods in which they were originally built.
Many of the buildings are either designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, Important Cultural Properties of Kanagawa Prefecture, or Important Cultural Properties of Kawasaki City.
